In short

The 11th lord in the 10th house is the ruler of gains placed in the angle of work, rank and public action. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 130 reads it as honoured by the king, virtuous, attached to religion, intelligent, truthful and master of the senses. By sign it is one of the 11th lord's best tables, and for Aries rising the 11th lord also owns the 10th and forms Sasa Yoga there.

What the placement means

"The 11th lord in the 10th house" is the lord of gains, income, friends and elder siblings standing in the house of work, authority and public deeds. The house of returns carries its affairs into the angle of action.

The 10th is a Kendra and an upachaya; the 11th is an upachaya. Counted from the 11th, the 10th is the 12th, the sign just behind it. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, friends and elder siblings.

The 10th house (Karma Bhava) governs work, status and deeds; Ch. 34 calls the 7th and 10th "specially for happiness".

What BPHS says about the 11th lord in the 10th

Ch. 24 Sl. 130: if the lord of Labh is in the Karm Bhava, the native "will be honoured by the king", virtuous, attached to his religion, intelligent, truthful, and "will subdue his senses". The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse puts the 10th house's public honour first and then lists inward qualities: religion, truthfulness, self-command. Gains are not named as such; the 11th lord's contribution is the royal favour, a gain in standing.

Sl. 145-148 scale it: full, half or a quarter by strength, both lordships read for a planet owning two houses.

Ownership, placement and the court rule

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 class the 11th lord as the most marked of the evil lordships. For Aries rising Saturn owns both the 10th and the 11th, so the 11th lord in the 10th is a 10th lord at home, and Ch. 34 Sl. 7, on the predominant lordship stalling the lesser, lets the angle lead. For the other Ascendants the planet is a visitor in the 10th, and Sl. 130 reads the visit favourably.

Ch. 40 Sl. 2 says that if the 10th and 11th are free of malefic occupation and aspect, and the 11th is aspected by its own lord, the native "will be a chief in the king's court". From the 10th, the 11th lord's 7th aspect falls on the 4th, not the 11th, so the 11th lord in the 10th does not by itself supply that condition; and if the 11th lord is a malefic, it occupies the 10th, which the rule asks to be free of malefics. The engine does not test Ch. 40 Sl. 2. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse here.

The 11th lord and the 10th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Aries rising is the own-sign row: Saturn in Capricorn. Sagittarius rising puts Venus, owner of the 6th and 11th, debilitated in Virgo. No row is an enemy sign. Six are friendly signs, Gemini (Mars in Pisces), Leo (Mercury in Taurus), Virgo (the Moon in Gemini), Libra (the Sun in Cancer), Scorpio (Mercury in Leo) and Aquarius (Jupiter in Scorpio), and Aries is in its own sign. By sign this is one of the 11th lord's best placements.

Sasa Yoga and the other rows

For Aries rising, Saturn in its own Capricorn in the 10th is a Kendra placement in own sign, so the engine reports Sasa Yoga, one of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas, whenever this placement occurs for that Ascendant. No other row forms one, because no other 11th lord is in its own or exaltation sign in the 10th.

The second-lordship column shows what else comes into the 10th. For Cancer and Capricorn rising it is the 4th, so both angles' affairs meet in the 10th with the 11th; for Leo and Aquarius rising, the 2nd, a wealth house; for Taurus and Scorpio rising, the 8th; for Gemini and Sagittarius, the 6th; for Pisces, the 12th. The friendly signs in the table often carry a dusthana lordship with them, which is the "varied results" case of Sl. 145-148.

The derived count is short to state. Counted from the 11th, the 10th is the 12th: the house of expenditure relative to gains. Some later readings use that to argue that gains are spent on career or status. Sl. 130 does not say so; it names honour, religion and self-mastery, and this page reports only that. The weak row, Sagittarius rising, is the clearest test of the scale in Sl. 145-148: Venus there owns the 6th and the 11th and is debilitated in Virgo, so the verse would come through at about a quarter, with a dusthana lordship alongside it.

Strength changes the reading

After dignity, combustion and company matter, and in the 10th the company includes the 10th lord if it is at home. Ch. 34's rule on Kendra lordship (benefics owning angles do not give benefic effects, malefics do not stay malefic) applies to the 11th lord here only when it also owns an angle.

From the 10th, every graha aspects the 4th. A Mars 11th lord also aspects the 1st and the 5th; a Jupiter the 2nd and the 6th; a Saturn the 12th and the 7th.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 10th lord in the 11th (Sl. 119), gives wealth, happiness and children with virtue and truthfulness. Both together are a parivartana between two upachayas, one of them an angle. The 11th lord in the 9th (Sl. 129) gives fortune and affluence and the 11th lord in the 11th (Sl. 131) gains in every undertaking.

Worked example: Cancer rising, Venus in Aries

The engine's deterministic search found: 23 June 1985, 07:43 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Cancer 7.22. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Cancer rising the 11th house is Taurus, so the 11th lord is Venus, which also owns Libra, the 4th.
  • The 10th house is Aries. Venus is there at 22.52 degrees, Bharani pada 3, "Friendly sign"; Rahu shares Aries at 22.34.
  • The 10th lord Mars is in Gemini, the 12th, combust, with the Sun and an own-sign Mercury; the engine reports Vimala Yoga through Mercury, the 12th lord.
  • Saturn is exalted in Libra, the 4th, retrograde; the engine reports Sasa Yoga for it.

Here a 4th-and-11th lord sits in the 10th, so two Kendras' affairs (the 4th by lordship, the 10th by placement) meet in one planet, along with the house of gains. Venus's 7th aspect falls on the 4th, its own other house, where an exalted Saturn sits. On Sl. 145-148's scale a friendly-sign, uncombust Venus is a good case for Sl. 130. Rahu beside it is a node; Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give results by their association with house lords, so Rahu in this chart takes colour from Venus.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 11th lord in the 10th house in 244, or 8.1%. That is a count of moments, not people.
