In short
The 9th lord in the 7th house is the ruler of fortune and dharma placed in the angle of marriage and partnership. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 103 reads it briefly: happiness after marriage, virtue and fame. As a trine lord in a Kendra it also meets the placement condition of BPHS's yoga rules, and for two Ascendants the 9th lord is exalted there.
What the placement means
"The 9th lord in the 7th house" is the lord of the house of fortune, father and dharma standing in the house of the spouse, partners and dealings with others. The lord takes the 9th house's fortune into the 7th.
The 7th is a Kendra, so this is again a trine lord in an angle. Counted from the 9th, the 7th is the 11th, the house of gains: the lord of fortune sits in the place of gain from its own house. Houses are whole-sign from the rising sign (whole-sign houses).
The two houses involved
The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is the trine of fortune and merit.
The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is the angle of marriage, partnership and travel. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 call the 7th and 10th "specially for happiness" among the Kendras.
What BPHS says about the 9th lord in the 7th
Ch. 24 Sl. 103 is one of the shortest verses in the 9th lord's set, and it opens with an address to the listener: "O Brahmin, if Dharm's Lord is in Yuvati Bhava, the native beget happiness after marriage", and will be virtuous and famous. The bphs-alt wording is the same. The translation's grammar is loose, but the content is clear: the 7th house's topic, marriage, delivered as happiness, plus two general qualities.
The closing verses of the chapter, Sl. 145-148, scale it: a strong 9th lord gives the full result, a middling one half, a weak one a quarter, and a planet ruling two houses gives both lordships' results. The phrase "after marriage" is the verse's own; it is not a timing rule in the Dasha sense, and this app does not treat it as one.
A trine lord in an angle, again
Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 count a Kon lord in a Kendra among the links that cause a yoga. This app's Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga test is narrower: a Kendra lord and a Kona lord joined in one house or in mutual aspect. A 9th lord in the 7th always aspects the Lagna (its 7th aspect), and the Lagna lord is a Kendra lord, so the engine flags the yoga here whenever the Lagna lord sits in the 7th with it, or sits in the 1st and so aspects it back.
Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28 set out Lakshmi Yoga: the 9th lord in a Kendra in its own, moolatrikona or exaltation sign while the Lagna lord is strong. The 7th is a Kendra, so the sign condition is met for the two Ascendants below where the 9th lord is exalted in the 7th. The engine does not test Lakshmi Yoga. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship table, with sign-only dignity from natural relationships (a real chart can shift the tier by one).
| Ascendant | 9th lord | 7th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Jupiter | Libra | Enemy sign | 12th |
| Taurus | Saturn | Scorpio | Enemy sign | 10th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Sagittarius | Neutral | 8th |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Capricorn | Debilitated | 6th |
| Leo | Mars | Aquarius | Neutral | 4th |
| Virgo | Venus | Pisces | Exalted | 2nd |
| Libra | Mercury | Aries | Neutral | 12th |
| Scorpio | Moon | Taurus | Exalted | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Sagittarius | Sun | Gemini | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Cancer | Enemy sign | 6th |
| Aquarius | Venus | Leo | Enemy sign | 4th |
| Pisces | Mars | Virgo | Enemy sign | 2nd |
Two Ascendants put the 9th lord exalted in the 7th: Virgo (Venus in Pisces; Venus also owns the 2nd) and Scorpio (the Moon in Taurus, a luminary with no other house). Both meet Lakshmi Yoga's sign condition. Cancer rising puts Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn. Five rows are enemy signs: Jupiter in Libra (Aries), Saturn in Scorpio (Taurus), Mercury in Cancer (Capricorn), Venus in Leo (Aquarius) and Mars in Virgo (Pisces). With Cancer's debilitation that makes six weak rows out of twelve, as many as for the 9th lord in the 3rd.
Strength changes the reading
Sl. 145-148 make dignity the first scale. Company and aspect come next; a 9th lord in the 7th looks straight at the Lagna, so its condition and the Lagna's are tied. The second lordship counts as well: Saturn for Taurus rising owns the 9th and 10th, a yogakaraka by Ch. 34 Sl. 13, while Jupiter for Aries rising owns the 12th as well and Mercury for Libra rising also owns the 12th.
