In short

The 9th lord in the 6th house is the ruler of fortune and dharma placed in the house of enemies, disease, debt and service, one of the three dusthanas. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 102 reads it as meagre prosperity, little happiness from maternal relatives and trouble from enemies. The text scales that by strength, and for four Ascendants the 9th lord is exalted or in its own sign here.

What the placement means

"The 9th lord in the 6th house" is the house lord of fortune, the father and dharma standing in the house of enemies, illness, debt, litigation and service. The lord brings the 9th house's affairs there.

The 6th is a dusthana (with the 8th and 12th), and also an upachaya, a house where matters are expected to grow with effort. Counted from the 9th it is the 10th, an angle from the lord's own house. Houses are whole-sign here (whole-sign houses), so a birth time is needed to know whether the placement holds.

The two houses involved

The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is the trine of fortune, the father and religious merit.

The 6th house (Ari Bhava) covers enemies, disease, debts, maternal relatives and service. Its page sets out the classical readings.

What BPHS says about the 9th lord in the 6th

Ch. 24 Sl. 102 is one of the more restrained unfavourable verses in the chapter. If the lord of Dharm is in the Ari Bhava, it says, the native "will enjoy meagre prosperity", will lack happiness from maternal relatives and will be troubled by enemies. The bphs-alt translation has the same words. Each clause is a 6th-house topic seen through a weakened 9th: some prosperity rather than none, and the house's usual themes of enemies and the mother's side of the family.

This is the text's claim about a configuration, not a forecast for a person, and BPHS itself qualifies it immediately. Sl. 145-148 say the result is full, half or a quarter according to the planet's strength, and that a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, with contrary results cancelling. A strong 9th lord in the 6th gives the verse in full, which here means the modest version; the same rule also means its second lordship can offset it.

Lordship rules that bear on it

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 is about owning houses, not occupying them: the owner of the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects, and the predominant lordship stalls the lesser. That matters for the Ascendants where the 9th lord also rules the 6th (Cancer and Capricorn rising): the planet is then in its own sign, and the 9th lordship, as the more significant, is the one the text says prevails. Ch. 34 Sl. 15 adds that a Kendra or Kon lord that also owns an evil house does not form a Raj Yoga by mere association.

Ch. 42 Sl. 7 lists a penury combination involving the 9th lord: the 5th lord in the 6th and the 9th lord in the 12th, aspected by marakas. It concerns the 9th lord in the 12th, not in the 6th. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse here.

The table is unusually split. Four rows give a strong 9th lord: Taurus (Saturn exalted in Libra, and Saturn also owns the 10th), Leo (Mars exalted in Capricorn, also owning the 4th), Cancer (Jupiter in its own Sagittarius, which is the 6th sign) and Capricorn (Mercury in its own Gemini, likewise the 6th sign). Libra rising puts Mercury debilitated in Pisces. Four rows are enemy signs: Jupiter in Virgo (Aries), Saturn in Scorpio (Gemini), the Sun in Taurus (Sagittarius) and Venus in Cancer (Aquarius). Read with Sl. 145-148, the same verse spans its full and its quarter strength across the table.

Strength changes the reading

After dignity, company is the next test. Benefics joining the 9th lord in the 6th, or aspecting it, are what BPHS elsewhere treats as relief; malefics add to the house's difficulty. Combustion weakens the lord further.

The 6th is also an upachaya, and that is worth setting beside Sl. 102. The idea of houses of growth is that matters there improve with time and effort. BPHS does not apply it to Sl. 102, and this page does not stretch it to cover what the verse says about prosperity. It does explain why readers meet a softer "struggle, then gain" description of this placement in later writing: that comes from the upachaya idea, not from the Ch. 24 verse.

The 6th counted from the 9th is the 10th, an angle from the lord's own house. BPHS draws no reading from that in Ch. 24 and this page does not invent one; it is mentioned only because derived-house arguments are common and should be kept apart from the verse.

From the 6th, every graha aspects the 12th. A Mars 9th lord also aspects the 9th (its 4th aspect from the 6th) and the 1st; a Jupiter the 10th and the 2nd; a Saturn the 8th and the 3rd. So for Leo rising, an exalted Mars in Capricorn watches both its own 9th house and the Lagna, a detail the verse does not mention but the aspect rules supply.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 6th lord in the 9th (Sl. 69), reads as trade in wood and stones with fluctuating professional fortunes; together the two are a parivartana between a dusthana and a trine, which the engine flags as an exchange. The 9th lord in the 5th (Sl. 101) is entirely favourable and the 9th lord in the 7th (Sl. 103) speaks of happiness after marriage. The 6th is the first house in the 9th lord's sequence where the verse turns modest.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, the Moon in Aries

This is the very first moment of the engine's deterministic search: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 28.81. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Scorpio rising the 9th house is Cancer, so the 9th lord is the Moon, which rules no other sign.
  • The 6th house is Aries. The Moon is there at 6.3 degrees, Ashwini pada 2, "Friendly sign" (neutral to Mars by nature, lifted by the chart's temporary relation).
  • No other planet is in the 6th. The Moon's 7th aspect falls on the 12th, Libra, which is empty.
  • The Lagna lord Mars is in Aquarius in the 4th, "Friendly sign"; Saturn and Ketu are in the 1st with Mercury.

With a single lordship there is nothing to offset or cancel: Sl. 102 applies as it stands, scaled by a friendly-sign, unafflicted Moon to a middle strength.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 9th lord in the 6th house in 233, or 7.8%. That is a property of the sampled moments, not of people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 9th lord from the table.
  2. See whether it is in the sixth sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its dignity and its other lordship; for Cancer and Capricorn rising it is in its own sign.
  4. Note which planets join or aspect it.

Questions about the 9th lord in the 6th

What does BPHS say about the 9th lord in the 6th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 102: meagre prosperity, little happiness from maternal relatives, and trouble from enemies. Sl. 145-148 scale this by the planet's strength.
Is the 9th lord in the 6th bad luck?
BPHS reads it as modest prosperity rather than none, and scales even that by strength. This app reports the verse as the text's claim and does not turn it into a forecast.
Is it a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
No. Vipareeta Raja Yoga in this app (Harsha Yoga for the 6th lord) needs the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th in one of those houses. The 9th lord qualifies only for Cancer and Capricorn rising, where it also owns the 6th and so is a 6th lord in its own 6th.
Which Ascendants put a strong 9th lord in the 6th?
By sign: Taurus (Saturn exalted), Leo (Mars exalted), Cancer and Capricorn (own sign). Libra rising puts Mercury debilitated in Pisces.
Does the reverse placement read better?
The 6th lord in the 9th (Sl. 69) reads as trade in wood and stones with fluctuating professional fortunes. It is a different verse about a different lord, not a softer version of this one; if both occur the two lords have exchanged signs.
How common is it?
It occurred in 233 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.8%.
