In short

The 9th lord in the 9th house is the ruler of fortune and dharma sitting in its own house. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 105 reads it as abundant fortune, virtue and beauty, with much happiness from siblings. Because the 9th sign is always the lord's own, the planet is never weak by sign here; strength turns instead on combustion, company and its second house.

What the placement means

"The 9th lord in the 9th house" means the planet that rules the house of fortune, the father, teachers and dharma is sitting in that house itself. A house lord in its own house is the simplest case in Ch. 24: the house's affairs stay at home with their owner.

Because each house is one whole sign in this app (whole-sign houses), a lord in its own house is always in its own sign (swakshetra), and for some planets also in moolatrikona or exaltation by degree. The 9th is a trikona, so this is a trine lord in its own trine.

The house involved

Only one house is involved here: the 9th house (Dharma Bhava), read for fortune, the father, the guru, long journeys and religious merit. Its page covers those significations and its karaka. Since the lord does not leave, the reading is about the house being strongly held rather than about any second house it visits. The 1st house, from which it is counted, is covered on the 1st house (Tanu Bhava) page.

What BPHS says about the 9th lord in the 9th

Ch. 24 Sl. 105 reads: if the lord of Dharm is in the Dharm Bhava, the native "will be endowed with abundant fortunes, virtues and beauty" and will enjoy much happiness from co-born. The bphs-alt text is the same. Three of the four items are the 9th house's own promise in its fullest form; the fourth, siblings, is the 3rd house's topic. The 3rd is the 7th from the 9th, so a 9th lord at home looks straight at it with its 7th aspect, a link the verse does not explain but the aspect rule supplies.

One textual detail: the corpus translation introduces the 9th lord's verses as running "up to Sloka 103", but they continue to Sl. 108, as do the other lords' sets of twelve. The verse numbers on this page follow the slokas as printed, not the header.

Sl. 145-148 still apply. A planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, contrary ones cancelling, and the result is full, half or a quarter by strength. Own sign is a good dignity, but it is not the only measure of strength the chapter has in mind.

Further passages on the 9th lord

Ch. 41 Sl. 16 says the 9th lord bestows wealth during its Dasha. Ch. 41 Sl. 23-27 go further for this lord alone, reading its divisional dignities: in Parijatamsa the native visits holy places, in Gopuramsa performs sacrificial rites, in Simhasanamsa is mighty and truthful, and so on. Those dignity counts depend on varga schemes this app does not compute; the engine's own comment on the Ch. 41 yogas says the divisional refinements are not implemented. The 9th lord's sign in the Navamsa is the varga the app does compute.

Lakshmi Yoga (Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28) does not apply, because it asks for the 9th lord in a Kendra and the 9th is a Kon. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse on this lordship.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's table. Because the 9th sign is the lord's own sign, the dignity column never falls below own sign; where moolatrikona or exaltation also applies to that sign, the engine decides by degree.

The 9th lord and the 9th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Capricorn rising is the one row where exaltation is possible: Mercury in Virgo is exalted in the early degrees, then moolatrikona, then own sign, all by degree. Six rows can be moolatrikona by degree (Jupiter in Sagittarius, Saturn in Aquarius, Mars in Aries, the Sun in Leo, Venus in Libra, and Mercury in Virgo). The second-lordship column is where the rows differ most: Jupiter for Aries rising and Mercury for Libra rising also own the 12th; Jupiter for Cancer and Mercury for Capricorn the 6th; Saturn for Gemini the 8th; Saturn for Taurus the 10th, and Mars for Leo and Venus for Aquarius the 4th.

Strength changes the reading

With dignity settled by sign, the other measures decide. Combustion is the most visible: the engine marks a planet combust inside the Sun's orb whatever its sign, as it does for the exalted 9th lord in the worked example below. Planets joining the lord in the 9th add their own lordships to the house.

The second lordship is the other measure. Ch. 34 Sl. 7 says the predominant lordship stalls the lesser, so for a 9th-and-12th or 9th-and-6th lord the trine is expected to prevail, but Sl. 145-148 ask for both to be read. Ch. 34 also says an 8th lord that owns a Kon gives auspicious results, which covers Saturn for Gemini rising. For Taurus, Leo and Aquarius rising the 9th lord owns a Kendra too, the yogakaraka case of Ch. 34 Sl. 13, and in its own 9th it is as well placed as BPHS describes.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

There is no reverse placement: the 9th lord in the 9th is its own mirror. Its neighbours are the 9th lord in the 8th (Sl. 104), the least favourable verse of the set, and the 9th lord in the 10th (Sl. 106), the most exalted in status. The 9th lord in the 9th is the middle term: fortune kept at home, not converted into rank. The other lords in their own houses, such as the 10th lord in the 10th (Sl. 118), read as skill and truthfulness, each in its own house's terms.

Worked example: Capricorn rising, exalted Mercury in Virgo

The engine's deterministic search returned: 12 September 1986, 15:56 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Capricorn 7.57. It can be entered in the birth chart calculator to see the same chart.

  • With Capricorn rising the 9th house is Virgo, so the 9th lord is Mercury, which also rules Gemini, the 6th.
  • Mercury is in Virgo at 1.63 degrees, Uttara Phalguni pada 2, in the 9th. The engine marks it "Exalted".
  • Mercury is combust; the Sun is in Leo at 25.7 degrees in the 8th, in its own sign. Ketu is also in Virgo, at 28.68.
  • The Lagna lord Saturn is in Scorpio in the 11th, "Neutral"; Venus is in its moolatrikona Libra in the 10th.

The chart shows the two measures pulling apart. By sign this is the best case the table allows, an exalted 9th lord in its own house; by the engine's combustion flag the same planet is weakened by the Sun's nearness. Mercury's second house is the 6th, a dusthana, which Ch. 34 Sl. 7 expects the trine to outweigh. From the 9th, Mercury's 7th aspect falls on the 3rd, Pisces, where Rahu sits at 28.68, so the house of the siblings clause in Sl. 105 is itself occupied by a node.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 9th lord in the 9th house in 246, or 8.2%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 9th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether that planet is in the ninth sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note whether it is combust or retrograde, and what else is in the 9th.
  4. Note the second house it rules, and check its Navamsa sign.

Questions about the 9th lord in the 9th

What does BPHS say about the 9th lord in its own house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 105: abundant fortune, virtue and beauty, and much happiness from siblings, scaled by strength under Sl. 145-148.
Is the 9th lord always strong in the 9th?
By sign, yes: it is always in its own sign, and sometimes moolatrikona or exalted by degree. But BPHS strength also depends on combustion, company and the planet's other lordship, as the worked example shows.
Does it form Lakshmi Yoga?
No. Lakshmi Yoga in BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28 needs the 9th lord in a Kendra; the 9th is a trine.
Why does the verse mention siblings?
Sl. 105 does not give its reasoning. The 3rd house of siblings is the 7th from the 9th, so a 9th lord at home aspects it directly; that is the aspect rule, not a statement in the verse.
How common is it?
It occurred in 246 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.2%.
