In short
The 5th lord in the 10th house puts the ruler of intelligence and children in the house of work, rank and public life. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 58 is short and unusually direct: the native "will enjoy a Raj Yog", pleasures and great fame. It is a trine lord in the strongest angle, and Ch. 34 explains why that relation is prized and when it is withheld.
What the placement means
The 5th house lord rules the 5th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 10th sign, it brings the 5th house's resources - intellect, learning, sound judgement and the merit of past action - into the house of profession, authority and public reputation.
Counted from the 5th, the 10th is the 6th house. Counted from the Ascendant, the lord has moved from a trine into the 10th, which many readers treat as the most powerful of the four angles. BPHS's verse for this placement is the shortest of the Putr series and the only one that uses the words Raj Yog.
The two houses involved
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona, the house of children, intelligence and devotional practice.
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is a kendra and an upachaya: action, career, rank and standing. BPHS Ch. 34 pairs it with the 7th as the angles "specially for happiness".
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 58
Sl. 58 reads in full: "If Putr's Lord is in Karm Bhava, the native will enjoy a Raj Yog and various pleasures and be very famous." That is the whole verse - no condition, no reservation, and no mention of children, which the 5th's other verses usually address.
The verse names the result rather than describing a character, which is unusual in Ch. 24. Most verses list traits ("virtuous", "given to anger"); this one names a combination, as though the 5th lord in the 10th were itself a recognised yoga. That fits Ch. 34, where the relation of trine lords and angle lords is the basis of Parashara's whole account of royal yogas. The 5th - one of the houses "specially for wealth" - delivers its lord to the 10th, one of the houses "specially for happiness".
The reverse placement is favourable too, but in a different key. Sl. 113, Karm's lord in Putr, gives "all kinds of learning", constant delight, wealth and sons: the 10th lord brings its resources home to the 5th's concerns, where Sl. 58's 5th lord takes the 5th's resources out into public life.
The conditions Ch. 34 adds
Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 list "a Lord of a Kon is in a Kendr" among the relations that cause a yoga; Sl. 13 adds that a planet owning both a trine and an angle is "specially a Yog Karak". Sl. 15 then limits it: a lord of an angle or trine that also owns an evil house "does not cause a Raj Yog by mere relations". So Sl. 58's Raj Yog is read, by BPHS's own rules, as strongest when the 5th lord carries no dusthana and weakest - perhaps withheld - when it does. This app's Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga detector tests a narrower relation (two lords conjunct or in mutual aspect), so the placement alone does not trigger it.
Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale the result: full, half or a quarter by strength, with both lordships of a two-house planet counted. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this project's corpus have no verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table. Dignity is the engine's rule for that planet in the 10th sign with no chart supplied; the last column is the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 5th lord | 10th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sun | Capricorn | Enemy sign | none |
| Taurus | Mercury | Aquarius | Neutral | 2nd |
| Gemini | Venus | Pisces | Exalted | 12th |
| Cancer | Mars | Aries | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 10th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Taurus | Enemy sign | 8th |
| Virgo | Saturn | Gemini | Friendly sign | 6th |
| Libra | Saturn | Cancer | Enemy sign | 4th |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Leo | Friendly sign | 2nd |
| Sagittarius | Mars | Virgo | Enemy sign | 12th |
| Capricorn | Venus | Libra | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 10th |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Scorpio | Neutral | 8th |
| Pisces | Moon | Sagittarius | Neutral | none |
Two Ascendants make this placement a yogakaraka in its own house: Cancer (Mars, lord of the 5th and 10th, in Aries) and Capricorn (Venus, lord of the 5th and 10th, in Libra). There the 5th lord and the 10th lord are one planet, and it is at home. Gemini rising gives Venus exalted in Pisces, though that Venus also owns the 12th - the Sl. 15 case. Four rows are enemy signs (Aries, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius rising).
