House lords

The lord of the 11th house placed in the 11th: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 131 on gains in every undertaking, why an "evil" lordship reads well at home, the planet for all 12 Ascendants and an engine-computed Gemini chart.

In short

The 11th lord in the 11th house is the ruler of gains sitting in its own house. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 131 reads it as gaining in all undertakings, with learning and happiness increasing day by day. The planet is always in its own sign there, and the Bhrigu Sutras' only remark on the 11th lord, that a strong one brings gains, fits this case most directly.

What the placement means

"The 11th lord in the 11th house" is the planet that rules the house of gains, income, friends and elder siblings, sitting in that house itself. A house lord at home keeps its house's affairs with it.

In whole-sign houses (whole-sign houses) a lord in its own house is always in its own sign (swakshetra), and sometimes moolatrikona or exalted by degree. The 11th is an upachaya, a house of growth, so this is an own-sign planet in a house the texts expect to improve with time.

The house involved

Only one house is involved: the 11th house (Labha Bhava), read for gains, income, fulfilled aims, friends and elder siblings. Its page covers those significations. The Ascendant from which it is counted has its own page, the 1st house (Tanu Bhava).

What BPHS says about the 11th lord in the 11th

Ch. 24 Sl. 131: if the lord of Labh is in the Labh Bhava, the native "will gain in all his undertakings", while his learning and happiness "will be on the increase day by day". The bphs-alt text agrees. The phrase "day by day" appears here as in the 9th lord's verse for the 11th (Sl. 107) and the 10th lord's for the 1st (Sl. 109); in each case BPHS describes growth over time, which is what an upachaya is.

Sl. 145-148 still apply. Own sign is good dignity, but combustion, company and the planet's second lordship all count, and a planet owning two houses gives both results.

An "evil" lordship at home

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 list the 11th lord as the most marked of the lordships that give evil effects. Ch. 24 Sl. 131 is, by contrast, wholly favourable. The two are about different things: Ch. 34 classifies the planet by what it owns, for the chart as a whole; Ch. 24 reads what happens when that planet sits in its own house. A reader following BPHS keeps both, treating the planet as a functional malefic elsewhere in the chart while reading its own house as strongly held.

The Bhrigu Sutras speak of the 11th lord once, in the Moon-in-the-11th sutras: if the lord of the 11th is weak the native will be put to much expenditure; if strong, there will be gains of wealth. It is said of a different configuration, but an own-sign 11th lord is the clearest case of a "strong" one. Saravali gives no verse on the lordship.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's table. Because the 11th sign is the lord's own sign, the dignity column never falls below own sign; moolatrikona or exaltation is decided by degree.

The 11th lord and the 11th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Scorpio rising is the only row where exaltation is possible: Mercury in Virgo is exalted in the early degrees. Six rows can be moolatrikona by degree: Aries (Saturn in Aquarius), Gemini (Mars in Aries), Libra (the Sun in Leo), Scorpio (Mercury in Virgo), Sagittarius (Venus in Libra) and Aquarius (Jupiter in Sagittarius). The rest are own sign only.

What travels with the 11th lord

The second-lordship column is the part of the table that varies. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 11th lord also owns the 8th; for Gemini and Sagittarius rising, the 6th; for Pisces rising, the 12th. In those five rows a dusthana lordship sits at home in the 11th with the gains lordship, and Sl. 145-148's "both lordships" rule brings that house's results too. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the second house is the 4th, an angle; for Leo and Aquarius rising, the 2nd, the other wealth house; for Aries rising, the 10th. For Virgo and Libra rising the 11th lord is a luminary with no second house, so Sl. 131 applies on its own.

Because the 11th lord at home is always in its own sign, the table's rows differ mainly by which planet it is. Saturn (Aries and Pisces rising) and Mars (Gemini and Capricorn) are natural malefics; Jupiter (Taurus and Aquarius), Venus (Cancer and Sagittarius) and Mercury (Leo and Scorpio) natural benefics; the Moon (Virgo) and the Sun (Libra) the luminaries. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 grade natural benefics and malefics but does not tie those grades to Sl. 131, so the verse applies in the same words to all of them; only the strength measures of Sl. 145-148 separate them.

Strength changes the reading

With dignity settled, combustion and company decide. From the 11th, every graha aspects the 5th. A Mars 11th lord also aspects the 2nd and the 6th; a Jupiter the 3rd and the 7th; a Saturn the 1st and the 8th, so for Aries and Pisces rising a Saturn 11th lord at home looks at the Lagna.

Ch. 34 Sl. 7 says the planet owning the more significant house stalls the effects of the less significant one. For Aries rising the 10th, an angle, outranks the 11th; for Cancer and Capricorn rising, the 4th does. In those rows the planet's angle lordship leads, and its own-sign placement in the 11th adds Sl. 131.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

There is no reverse placement. The 11th lord in the 10th (Sl. 130) gives royal honour and the 11th lord in the 12th (Sl. 132) good deeds and foreign company. The comparable own-house verses are the 9th lord in the 9th (Sl. 105) and the 10th lord in the 10th (Sl. 118).

Worked example: Gemini rising, Mars in Aries

The engine's deterministic search found: 11 April 1985, 10:47 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Gemini 14.92. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Gemini rising the 11th house is Aries and the 11th lord is Mars, which also owns Scorpio, the 6th.
  • Mars is in Aries at 25.73 degrees, Bharani pada 4, in the 11th, "Own sign" (past the moolatrikona degrees); not retrograde, not combust.
  • Rahu shares Aries at 26.2. Saturn, the 8th and 9th lord, is in Scorpio, the 6th, retrograde.
  • The engine reports Sarala Yoga (Saturn, the 8th lord, in the 6th), Malavya Yoga (Venus exalted in the 10th) and a Kendra-Kona link for Mercury and Venus.

Mars here is the own-sign case Sl. 131 describes, at full strength on Sl. 145-148's scale, with its second lordship, the 6th, a dusthana, travelling alongside. From the 11th it aspects the 5th (its 7th), the 2nd (its 4th) and the 6th (its 8th): it looks at its own other house, where Saturn sits. Rahu beside it takes its results from the association, as BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says of the nodes.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 11th lord in the 11th house in 240, or 8.0%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

Questions about the 11th lord in the 11th

What does BPHS say about the 11th lord in its own house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 131: gains in all undertakings, with learning and happiness increasing day by day, scaled by strength under Sl. 145-148.
If the 11th lord is a functional malefic, is this bad?
BPHS Ch. 34 classes the 11th lord as giving evil effects, but Ch. 24 reads it at home favourably. The two passages are about different things, and BPHS keeps both.
Is the 11th lord always strong in the 11th?
By sign, yes: it is always in its own sign. Combustion, company and the second lordship can still reduce it, as BPHS strength depends on more than sign.
Does it promise steady income?
The verse speaks of gains in undertakings as a classical tendency. This app does not forecast income from a placement.
Which Ascendant can give an exalted 11th lord here?
Only Scorpio rising: Mercury in Virgo, exalted in its early degrees.
What else does the 11th lord bring into the 11th?
Its second house, if any: the 8th for Taurus and Scorpio rising, the 6th for Gemini and Sagittarius, the 12th for Pisces, the 4th for Cancer and Capricorn, the 2nd for Leo and Aquarius and the 10th for Aries. BPHS Sl. 145-148 ask for both lordships to be read.
How common is it?
It occurred in 240 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.0%.
