In short
The 9th lord in the 5th house is the ruler of fortune and dharma placed in the trine of children, intelligence and past merit. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 101 reads it as children and prosperity, devotion to elders, boldness, generosity and learning. It links the two houses BPHS calls "specially for wealth", and this app flags a Raja Yoga when the 5th lord joins it there.
What the placement means
"The 9th lord in the 5th house" is the lord of the house of fortune, father and dharma, standing in the house of children, intelligence, mantra and the merit carried from past lives. The lord carries the 9th house's matters into the 5th.
Both are trines. The 5th is also the 9th counted from the 9th, so the lord of fortune sits in the "fortune of fortune", the kind of derived house later writers call bhavat bhavam. BPHS's own reason to care is simpler: Ch. 34 names these two houses together as "specially for wealth". Houses here are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).
The two houses involved
The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is the trine of fortune, teachers and the father.
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is the trine of children, intellect, learning and devotion. Its page covers what the texts read there; this page follows the 9th lord into it.
What BPHS says about the 9th lord in the 5th
Ch. 24 Sl. 101: if the lord of Dharm is in the Putr Bhava, the native "will be endowed with sons and prosperity", devoted to elders, bold, charitable and learned. The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse mixes the 5th house's own topics (children, learning) with 9th-house ones (elders, charity), which is what one would expect when one trine's lord stands in the other.
Sl. 145-148 close the chapter with the usual qualifiers: full, half or a quarter of the result by strength, and both lordships read for a planet owning two houses.
The 5th and 9th lords together
BPHS gives this pair of houses more attention than any other. Ch. 39 Sl. 33-34 say the 9th lord is "akin to a minister" and the 5th lord more so; if the two aspect each other, are joined in any house, or stand in mutual 7th places, the native "will obtain a kingdom". Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds that the two lords, and grahas joined with them, give wealth in their Dasha periods. When the 9th lord is in the 5th, the 5th lord's own sign is occupied, so the pair are already linked; if the 5th lord is at home too, they are joined.
This app tests one version of that rule. Its Raja Yoga check, taken from Jyotisha-Siddhanta-Sara, fires when the 5th and 9th lords occupy the same house. With the 9th lord in the 5th, the yoga is flagged exactly when the 5th lord is also in the 5th, in its own sign. The Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga check does not apply here unless a Kendra lord joins them, since both lords are trine lords.
Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse for the 9th lord in the 5th.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship table, with sign-only dignity from natural relationships (a real chart can shift friendly, neutral and enemy by a step).
| Ascendant | 9th lord | 5th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Jupiter | Leo | Friendly sign | 12th |
| Taurus | Saturn | Virgo | Friendly sign | 10th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Libra | Exalted | 8th |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Scorpio | Friendly sign | 6th |
| Leo | Mars | Sagittarius | Friendly sign | 4th |
| Virgo | Venus | Capricorn | Friendly sign | 2nd |
| Libra | Mercury | Aquarius | Neutral | 12th |
| Scorpio | Moon | Pisces | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Sagittarius | Sun | Aries | Exalted | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Taurus | Friendly sign | 6th |
| Aquarius | Venus | Gemini | Friendly sign | 4th |
| Pisces | Mars | Cancer | Debilitated | 2nd |
Two Ascendants put the 9th lord exalted in the 5th: Gemini (Saturn in Libra, though Saturn also rules the 8th) and Sagittarius (the Sun in Aries). One puts it debilitated: Pisces, Mars in Cancer, where Mars also owns the 2nd. Seven rows are friendly signs and none is an enemy sign. By sign alone, then, this is one of the 9th lord's better-supported placements.
Strength changes the reading
The planet's dignity is the first scale under Sl. 145-148. The second is the 5th lord: where it is and whether it joins, aspects or opposes the 9th lord decides whether Ch. 39 Sl. 33-34 come into play. The third is the 9th lord's other house. For Gemini rising Saturn also owns the 8th, and Ch. 34 says the 8th lord's inauspiciousness is removed when it also owns a Kon, which Saturn does here. For Cancer rising Jupiter also owns the 6th; for Aries rising, the 12th.
Who the 5th lord is varies with the Ascendant just as the 9th lord does. For Aries rising the pair is the Sun (5th) and Jupiter (9th); for Leo, Jupiter (5th) and Mars (9th); for Sagittarius, Mars (5th) and the Sun (9th). In those three fire-sign Ascendants the two trine lords are natural friends, and the 9th lord in the 5th is a guest in a friend's sign. For Capricorn rising the pair is Venus and Mercury, also mutual friends. For Libra rising (Saturn and Mercury) the table shows the difference: Mercury is only neutral in Saturn's Aquarius. The dignity column already carries this, because the sign of the 5th is the 5th lord's own sign.
Timing is the other dimension. Ch. 41 Sl. 16 says the 9th and 5th lords give wealth "during their Dasha periods". The Vimshottari Dasha calculator lists when each planet's period runs, which is the only sense in which this app connects a placement to time.
From the 5th, every graha aspects the 11th, the house of gains. A Mars 9th lord adds the 8th and 12th, a Jupiter the 9th and 1st (so a Jupiter 9th lord in the 5th looks back at its own house), and a Saturn the 7th and 2nd.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 5th lord in the 9th (Sl. 57), is one of the chapter's strongest verses: a prince or his equal, an author of treatises, famous. Both at once is a parivartana between the two trines. The 9th lord in the 4th (Sl. 100) speaks of houses and conveyances, and the 9th lord in the 6th (Sl. 102) of meagre prosperity and enemies; Sl. 101 sits between a favourable and an unfavourable neighbour.
Worked example: Aquarius rising, Venus in Gemini
The engine's deterministic search found this chart: 7 August 1985, 20:48 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Aquarius 26.1. It reproduces in the birth chart calculator.
- With Aquarius rising the 9th house is Libra and the 9th lord is Venus, which also rules Taurus, the 4th (the Aquarius yogakaraka).
- The 5th house is Gemini. Venus is there at 12.38 degrees, Ardra pada 2, not retrograde, not combust, "Friendly sign".
- The 5th lord, Mercury, is in Cancer in the 6th, retrograde and combust, "Neutral".
- The Lagna lord Saturn is in Libra in the 9th, "Exalted".
Raja Yoga in the engine's sense does not form: Venus and Mercury are in different houses. Ch. 39 Sl. 33-34's other links do not hold either, since Mercury in the 6th is neither 7th from Venus in the 5th nor aspecting it. What the chart has instead is a friendly-sign yogakaraka in a trine, aspecting the 11th, and an exalted Lagna lord sitting in the 9th house itself. On Sl. 145-148's scale Venus is a middle-to-strong case for Sl. 101.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 9th lord in the 5th house in 239, or 8.0%. These are moments, not people.
