In short
The 5th lord in the 9th house joins the two trines, the houses Parashara calls specially for wealth: the ruler of intelligence and children sits in the house of fortune, dharma and the teacher. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 57 reads it as rank equal to a prince, the authorship of treatises and fame in one's line. It is among the strongest verses in the Putr series.
What the placement means
The 5th house lord is the planet ruling the 5th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 9th sign, it carries the 5th's business - intelligence, learning, children, the merit of past action - into the house of fortune, religion, the father, teachers and long journeys.
The arithmetic is neat. The 9th is the 5th counted from the 5th, so the lord stands in the 5th house from its own: a trine from a trine. Both the house it leaves and the house it enters are trines from the Ascendant, the three houses (1st, 5th, 9th) that the texts treat as the chart's seats of fortune. No other placement of the 5th lord keeps it so firmly inside that set.
The two houses involved
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is the trine of intelligence and offspring; its page covers it in full.
The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is the trine of fortune, dharma, the father and the guru. With the 5th it forms the pair BPHS Ch. 34 calls "specially for wealth". Both are trikonas; the 1st is the third.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 57
Sl. 57 reads: "If Putr's Lord is in Dharm Bhava, the native will be a prince, or equal to him, will author treatises, be famous and will shine in his race." It carries no condition and contains nothing adverse.
Three distinct goods are named. Rank ("a prince, or equal to him") is a recurring formula in Ch. 24 for the strongest placements. Authorship of treatises is specific to the 5th: of the twelve Putr verses, only this one and Sl. 59 (the 5th lord in the 11th) mention writing, so BPHS connects the 5th lord's intellect with written learning when it reaches the houses of fortune and gain. Fame "in his race" - shining within one's own line - gives the 9th house's sense of lineage and ancestry.
The reverse placement is as warm. Sl. 101, Dharm's lord in Putr, gives a person "endowed with sons and prosperity, devoted to elders, bold, charitable and learned". The two trine lords in each other's houses produce, between them, rank, learning, children, prosperity and respect for elders - which is why an exchange of these two lords is so prized.
How the engine's 5th-9th Raja Yoga relates to this
This app computes a Raja Yoga of the 5th and 9th lords after Jyotisha-Siddhanta-Sara: it fires when the two lords sit together in the same house. The 5th lord in the 9th satisfies it only if the 9th lord is also in the 9th - in its own sign - with it. The placement alone is a lord-in-house fact, not that conjunction. The Kendra-Kona rules of BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 do not apply here either, since neither house is an angle (other than the 1st, which is not involved).
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 also offers a ranking that bears on this placement. Having grouped the houses - angles, trines, the 3rd/6th/11th, the 8th and 12th - it says "in each group the significance will be in the ascending order". Within the trines, read in house order, the 9th therefore ranks above the 5th. On that reading the 5th lord in the 9th has moved from the lesser trine into the greater, which fits the rise in status Sl. 57 describes. The ordering is BPHS's; applying it to this placement is this page's reading.
Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 apply as everywhere: full, half or quarter results by strength, and both lordships of a two-house planet. The Saravali has no verse for this placement, and the Bhrigu Sutras touch it only in a commentator's note that Mars in the 9th as 5th lord for Sagittarius rising escapes a harsh Mars-in-the-9th sutra.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table. The dignity is the engine's rule for the planet in the 9th sign without a chart; the last column is its other house.
| Ascendant | 5th lord | 9th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sun | Sagittarius | Friendly sign | none |
| Taurus | Mercury | Capricorn | Neutral | 2nd |
| Gemini | Venus | Aquarius | Friendly sign | 12th |
| Cancer | Mars | Pisces | Friendly sign | 10th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Aries | Friendly sign | 8th |
| Virgo | Saturn | Taurus | Friendly sign | 6th |
| Libra | Saturn | Gemini | Friendly sign | 4th |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Cancer | Exalted | 2nd |
| Sagittarius | Mars | Leo | Friendly sign | 12th |
| Capricorn | Venus | Virgo | Debilitated | 10th |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Libra | Friendly sign | 8th |
| Pisces | Moon | Scorpio | Debilitated | none |
This is a friendly placement for most planets: eight of the twelve rows come out as friendly signs. Scorpio rising gives the strongest - Jupiter, lord of the 2nd and 5th, exalted in Cancer. Two rows are debilitated: Capricorn rising (Venus, the 5th-and-10th yogakaraka, in Virgo) and Pisces rising (the Moon in Scorpio). Taurus rising gives Mercury neutral in Capricorn.
