In short

The 11th lord in the 9th house is the ruler of gains placed in the trine of fortune, dharma and the father. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 129 reads it as fortunate, skilful, truthful, honoured by the king and affluent. Counted from the 11th, the 9th is the 11th again, the gain of gains; by sign, though, five Ascendants put the 11th lord in an enemy sign there.

What the placement means

"The 11th lord in the 9th house" is the lord of gains, income, friends and elder siblings standing in the house of fortune, the father, teachers and religious merit. The house of returns carries its affairs into the strongest trine.

The 9th is a trikona. Counted from the 11th, the 9th is the 11th: the gains house of the gains house. Counted from the Ascendant it is fortune. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, friends and elder siblings.

The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) governs fortune, the father, the guru and religious merit.

What BPHS says about the 11th lord in the 9th

Ch. 24 Sl. 129: if the lord of Labh is in the Dharm Bhava, the native "will be fortunate, skilful, truthful, honoured by the king and be affluent". The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse reads like a summary of the 9th house's promise (fortune, truth, royal favour) with the 11th lord's gains added as affluence. It is almost the mirror of Sl. 107, the 9th lord in the 11th, which gives gains "day by day" and devotion to elders: the two lords of fortune and gain read similarly whichever way round they sit.

Sl. 145-148 scale it: full, half or a quarter by strength, with both lordships read for a planet owning two houses, contrary results cancelling.

An "evil" lordship in the best trine

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 class the 11th lord as the most marked of the evil lordships and the Kon houses as auspicious. The 11th lord in the 9th therefore puts a lordship the text classes as difficult into the house it treats as the most fortunate, and Ch. 24 reads the outcome favourably. Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds that grahas joined with the 9th lord give wealth in their Dasha periods, which matters when the 9th lord is at home in the 9th beside the 11th lord. Ch. 34 Sl. 15 notes that a Kendra or Kon lord also owning an evil house does not cause a Raj Yoga by mere relation; for the Ascendants where the 11th lord also owns the 4th (Cancer, Capricorn) or the 10th (Aries), that limits how far a link with the 9th lord counts.

Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 11th lord in the 9th.

Two rows are exalted: Cancer rising (Venus in Pisces; Venus owns the 4th and 11th) and Virgo rising (the Moon in Taurus). Taurus rising puts Jupiter, owner of the 8th and 11th, debilitated in Capricorn. Five rows are enemy signs: Mercury in Cancer (Scorpio rising), Venus in Leo (Sagittarius), Mars in Virgo (Capricorn), Jupiter in Libra (Aquarius) and Saturn in Scorpio (Pisces). The rest are neutral. The verse is among the most favourable in the set; the table is among the less supportive.

Row by row

The two exalted rows differ in kind. For Cancer rising, Venus owns the 4th, an angle, as well as the 11th, so an exalted Venus in the 9th is an angle lord in a trine, the placement form of the yoga link in Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12, qualified by Sl. 15 because Venus also owns the 11th. For Virgo rising the Moon owns only the 11th, so its exaltation in Taurus scales Sl. 129 with nothing else attached. The debilitated row, Taurus rising, puts Jupiter, owner of the 8th and 11th, at its weakest in the house of fortune, so the verse would come through at a quarter.

Among the enemy-sign rows, two put a dusthana lordship into the 9th as well: Mercury for Scorpio rising owns the 8th, Venus for Sagittarius rising the 6th. For Pisces rising Saturn owns the 11th and 12th, so the lords of gain and of loss sit together in the house of fortune, in an enemy sign.

Two rows bring an angle into the 9th along with the 11th. For Cancer rising Venus owns the 4th; exalted in Pisces, it is the table's strongest row. For Capricorn rising Mars owns the 4th; in Virgo it is in an enemy sign. For Aries rising Saturn owns the 10th as well as the 11th and stands in Sagittarius, neutral. In those three rows the 11th lord is also a Kendra lord sitting in a Kon, the placement form of the yoga-causing link of Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12, which Sl. 15 qualifies because the same planet owns the 11th. For Leo and Aquarius rising the second house is the 2nd, so both wealth lordships sit in the house of fortune: Mercury in Aries (neutral) and Jupiter in Libra (enemy).

Strength changes the reading

Sl. 145-148 put dignity first; combustion and company follow. The 9th lord's own position matters too: if it is in the 11th at the same time, the two lords have exchanged signs.

From the 9th, every graha aspects the 3rd. A Mars 11th lord also aspects the 12th and the 4th; a Jupiter the 1st and the 5th; a Saturn the 11th and the 6th, so a Saturn 11th lord in the 9th looks back at its own house, as in the worked example.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 9th lord in the 11th (Sl. 107), gives financial gains day by day, devotion to elders and meritorious acts. Both together are a parivartana between the house of fortune and the house of gains. The 11th lord in the 8th (Sl. 128) speaks of reversals and the 11th lord in the 10th (Sl. 130) of royal honour and self-mastery.

Worked example: Pisces rising, Saturn in Scorpio

The engine's deterministic search found: 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Pisces 23.04. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Pisces rising the 11th house is Capricorn, so the 11th lord is Saturn, which also owns Aquarius, the 12th.
  • The 9th house is Scorpio. Saturn is there at 2.64 degrees, Vishakha pada 4, "Neutral" in this chart; Ketu shares Scorpio at 0.54.
  • The 9th lord, Mars, is in Aquarius, the 12th. Saturn and Mars have exchanged signs, and the engine reports a Parivarthana Yoga.
  • The Lagna lord Jupiter is debilitated and combust in Capricorn, the 11th.

The exchange here is not the 9th-11th parivartana of the neighbouring section: Mars, the 9th lord, sits in Saturn's other sign, Aquarius, the 12th. So the 11th-and-12th lord is in the 9th and the 2nd-and-9th lord is in the 12th. Saturn's aspects from the 9th fall on the 3rd (its 7th), the 11th (its 3rd) and the 6th (its 10th): it watches its own house of gains. By sign Saturn is the table's enemy-sign row for Pisces; the chart's temporary relationship moves it to neutral, a middle case under Sl. 145-148.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 11th lord in the 9th house in 285, or 9.5%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 11th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the ninth sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its dignity in your chart and its second lordship.
  4. Find the 9th lord; if it is in the 11th, the yoga calculator will report the exchange.

Questions about the 11th lord in the 9th

What does BPHS say about the 11th lord in the 9th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 129: fortunate, skilful, truthful, honoured by the king and affluent, scaled by strength under Sl. 145-148.
Is the 9th the "11th from the 11th"?
Yes. Counting from the 11th, the 9th is the 11th house again. BPHS does not build Sl. 129 on that derived count, but the verse is consistent with it.
Does it mean gains through the father or teachers?
The verse names fortune and royal honour, not a source of gains. This app does not forecast income from a placement.
Which Ascendants give the strongest version?
By sign: Cancer (Venus exalted in Pisces) and Virgo (the Moon exalted in Taurus). Taurus rising puts Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn.
What does the reverse placement say?
The 9th lord in the 11th (Sl. 107): financial gains day by day, devotion to elders, virtue and meritorious acts.
How common is it?
It occurred in 285 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.5%.
