In short
Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence) is a set of seven rules from BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 2-8: a planet occupying its own sign as the 5th house while specific other planets occupy the 11th - for example Venus in its own sign in the 5th with Mars in the 11th. This app tests the seven exactly as listed, and they fired in only 4 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.
Most Dhana Yogas in popular use are loose ideas - "the 2nd and 11th lords connected", "benefics in the 11th". BPHS Ch. 41 is different. It gives a short, closed list of exact configurations, and the first seven are grouped under the heading "Yogas for Great Affluence". This app tests those seven as written. Each one ties the 5th house to the 11th: a planet in its own sign as the 5th, and particular planets in the 11th. This page gives the full table, how the engine tests it, why the combinations are so rare, and a chart. For what any yoga is worth in general, see what a yoga in your chart means.
The rule: seven conditions from BPHS Ch. 41
Each row below is one sloka. The engine reports Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence) when any row is met in full. "Own sign as the 5th" means the sign on the 5th house - counted as whole signs from the ascendant - is one of that planet's own signs (swakshetra), and the planet is in it.
| BPHS Ch. 41 | In the 5th, in its own sign | In the 11th (all required) | Ascendants that allow it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sl. 2 | Venus (Taurus or Libra) | Mars | Capricorn, Gemini |
| Sl. 3 | Mercury (Gemini or Virgo) | Moon, Mars, Jupiter | Aquarius, Taurus |
| Sl. 4 | Sun (Leo) | Saturn, Moon, Jupiter | Aries |
| Sl. 5 | Saturn (Capricorn or Aquarius) | Sun and Moon | Virgo, Libra |
| Sl. 6 | Jupiter (Sagittarius or Pisces) | Mercury | Leo, Scorpio |
| Sl. 7 | Mars (Aries or Scorpio) | Venus | Sagittarius, Cancer |
| Sl. 8 | Moon (Cancer) | Saturn | Pisces |
The engine applies nothing beyond this. It does not test the dignity of the planets in the 11th, aspects, combustion or retrogression, and it does not apply the divisional refinements that follow in the same chapter. When a row is met, it names the planets and shows a sentence such as "Venus occupies its own sign in your 5th house, while Mars sits in your 11th."
Readings the engine had to settle
- Sl. 5 is shaped differently from the rest - two planets in the 11th and Saturn in the 5th - so the code checks it separately. The result is the same yoga name.
- Sl. 4 names Leo as the 5th, so the ascendant must be Aries; Sl. 8 names Cancer, so it must be Pisces. The other rows allow either of the planet's two signs.
- The 11th-house planets must all be present. In Sl. 3 and Sl. 4, three planets have to share the 11th; the engine requires every one of them, as the sloka lists them with "and".
What the classical texts say
BPHS Ch. 41 opens with an unusually confident line: one born to these yogas "will surely become wealthy". Sl. 2 reads that the native "will obtain great riches"; Sl. 3-8 say "very affluent". Then the chapter qualifies itself. Sl. 16 adds that the lords of the 9th and 5th, and planets joined with them, give wealth during their dasha periods. Sl. 17 says all these yogas "should be delineated after knowing favourable, or unfavourable dispositions of the participant Grahas and their strength and weakness". The confident opening, in other words, is followed by an instruction to weigh strength before saying anything.
The engine's line keeps the reading and adds the rarity: "Classically one of the strongest wealth combinations - a rare, exact alignment read as bringing substantial, lasting affluence." The engine comment explains why this chapter was implemented when BPHS's general Raj Yoga chapter was not: Ch. 41's wealth rules are enumerable - one exact rule per planet - rather than an open-ended list. It also records what was left out: Sl. 18-34 grade lords by divisional dignities (Parijatamsa, Uttamamsa and so on), a sub-system this app does not build.
Not the only "Dhana Yoga" in the library
Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 32 and BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 6 give a quite different Dhana Yoga: benefics in the upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11) counted from the Moon. This app does not compute that one. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga chapter (pp. 145-154, read from page images) does not reproduce the Ch. 41 table. If another tool shows a "Dhana Yoga" for your chart, check which rule it uses.
How rare it is
The seven rules together fired in 4 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 - about one moment in 750. Only three of the seven slokas appeared at all:
| Moment (IST, New Delhi) | Sloka met | Planets |
|---|---|---|
| 2005-10-01 23:04 | Sl. 2 | Venus in the 5th, Mars in the 11th |
| 2022-10-14 10:15 | Sl. 6 | Jupiter in the 5th, Mercury in the 11th |
| 2034-09-15 13:01 | Sl. 6 | Jupiter in the 5th, Mercury in the 11th |
| 2048-05-25 09:34 | Sl. 7 | Mars in the 5th, Venus in the 11th |
The rarity follows from stacking exact conditions. The ascendant must be one of at most two signs; one named planet must be in that particular sign; and one to three other named planets must be in another particular sign, six signs away from the 5th. The three-planet rows (Sl. 3 and 4) did not appear in the sample, and nor did Sl. 5 and Sl. 8. Sl. 5 is especially constrained: the Sun and the Moon together in the 11th means a birth near new Moon, in a narrow window of ascendants. These are, as the engine says, exact alignments rather than tendencies.
