In short
The 9th lord in the 10th house is the ruler of fortune and dharma placed in the angle of work, rank and public life. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 106 gives it the chapter's highest status reading: a king or his equal, a minister or an army chief, virtuous and dear to all. It is also the start of the Dharma-Karmadhipati link, which this app flags when the 10th lord joins it.
What the placement means
"The 9th lord in the 10th house" is the lord of fortune, the father and dharma standing in the house of action, profession, authority and reputation. The house of merit carries its affairs into the house of deeds.
The 10th is a Kendra and the 9th is a trikona, so this is the trine lord in an angle again, now in the angle tied to rank. Counted from the 9th, the 10th is the 2nd: the next sign along, the wealth house of the house of fortune. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).
The two houses involved
The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is the trine of fortune, teachers and the father.
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is the house of work, status, authority and deeds in the world. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 call the 7th and 10th "specially for happiness" among the Kendras.
What BPHS says about the 9th lord in the 10th
Ch. 24 Sl. 106: if the lord of Dharm is in the Karm Bhava, the native "will be a king, or equal to him, or be a minister, or an Army chief", virtuous and dear to all. The bphs-alt text reads the same. It is the strongest status language in the 9th lord's set, and it is entirely in 10th-house terms: rank, office and command, delivered with the 9th lord's virtue.
In a modern reading, the verse describes standing and responsibility in whatever field a person works in; BPHS's kings and ministers are the social ranks of its own time. It is not a forecast of an office. Sl. 145-148 make that explicit by scaling every Ch. 24 result: full, half or a quarter by strength, with both lordships read for a planet that owns two houses.
The 9th and 10th lords together
The 9th and 10th lords are the pair later tradition names Dharma-Karmadhipati. This app's Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga fires when the two lords occupy the same house and that house is a Kendra or a Kona. With the 9th lord in the 10th, the yoga forms exactly when the 10th lord is also in the 10th, in its own sign. The broader Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga test also accepts the 9th lord in mutual aspect with any Kendra lord; from the 10th, the 9th lord's 7th aspect falls on the 4th, so a 4th lord in the 4th completes it.
Two more named rules start here. Ch. 36 Sl. 18 defines Shrinath Yoga: the 7th lord in the 10th, while the 10th lord is exalted and joined with the 9th lord. If the 9th lord is in the 10th with an exalted 10th lord, two of its three conditions are met. The 10th lord can be exalted in its own 10th only when Mercury rules the 10th and stands in Virgo, which happens for Sagittarius rising; there Mercury also rules the 7th, so all three conditions can meet in Virgo with the Sun. Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28's Lakshmi Yoga also applies, since the 10th is a Kendra. The engine tests neither yoga.
The Bhrigu Sutras have no sutra on this lordship, but the editor's commentary in this corpus edition calls two cases powerful Rajayogas: Mars in Taurus for Leo rising, "in the 10th as lord of the 9th", and Saturn in Aquarius for Taurus rising, lord of both the 9th and 10th in the 10th. Saravali is silent.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship table, with sign-only dignity from natural relationships (a real chart can shift friendly, neutral and enemy one step).
| Ascendant | 9th lord | 10th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Jupiter | Capricorn | Debilitated | 12th |
| Taurus | Saturn | Aquarius | Moolatrikona or own sign by degree | 10th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Pisces | Neutral | 8th |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Aries | Friendly sign | 6th |
| Leo | Mars | Taurus | Neutral | 4th |
| Virgo | Venus | Gemini | Friendly sign | 2nd |
| Libra | Mercury | Cancer | Enemy sign | 12th |
| Scorpio | Moon | Leo | Friendly sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Sagittarius | Sun | Virgo | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Libra | Friendly sign | 6th |
| Aquarius | Venus | Scorpio | Neutral | 4th |
| Pisces | Mars | Sagittarius | Friendly sign | 2nd |
Taurus rising is the standout: Saturn owns both the 9th and the 10th and stands in its own Aquarius, moolatrikona by degree. That one planet satisfies Lakshmi Yoga's sign condition and is, in effect, a Dharma-Karmadhipati link inside a single graha. Aries rising is the opposite: Jupiter, the 9th lord, is debilitated in Capricorn. Libra rising puts Mercury in an enemy sign (Cancer). Five rows are friendly signs. The Bhrigu commentary's Leo case, Mars in Taurus, shows as "Neutral" in the table: the commentary's point is lordship, not dignity.
