House lords

The lord of the 9th house placed in the 8th: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 104, why Ch. 34 treats the 8th as the 12th from the 9th, the planet for all 12 Ascendants and an engine-computed Leo chart.

In short

The 9th lord in the 8th house is the ruler of fortune and dharma placed in the house of longevity, obstacles and the hidden, which is also the 12th house counted from the 9th. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 104 reads it as lack of prosperity and little happiness from an elder brother. The text scales that by strength; for Gemini rising the 9th lord is in its own sign there.

What the placement means

"The 9th lord in the 8th house" is the lord of the house of fortune, father and dharma standing in the house the texts read for longevity, sudden events, inheritance and what is hidden.

The 8th is a dusthana. More specifically for this page, it is the 12th house counted from the 9th: the house of loss for the house of fortune. BPHS uses exactly that counting in Ch. 34, where it explains why the 8th lord is not auspicious. Houses are counted whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is the trine of fortune, the father and religious merit.

The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is the house of longevity, obstacles and unearned or hidden matters. Its page covers those readings.

What BPHS says about the 9th lord in the 8th

Ch. 24 Sl. 104 is brief: if the lord of Dharm is in the Randhr Bhava, the native "will not be prosperous" and will not enjoy happiness from his elder brother. The bphs-alt text matches. Of the 9th lord's twelve verses it is the plainest negative, and both clauses can be traced: prosperity is the 9th house's own promise, now in the 12th from itself; the elder sibling belongs to the 11th, and the 8th is the 10th from the 11th, though the verse does not explain its reasoning.

That is the text's claim about a configuration. BPHS qualifies it in Sl. 145-148: results come in full, half or a quarter according to strength, and a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, contrary ones cancelling. On those terms a weak 9th lord in the 8th gives a quarter of an unfavourable verse, and a strong one with a good second lordship may cancel part of it.

The 12th from the 9th

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 is the passage that makes this placement intelligible. It says "Randhr's Lord is not auspicious, as he owns the 12th from Dharm Bhava", and that an 8th lord which also owns a Kon gives auspicious effects. The same counting, applied to occupation rather than ownership, is the natural reading of Sl. 104: the 9th lord is placed in the house that is loss to its own. Ch. 42 Sl. 13 adds a warning about association: a graha linked to the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th, without the aspect of a Kon lord, may harm finances in its Dasha. Here the 9th lord is itself a Kon lord in the 8th, so its own aspects and company decide how far that applies.

Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse on the 9th lord in the 8th.

Gemini rising is the special row: the 9th lord Saturn also owns the 8th, so it stands in its own Capricorn, an 8th lord at home that also owns a Kon, the very case Ch. 34 calls auspicious. Aquarius rising puts Venus debilitated in Virgo, and Venus there is also the Aquarius yogakaraka (4th and 9th), so the strongest lordship in the chart is in its weakest sign in a dusthana. Six rows are friendly signs, and no row is exalted or an enemy sign. By sign alone the 8th is, oddly, a fairly comfortable house for the 9th lord; the difficulty in Sl. 104 comes from the house, not the sign.

Strength changes the reading

After dignity, look at the 9th lord's second house. For Leo and Aquarius rising it also owns the 4th, a Kendra; for Cancer rising it owns the 6th (Jupiter), and for Aries and Libra rising, the 12th. A Jupiter or Mercury that owns the 9th and 12th and sits in the 8th has two lordships tied to loss in a house of loss; one that owns the 9th and 4th has a Kendra to offset it.

For Gemini rising the case is different in kind. Saturn there owns the 8th and the 9th, sits in its own 8th, and Ch. 34 says an 8th lord that also owns a Kon is auspicious. Sl. 104 and Ch. 34 then point in different directions, which is exactly the situation Sl. 145-148 describe: contrary results from two lordships tend to cancel, while results of varied nature both come to pass.

From the 8th, every graha aspects the 2nd, the house of wealth. A Mars 9th lord also aspects the 11th and the 3rd; a Jupiter the 12th and the 4th; a Saturn the 10th and the 5th. Benefics joining the lord, or aspecting it, are the support BPHS repeatedly mentions in the neighbouring 8th-lord verses (Sl. 94-95).

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 8th lord in the 9th (Sl. 93), is one of the chapter's harshest verses, about betraying religion and taking others' wealth; this app reports it only as the text's claim. Together the two placements are a parivartana between a dusthana and a trine. On either side, the 9th lord in the 7th (Sl. 103) gives happiness after marriage and the 9th lord in the 9th (Sl. 105) abundant fortune, so Sl. 104 is the low point between two high ones.

Worked example: Leo rising, Mars in Pisces

The engine's deterministic search found: 15 February 1985, 19:05 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 15.68. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Leo rising the 9th house is Aries, so the 9th lord is Mars, which also rules Scorpio, the 4th: the Leo yogakaraka.
  • The 8th house is Pisces. Mars is there at 15.99 degrees, Uttara Bhadrapada pada 4, not retrograde, not combust, "Friendly sign".
  • Venus is in the 8th with it, at Pisces 17.46, "Exalted"; for Leo rising Venus owns the 3rd and the 10th.
  • The Lagna lord, the Sun, is in Aquarius in the 7th, "Neutral".

Mars here aspects the 2nd (its 7th), the 11th (its 4th) and the 3rd (its 8th). It is joined by an exalted Venus, a natural benefic, and Venus owns the 10th, a Kendra, so the engine's Kendra-Kona test finds a 10th lord and a 9th lord in one house. The yoga calculator lists that link even though the house is the 8th: the engine's rule does not exclude dusthanas, while Ch. 34 Sl. 15 says Kendra or Kon lords that also own an evil house do not form a Raj Yoga by mere relation. Venus also owns the 3rd, an evil house in Ch. 34's list, so a reader following BPHS would discount that link.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 9th lord in the 8th house in 239, or 8.0%. That counts moments of the sky, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 9th lord in the table.
  2. Check whether it is in the eighth sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its dignity and second lordship (own sign for Gemini rising, debilitated for Aquarius).
  4. Note benefic company or aspects, which the neighbouring verses treat as relief.

Questions about the 9th lord in the 8th

What does BPHS say about the 9th lord in the 8th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 104: the native will not be prosperous and will not enjoy happiness from an elder brother. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength and by the planet's other lordship.
Is this placement bad luck?
It is the 9th lord's least favourable verse in BPHS, and the text frames it as a tendency scaled by strength. This app reports the verse and does not predict misfortune.
Is it Sarala Yoga?
No. Sarala Yoga in this app is the 8th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th. For Gemini rising, though, Saturn is both 8th and 9th lord, so a Saturn in its own 8th there also satisfies Sarala Yoga.
Why does Ch. 34 matter here?
It explains that the 8th is the 12th from the 9th, which is why the 8th lord is not auspicious, and that an 8th lord also owning a Kon is auspicious. Both points apply directly to the 9th lord in the 8th.
How common is it?
It occurred in 239 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.0%.