Strength changes the reading
- Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share. An enemy-sign 5th lord in the 10th still meets Sl. 58's condition, but BPHS would apply less of it.
- The second lordship: a dusthana (Gemini and Sagittarius: 12th; Leo and Aquarius: 8th; Virgo: 6th) invokes Sl. 15; an angle (Cancer, Capricorn: 10th; Libra: 4th) invokes Sl. 13.
- Association: the 10th receives the 7th aspect from the 4th, and special aspects from Mars (7th, 3rd), Jupiter (6th, 2nd) and Saturn (8th, 1st) - see drishti.
There is also the 10th lord to consider. The 5th lord can sit in the 10th while the 10th lord itself is weak or badly placed; Sl. 58 does not ask about it, but anyone reading the 10th house as a whole will. The worked example below shows exactly that situation.
Finally, the planet's nature. Ch. 34 Sl. 14 makes a pointed remark: the saying that a malefic owning an angle becomes auspicious is true "only when it simultaneously Lords over a Kon and not by merely owning a Kendr". That is precisely the situation of the yogakaraka rows here - Mars for Cancer rising and Saturn for Libra rising are natural malefics that own a trine as well as an angle, and Sl. 14 is the text's reason for treating them as auspicious. Venus for Capricorn rising is a natural benefic with the same double ownership. For the remaining Ascendants the 5th lord owns no angle; it only visits one, which is Sl. 11-12's simpler relation.
Worked example: Pisces rising, the Moon in Sagittarius
This chart came from the engine's deterministic search and can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Pisces 23.04.
- With Pisces rising, the 5th house is Cancer, ruled by the Moon, which rules no other sign. The 10th is Sagittarius.
- The Moon is in Sagittarius at 12.66 degrees, Mula pada 4, in the 10th. The engine marks it Friendly sign in this chart; by sign alone it is neutral.
- Mercury, lord of the 4th and 7th for Pisces rising, is beside it at Sagittarius 16.62.
- The 10th lord, Jupiter, is in Capricorn in the 11th at 2.09 degrees, which the engine marks Debilitated.
Ch. 34 Sl. 43-44 name Mars and the Moon as auspicious for Meen Lagn, so the planet carrying Sl. 58 is one the text favours for this rising sign, and the Moon owns no dusthana, so Sl. 15's limit does not apply. A trine lord (the Moon) and an angle lord (Mercury) are also conjunct in an angle, and the engine's yoga detector reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for the pair. The caution is on the house's own side: its ruler, Jupiter, is debilitated in the 11th. For the Moon's planet-level reading, see Moon in the 10th house.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 5th lord in the 10th house in 260, or 8.7% - moments in time, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 10th lord in the 5th (Sl. 113), is summarised above; both together form an exchange (parivartana) that Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 list first among yoga-forming relations. One house earlier, the 5th lord in the 9th (Sl. 57) gives princely rank and authorship; one house later, the 5th lord in the 11th (Sl. 59) gives learning, authorship, many children and wealth. The three placements from the 9th to the 11th form the brightest run of the Putr series.

Questions about the 5th lord in the 10th
- What does BPHS say about the 5th lord in the 10th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 58: the native "will enjoy a Raj Yog and various pleasures and be very famous". Sl. 145-148 scale this by the lord's strength.
- Is it always a Raja Yoga?
- Sl. 58 says so without conditions, but Ch. 34 Sl. 15 withholds a yoga by mere relation when the planet also owns an evil house. This app's Kendra-Kona detector requires the two lords to be conjunct or in mutual aspect, so it does not flag the placement alone.
- Which Ascendants give the cleanest version?
- Cancer and Capricorn: the 5th lord is also the 10th lord and sits in its own sign there. Libra makes Saturn a yogakaraka too, though in Cancer it is in an enemy sign.
- Does it say anything about children?
- Sl. 58 does not. The reverse, Sl. 113, mentions sons.
- How common is it?
- 260 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.7%.