The geometry: every row is an opposition
There is a pattern in the table that BPHS does not spell out but the arithmetic does. The 11th house is the 7th sign from the 5th, so in every row the planet in the 5th and the planets in the 11th stand in opposite signs. Every planet in this engine aspects the 7th sign from itself, so in every row the 5th-house planet and the 11th-house planets also aspect each other - the yoga is, in effect, a planet in its own sign in a full mutual drishti with named partners across the chart. Read that way, each row describes a recognisable sky:
- Sl. 4 (Sun in Leo, Moon with Saturn and Jupiter opposite) and Sl. 3 (Mercury in the 5th, the Moon opposite it) both put the Moon roughly opposite the Sun - a birth near full Moon, since Mercury is never far from the Sun.
- Sl. 5 (Saturn in the 5th, the Sun and Moon together opposite it) is the reverse: the Sun and Moon in one sign means a birth near new Moon, with Saturn opposite the Sun.
- Sl. 6 (Jupiter in the 5th, Mercury opposite) puts Jupiter roughly opposite the Sun as well, for the same reason - Mercury stays close to the Sun.
- Sl. 2 and Sl. 7 are the Venus-Mars pair seen from either side: Venus in its own sign opposite Mars, or Mars in its own sign opposite Venus. Since Venus also stays near the Sun, both put Mars roughly opposite the Sun.
- Sl. 8 (the Moon in Cancer, Saturn in Capricorn) is the Moon opposite Saturn, in the two signs each of them rules.
None of this is a separate rule, and the engine does not use it; it is simply the physical arrangement the slokas describe. It explains why the rows are so rare - each one needs a specific opposition, in specific signs, at a specific ascendant - and why the ones built around a full or new Moon depend on the phase as well as the positions.
Worked example: a 2005 New Delhi chart
The engine's search found this chart first: 1 October 2005 at 23:04 IST in New Delhi. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Gemini at 10.55 degrees, so Libra is the 5th house and Aries the 11th.
| Graha | Sign and degree | House | Dignity (engine) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venus | Libra 29.01 | 5 | Own sign |
| Jupiter | Libra 0.84 | 5 | Enemy sign |
| Mars | Aries 29.46 | 11 | Own sign |
| Sun | Virgo 14.7 | 4 | Enemy sign |
| Mercury | Virgo 25.01 | 4 | Own sign, combust |
| Moon | Leo 25.48 | 3 | Friendly sign |
| Saturn | Cancer 14.9 | 2 | Neutral |
| Rahu / Ketu | Pisces 19.9 / Virgo 19.9 | 10 / 4 |
- The 5th house is Libra, one of Venus's own signs, and Venus is in it. The first half of Sl. 2 holds.
- The 11th house is Aries, and Mars is in it. The second half holds.
- No other row applies: Jupiter is in the 5th too, but Libra is not Jupiter's sign, and Mercury is not in the 11th.
The engine reports Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence) with Venus and Mars and the sentence "Venus occupies its own sign in your 5th house, while Mars sits in your 11th." Two things the rule does not ask about are worth noticing. Mars in Aries is also in its own sign, which Sl. 17's "strength and weakness" would count in the yoga's favour; and Venus at 29.01 degrees is at the very end of Libra, so a birth a few hours later could move it into the next sign and the yoga would vanish - a reminder that exact rules are sensitive to exact positions. The same chart also returns Bhadra Yoga (Mercury in its own sign Virgo, in the 4th, a kendra), Durudhura, Vesi, Pasa and the Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga.
Great Affluence beside its neighbouring yogas
Its sibling in the same chapter is Dhan Yoga (Wealth), BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 9-15: a planet in its own sign as the ascendant, joined or aspected by named planets. That family fired more often in the sample but is built the same way. The Raja Yoga of the 5th and 9th lords links the 5th to the 9th rather than the 11th, and BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 16 names those same two lords as wealth-givers in their dashas. The Panchamahapurusha yogas also reward a planet in its own sign, but only in a kendra; the 5th is not a kendra, so the planet in the 5th here can never form one of them.
What the rule does and does not establish
Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence) establishes that one of seven exact 5th-and-11th configurations is present. BPHS reads it as wealth, ties the timing to the 5th and 9th lords' periods, and in the next breath asks for the planets' strength to be weighed. The engine tests the configuration only. A yoga is a named rule about positions, not a promise of money; this one is rare enough that its absence from a chart is the ordinary case and means nothing in itself.

Questions about Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence)
- What is Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence)?
- Any of seven configurations in BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 2-8: a planet in its own sign as the 5th house, with specific other planets in the 11th. The full table is above.
- Which ascendants can have it?
- Every ascendant allows exactly one of the seven rows, as the last column of the table shows: Aries (Sl. 4), Taurus and Aquarius (Sl. 3), Gemini and Capricorn (Sl. 2), Cancer and Sagittarius (Sl. 7), Leo and Scorpio (Sl. 6), Virgo and Libra (Sl. 5), Pisces (Sl. 8).
- How rare is it?
- It fired in 4 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 in this engine. Only Sl. 2, 6 and 7 appeared in the sample.
- Is it the same as "2nd and 11th lords together"?
- No. That is a popular rule this app does not compute. This yoga is BPHS Ch. 41's exact list, built on the 5th and 11th houses.
- Does the strength of the planets matter?
- BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 17 says it does. The engine tests only the positions and own-sign condition.
- When does BPHS say the wealth comes?
- Ch. 41 Sl. 16 says the lords of the 9th and 5th houses, and planets joined with them, give wealth during their dasha periods. That is the text's claim; the engine reports the yoga's presence, not a dated result.
- Does it promise wealth?
- No. BPHS states a result; this app reports a named rule about positions. It does not predict income and prescribes no remedies.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