The 7th is the house the texts check from a second chart. BPHS Ch. 7 assigns the spouse to the Navamsa, so the 9th lord's sign in the Navamsa (D9) is the natural cross-check for any reading of Sl. 103 that touches marriage. The Navamsa calculator computes it from the same birth data.
One more distinction belongs here. The 7th lord in the 9th and the 9th lord in the 7th are often run together in later writing as "fortune through the spouse". BPHS keeps them apart: Sl. 103 says happiness after marriage, virtue and fame; Sl. 81, the reverse, speaks of many undertakings and of the native's relations with women. Neither verse says the spouse brings wealth; that phrase belongs to other verses of the chapter, such as the 7th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 74).
For Gemini rising the 9th lord Saturn also owns the 8th. Ch. 34 says an 8th lord that also owns a Kon gives auspicious effects, so Saturn's two roles there are not read as simply contrary.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 7th lord in the 9th (Sl. 81), reads as union with many women, good disposition toward the spouse, and many undertakings. Both together are a parivartana between a Kendra and a Kon. The 9th lord in the 6th (Sl. 102) is modest and the 9th lord in the 8th (Sl. 104) is plainly unfavourable, so the 7th is the favourable placement between two difficult ones.
Worked example: Taurus rising, Saturn in Scorpio
The engine's deterministic search returned: 28 January 1985, 13:51 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Taurus 20.77. The positions reproduce in the birth chart calculator.
- With Taurus rising the 9th house is Capricorn and the 9th lord is Saturn, which also rules Aquarius, the 10th: the Taurus yogakaraka.
- The 7th house is Scorpio. Saturn is there at 3.26 degrees, Vishakha pada 4, not retrograde, not combust, "Enemy sign".
- Ketu is in the 7th with it, at Scorpio 0.06; Rahu is opposite in the 1st.
- The Lagna lord Venus is in Pisces in the 11th, "Exalted".
Saturn's aspects from the 7th fall on the 1st (its 7th), the 9th (its 3rd) and the 4th (its 10th): the 9th lord watches its own house and the Lagna. On Sl. 145-148's scale an enemy-sign Saturn is a weaker case, though it is a yogakaraka. Lakshmi Yoga does not form, since Scorpio is not Saturn's own or exaltation sign, even though the Lagna lord is exalted. For the engine's Kendra-Kona test, Saturn finds no partner: the Lagna lord Venus is in the 11th, neither joined with it nor in mutual aspect. The test does fire elsewhere in this chart, for the Sun (lord of the 4th) and Mercury (lord of the 5th), which sit together in Capricorn, the 9th house itself. The engine also reports Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga here, because one planet, Saturn, is both the 9th and the 10th lord, and its house, the 7th, is a Kendra.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 9th lord in the 7th house in 302, or 10.1%, higher than one in twelve. That is a property of the sampled moments, not of people.
Checking it in your own chart

Questions about the 9th lord in the 7th
- What does BPHS say about the 9th lord in the 7th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 103: happiness after marriage, virtue and fame. Sl. 145-148 scale it by strength.
- Does this placement mean marriage brings luck?
- The verse ties happiness to marriage as a classical reading. This app does not forecast a marriage or a spouse from a placement.
- Can it form Lakshmi Yoga?
- Yes, in principle: the 7th is a Kendra. By sign the 9th lord is exalted there for Virgo and Scorpio rising; the Lagna lord must also be strong (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28). The engine does not test this yoga.
- Which planet is my 9th lord?
- The ruler of the ninth sign from your Ascendant. See the table, or find your rising sign with the Lagna calculator.
- Does the 9th lord in the 7th aspect the Ascendant?
- Yes. Every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, and the 1st is the 7th from the 7th. A Saturn 9th lord here also aspects the 9th and 4th, a Mars the 10th and 2nd, a Jupiter the 11th and 3rd.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 302 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 10.1%.