Strength changes the reading
Under Sl. 145-148 the 9th lord's dignity scales Sl. 106. The 10th lord's condition matters as much here as anywhere: Ch. 39 Sl. 21 says a 10th lord in its own or exaltation sign aspecting the Lagna gives a Raj Yoga of its own, and the Dharma-Karmadhipati and Shrinath rules both depend on where the 10th lord is.
The second lordship also changes the picture. For Aries rising the debilitated Jupiter also owns the 12th; for Libra rising Mercury owns the 12th; for Cancer and Capricorn rising the 9th lord owns the 6th. For Leo and Aquarius rising it owns the 4th, and a 4th-and-9th lord in the 10th is a yogakaraka in the strongest angle.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 10th lord in the 9th (Sl. 117), is almost as emphatic: one of royal birth becomes a king, an ordinary person becomes equal to one, with wealth and children. Both together are a parivartana between the 9th and 10th lords. The 9th lord in the 9th (Sl. 105) keeps fortune at home and the 9th lord in the 11th (Sl. 107) turns it into daily gains; Sl. 106 is the one that turns it into rank.
Worked example: Scorpio rising, the Moon in Leo
The engine's deterministic search found: 6 March 1985, 00:19 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 9.38. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- With Scorpio rising the 9th house is Cancer, so the 9th lord is the Moon, which rules no other sign.
- The 10th house is Leo. The Moon is there at 3.35 degrees, Magha pada 2, "Neutral".
- The 10th lord, the Sun, is in Aquarius in the 4th, "Neutral": exactly opposite the Moon.
- The Lagna lord Mars is in Pisces in the 5th, with an exalted Venus and a debilitated, combust Mercury.
Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga does not form, because the Moon and the Sun are in different houses. The Kendra-Kona test does: the Moon in the 10th and the Sun in the 4th aspect each other across the axis, a mutual aspect between a Kona lord and a Kendra lord. Shrinath Yoga is out of reach (the Sun is not exalted, and the 7th lord Venus is in the 5th). On Sl. 145-148's scale a neutral Moon early in Leo is a middle case for Sl. 106, with a single lordship and nothing to offset.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 9th lord in the 10th house in 247, or 8.2%. Moments of the sky, not people.

Questions about the 9th lord in the 10th
- What does BPHS say about the 9th lord in the 10th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 106: a king or his equal, a minister or an army chief, virtuous and dear to all, scaled by strength under Sl. 145-148.
- Is this Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga?
- Not by itself. The engine flags it when the 9th and 10th lords are in the same Kendra or Kona house, so here it needs the 10th lord in the 10th as well. See what a yoga in your chart means.
- Does it mean a high position at work?
- The verse speaks of rank in the terms of its time. This app reports it as the text's reading and does not forecast a job or title.
- Which Ascendant gives the strongest version?
- By sign, Taurus rising: Saturn owns the 9th and 10th and stands in its own Aquarius. Aries rising puts Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn.
- Can the 9th lord in the 10th be part of Shrinath Yoga?
- Yes. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 18 needs the 7th lord in the 10th and the 10th lord exalted and joined with the 9th lord. With the 9th lord already in the 10th, an exalted 10th lord beside it meets two conditions; for Sagittarius rising, Mercury rules both the 7th and 10th and is exalted in Virgo, so all three can meet with the Sun there.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 247 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.2%.