Strength changes the reading
A favourable verse does not arrive whole regardless of the planet's condition. BPHS's own frame asks three things:
- Dignity, from the engine's dignity label: the Sl. 145-148 share. The Capricorn and Pisces rows sit at the "quarter" end.
- The second lordship: the 8th (Leo, Aquarius), 6th (Virgo) and 12th (Gemini, Sagittarius) bring a dusthana's results along, which Sl. 145-148 say can cancel the contrary ones.
- Association: the 9th receives the 7th aspect from the 3rd and special aspects from Mars (6th, 2nd), Jupiter (5th, 1st) and Saturn (7th, 12th) - see drishti.
Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10's natural classes add a further shade: Venus and Jupiter as 5th lords are benefics owning a trine, the Sun, Mars and Saturn malefics owning one. By lordship BPHS treats them all as auspicious; the difference is in how each planet is described in the 9th on its own.
Worked example: Taurus rising, Mercury in Capricorn
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart, which can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 28 January 1985, 13:51 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Taurus 20.77.
- With Taurus rising, the 5th house is Virgo and the 2nd is Gemini; Mercury rules both. The 9th is Capricorn.
- Mercury is in Capricorn at 0.16 degrees, Uttara Ashadha pada 2, in the 9th. The engine marks it Friendly sign in this chart (neutral by sign alone; the chart's temporary relationship lifts it).
- The Sun (Capricorn 14.72, ruler of the 4th) and Jupiter (Capricorn 4.22, ruler of the 8th and 11th, Debilitated and combust) share the 9th.
- Saturn, which rules both the 9th and the 10th for Taurus rising, is in Scorpio in the 7th and aspects the 9th.
Read with Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24 (Vrishabh Lagn), the picture is mixed in an instructive way. That verse names Saturn and the Sun as auspicious and says Saturn "will cause Raj Yog", while calling Mercury "somewhat inauspicious". Mercury carries Sl. 57, but the planet the text favours for this Ascendant is the 9th lord aspecting it. The engine reports a Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga for Saturn (one planet owning the 9th and 10th) and a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga that includes the Sun and Mercury, which sit together. The 5th-9th Raja Yoga does not fire, because Saturn is in the 7th, not with Mercury. For Mercury's planet-level reading, see Mercury in the 9th house.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 5th lord in the 9th house in 211, or 7%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 9th lord in the 5th (Sl. 101), is quoted above; both together would be an exchange of the two trine lords (parivartana). The 5th lord one house earlier, in the 8th (Sl. 56), is restrictive; one house later, in the 10th (Sl. 58), is the verse that names a Raj Yog outright. The other trine-to-trine case is the 5th lord in the 1st.
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
- Look up the 5th lord and check the birth chart for it in the 9th sign.
- Note whether the 9th lord is there too; if so, the engine's 5th-9th Raja Yoga applies.
Questions about the 5th lord in the 9th
- What does BPHS say about the 5th lord in the 9th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 57: the native will be a prince or equal to one, will author treatises, be famous and shine in their line. Sl. 145-148 scale it by strength.
- Is the 5th lord in the 9th a Raja Yoga?
- This app's 5th-9th Raja Yoga needs the 5th and 9th lords in the same house. The 5th lord in the 9th meets it only if the 9th lord is also there. BPHS Sl. 57 itself speaks of princely rank without naming a yoga.
- Which Ascendant gives the strongest version?
- Scorpio, where Jupiter (lord of the 2nd and 5th) is exalted in Cancer. Capricorn and Pisces rising give the lord debilitated.
- Does it mean I will write a book?
- No verse makes a promise about a person. Sl. 57 lists authorship of treatises among the results the text associates with this combination, scaled by strength.
- How common is it?
- 211 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7%.
