In short

The 9th lord in the 11th house is the ruler of fortune and dharma placed in the house of gains, income and elder siblings. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 107 reads it as financial gain day by day, devotion to elders, virtue and meritorious acts. The 11th is also the 3rd from the 9th, and by sign the lord ranges from exalted (Pisces rising) to debilitated (Gemini and Sagittarius rising).

What the placement means

"The 9th lord in the 11th house" is the lord of fortune, the father and dharma standing in the house of gains, income, fulfilled wishes and elder siblings. The lord takes the 9th house's fortune into the 11th.

The 11th is an upachaya, a house of growth. Counted from the 9th it is the 3rd, the house of effort and courage relative to fortune. It is also the 7th from the 5th, so a 9th lord here looks across at the other trine. Houses are whole-sign from the rising sign (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is the trine of fortune, teachers and merit.

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, friends and elder siblings. Its page covers what the texts read there.

What BPHS says about the 9th lord in the 11th

Ch. 24 Sl. 107: if the lord of Dharm is in the Labh Bhava, the native "will enjoy financial gains day by day", be devoted to elders, virtuous and meritorious in acts. The bphs-alt text agrees. "Day by day" is the distinctive phrase: the verse describes gain that accumulates, which fits the 11th's character as a house of growth.

Read with the chapter's closing verses, Sl. 145-148, the effect is full, half or a quarter according to the planet's strength, and a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results. The verse is wholly favourable, so here strength decides how much good the text expects, not whether any harm offsets it.

Placement in the 11th versus ownership of the 11th

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 lists the owners of the 3rd, 6th and 11th among the lords that give evil effects, the 11th lord most of all in the ascending order the verse gives. That is a rule about the planet that owns the 11th. The 9th lord placed in the 11th is a different matter: it is a trine lord visiting the house of gains, and Sl. 107 reads it favourably. The two rules meet only for Aries rising, where the 11th lord Saturn also owns the 10th, and for Pisces rising, where it owns the 12th; neither of those Saturns is the 9th lord.

Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds that the 9th lord gives wealth in its Dasha, and the 11th is where Ch. 41's earlier "great affluence" combinations place several of their planets; the engine tests those exact combinations as Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence), which depend on specific planets in the 5th and 11th, not on the 9th lord. The Bhrigu Sutras speak of the 11th lord only inside the Moon-in-the-11th sutras, and Saravali has no verse here.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The 9th lord and the 11th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

The table runs the full range. Pisces rising puts Mars exalted in Capricorn, and Mars also owns the 2nd, so both wealth houses' lordships stand in the house of gains. Two rows are debilitated: Saturn in Aries for Gemini rising and the Sun in Libra for Sagittarius rising. Three are enemy signs: Jupiter in Taurus (Cancer), Mars in Gemini (Leo) and Venus in Cancer (Virgo). Libra and Scorpio rising give friendly signs (Mercury in Leo, the Moon in Virgo).

Strength changes the reading

The planet's dignity is the first scale; combustion and company the second. Because the 11th is an upachaya, a 9th lord there is in a house the texts expect to improve with time, but that is a general idea about the house, and Sl. 107 is already phrased as growth.

The derived counting adds a second angle. The 11th is the 3rd from the 9th, the house of effort and initiative; read from the 9th, the lord of fortune has moved into its own house of effort. BPHS does not build Sl. 107 on that argument and this page does not lean on it, but it is consistent with the verse's stress on "meritorious acts" and on gains that come "day by day" rather than at once.

Pisces rising deserves a closer look because it is the one exalted row. Mars there owns the 2nd (Aries) and the 9th (Scorpio), so an exalted Mars in Capricorn, the 11th, puts the lords of the house of wealth and the house of fortune in the house of gains. By the scale of Sl. 145-148 it is the case in which BPHS would expect Sl. 107 most fully, though the reading still depends on combustion, company and aspects.

From the 11th, every graha aspects the 5th, the other trine, so a 9th lord here always watches the house of children and intelligence. A Mars 9th lord also aspects the 2nd and the 6th; a Jupiter the 3rd and the 7th; a Saturn the 1st and the 8th. The second lordship completes the picture: Jupiter for Aries rising and Mercury for Libra rising also own the 12th, the house of loss, which Sl. 145-148 ask to be weighed against the 9th lordship's gains.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 11th lord in the 9th (Sl. 129), reads as fortunate, skilful, truthful, honoured by the king and affluent. Both together are a parivartana between the house of gains and the house of fortune. The 9th lord in the 10th (Sl. 106) gives rank, and the 9th lord in the 12th (Sl. 108) loss of fortune and spending on good acts; Sl. 107 is the gain that sits between them.

Worked example: Leo rising, Mars and the Sun in Gemini

The engine's deterministic search returned: 2 July 1985, 10:20 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 18.67. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Leo rising the 9th house is Aries, so the 9th lord is Mars, which also rules Scorpio, the 4th: the Leo yogakaraka.
  • The 11th house is Gemini. Mars is there at 21.41 degrees, Punarvasu pada 1, "Neutral", and combust.
  • The Sun, the Lagna lord, is in Gemini too, at 16.61, "Friendly sign".
  • Venus, lord of the 10th, is in its own Taurus in the 10th; Saturn is exalted in Libra in the 3rd, retrograde.

The chart illustrates two of the strength measures at once. The 9th lord is a yogakaraka, but it is combust, and Gemini is an enemy sign for Mars by nature, shown here as "Neutral" after the chart's temporary relation. The Lagna lord sits with it, a Kendra-and-Kona lord joined with the 4th-and-9th lord, which the engine's Kendra-Kona test finds as a conjunction. Mars's aspects from the 11th fall on the 5th, the 2nd and the 6th. On Sl. 145-148's scale this is a middle case for Sl. 107.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 9th lord in the 11th house in 294, or 9.8%. That is a count of sampled moments, not people.

Questions about the 9th lord in the 11th

What does BPHS say about the 9th lord in the 11th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 107: financial gains day by day, devotion to elders, virtue and meritorious acts, scaled by strength under Sl. 145-148.
Is the 11th lord's "evil" lordship relevant?
Not directly. BPHS Ch. 34 says the owner of the 11th gives evil effects; the 9th lord placed in the 11th is a trine lord visiting it, and Ch. 24 reads that favourably.
Will this placement make money?
BPHS names gains as a classical tendency, scaled by strength. This app does not forecast income from a placement.
Which Ascendants give the strongest and weakest versions?
By sign: Pisces rising (Mars exalted in Capricorn) is strongest; Gemini (Saturn in Aries) and Sagittarius (the Sun in Libra) put the 9th lord debilitated.
Does the 9th lord in the 11th aspect the 5th house?
Yes. The 5th is the 7th house from the 11th, and every graha aspects the 7th from itself. So a 9th lord here always watches the other trine, the house of children and intelligence.
How common is it?
It occurred in 294 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.8%.
