In short

The 11th lord in the 12th house is the ruler of gains placed in the house of expenditure, loss and distant places. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 132 reads it as always depending on good deeds, sensuous, with many spouses and friendships among foreigners, the text's own wording. For five Ascendants the 11th lord also owns a dusthana and the engine reports a Vipareeta yoga.

What the placement means

"The 11th lord in the 12th house" is the lord of gains, income, friends and elder siblings standing in the house of expenditure, loss, distant places, sleep and release. The house of income carries its affairs into the house of outflow.

The 12th is a dusthana and, counted from the 11th, the 2nd: the wealth house of the house of gains. The two houses are adjacent, so the lord has moved one sign along, from the income house into the spending house. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, friends and elder siblings.

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) governs expenditure, losses, distant places and release.

What BPHS says about the 11th lord in the 12th

Ch. 24 Sl. 132: if the lord of Labh is in the Vyaya Bhava, the native "will always depend on good deeds", will be sensuous, will have many wives and "will befriend barbarians". The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse's vocabulary belongs to its time; read in neutral terms, it describes a person who relies on merit, enjoys pleasures, has more than one partner, and keeps company with foreigners or outsiders, the 12th house's distant people. This app reports it as the text's claim and does not turn it into a description of anyone.

It is notable what the verse does not say: it does not say gains are lost, although the 11th lord is in the house of loss. Sl. 145-148 scale it: full, half or a quarter by strength, with both lordships read for a planet owning two houses.

Vipareeta yogas through the second lordship

For five Ascendants the 11th lord also owns a dusthana, and in the 12th it then meets the engine's Vipareeta rule. For Taurus and Scorpio rising it owns the 8th, so the engine reports Sarala Yoga; for Gemini and Sagittarius rising it owns the 6th, giving Harsha Yoga; for Pisces rising Saturn owns the 11th and 12th, sits in its own Aquarius, and the engine reports Vimala Yoga. The engine's source for these yogas is Advanced Predictive Astrology, not BPHS.

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the 12th lord's effects depend on association, and Ch. 42 Sl. 13 adds that a graha joined with the 6th, 8th or 12th lord, without a Kon lord's aspect, harms finances in its Dasha. The 11th lord in the 12th meets the 12th lord whenever that lord is at home. The engine tests neither rule. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse here.

The 11th lord and the 12th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Pisces rising is the own-sign row (Saturn in Aquarius, moolatrikona by degree), and the Vimala case. Aquarius rising puts Jupiter, owner of the 2nd and 11th, debilitated in Capricorn: both wealth lordships at their weakest in the house of loss. Leo rising puts Mercury, also owner of the 2nd and 11th, in an enemy sign (Cancer). Five rows are friendly: Taurus (Jupiter in Aries), Cancer (Venus in Gemini), Virgo (the Moon in Leo), Scorpio (Mercury in Libra) and Capricorn (Mars in Sagittarius). The rest are neutral.

The two wealth-lord rows

Leo and Aquarius rising are worth reading together. In both, one planet owns the 2nd and the 11th, the two houses most associated with money, and in both that planet falls in the 12th in a weak sign: Mercury in Cancer, an enemy sign, for Leo; Jupiter in Capricorn, debilitated, for Aquarius. No Vipareeta yoga forms in either row, because the 2nd and 11th are not dusthanas. Sl. 132 then applies at a reduced share, with the 2nd lord's own verse for the 12th (Sl. 24: adventurous, without wealth, interested in others' wealth) applying alongside it, as Sl. 145-148's two-lordship rule asks.

The remaining rows bring other second houses into the 12th. For Aries rising Saturn owns the 10th and stands in Pisces, neutral: the lord of work and gains in the house of expenditure, which echoes the 10th lord's own verse for the 12th (Sl. 120). For Cancer and Capricorn rising the second house is the 4th, an angle: Venus in Gemini and Mars in Sagittarius, both friendly. For Virgo and Libra rising the lord is a luminary with no second house: the Moon in Leo (friendly) and the Sun in Virgo (neutral). In those rows Sl. 132 stands alone or with an angle lordship, and no Vipareeta yoga arises.

Strength changes the reading

Because Sl. 132 is mixed rather than plainly negative, dignity scales both its favourable and unfavourable clauses. Combustion and company come next.

From the 12th, every graha aspects the 6th. A Mars 11th lord also aspects the 3rd and the 7th; a Jupiter the 4th and the 8th; a Saturn the 2nd and the 9th. None of them aspects the 11th from here, since it is the sign just behind.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 12th lord in the 11th (Sl. 143), reads as losses, being brought up by others, and occasional gain through others. Both together are a parivartana between the adjacent houses of gain and loss. The 11th lord in the 11th (Sl. 131) gains in every undertaking and the 11th lord in the 1st (Sl. 121) is always endowed with gains.

Worked example: Aquarius rising, Jupiter in Capricorn

The engine's deterministic search found: 24 March 1985, 05:33 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Aquarius 21.28. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Aquarius rising the 11th house is Sagittarius and the 11th lord is Jupiter, which also owns Pisces, the 2nd.
  • The 12th house is Capricorn. Jupiter is there at 15.92 degrees, Shravana pada 2, "Debilitated"; not retrograde, not combust.
  • No other planet is in the 12th. The Lagna lord Saturn, which is also the 12th lord, is in Scorpio, the 10th, retrograde.
  • The engine reports a Raja Yoga and Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga links among Venus, Mercury and the Sun in Pisces, the 2nd, which Jupiter owns.

This is the weak wealth-lord row in practice: Jupiter, owner of both money houses, debilitated in the 12th. On Sl. 145-148's scale the verse comes through at a quarter. The 2nd house Jupiter owns, however, holds an exalted Venus (the Aquarius yogakaraka), a debilitated Mercury and the Sun, and the engine's yogas in this chart all come from that house. Jupiter from the 12th aspects the 6th (its 7th), the 4th (its 5th) and the 8th (its 9th), none of them its own houses.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 11th lord in the 12th house in 244, or 8.1%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 11th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the twelfth sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its second lordship: a dusthana for five Ascendants.
  4. Run the yoga calculator to see whether a Vipareeta yoga is reported.

When does it form a Vipareeta yoga?
When the 11th lord also owns the 6th, 8th or 12th: Taurus and Scorpio rising (Sarala), Gemini and Sagittarius (Harsha), Pisces (Vimala).
Which Ascendants give the strongest and weakest versions?
By sign, Pisces rising is strongest (Saturn in its own Aquarius); Aquarius rising is weakest (Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn).
What does the reverse placement say?
