In short
The 11th lord in the 1st house is the ruler of gains, income and elder siblings placed in the Ascendant. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 121 reads it as genuine, rich, happy, even-sighted, a poet and eloquent, always endowed with gains. That is a favourable verse for a lordship Ch. 34 lists among the evil ones, and by sign the lord is debilitated for two Ascendants and exalted for one.
What the placement means
"The 11th lord in the 1st house" is the lord of gains, income, fulfilled aims, friends and elder siblings, standing in the Ascendant, the house of the self. As a house lord it brings the 11th house's affairs to the person directly.
The 11th is an upachaya, a house of growth; the 1st is both an angle and a trine. Counted from the 11th, the 1st is the 3rd, the house of effort relative to gains. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses), so the placement depends on a known birth time; see when the birth time is unknown.
The two houses involved
The 11th house (Labha Bhava) is read for gains, income, friends and elder siblings.
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body, temperament and self, the point from which every house is counted.
What BPHS says about the 11th lord in the 1st
Ch. 24 Sl. 121 opens the 11th lord's twelve verses: if the lord of Labh is in the Tanu Bhava, the native "will be genuine in disposition", rich, happy, even-sighted, a poet, eloquent in speech, and "always endowed with gains". The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse joins two kinds of quality: the 11th's gains and wealth, and a set of personal traits (sincerity, an even view of people, a way with words) that belong to the 1st. "Even-sighted" is the translation's phrase; it reads as impartial or balanced.
Sl. 145-148 scale the verse: full, half or a quarter of the result by strength, and both lordships read for a planet owning two houses, with contrary results cancelling.
A favourable verse for an "evil" lordship
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say that a graha owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects, and that within that group the significance rises in order, so the 11th lord is the most marked of the three. Ch. 24 Sl. 121 nonetheless reads the 11th lord in the Lagna favourably. The two passages are about different things: Ch. 34 classifies a planet by what it owns, Ch. 24 describes what happens when that planet sits in a given house. A reader following BPHS keeps both: the planet is, in Ch. 34's terms, a functional malefic for the chart, and its presence in the Lagna gives the Ch. 24 reading, scaled by strength.
The Bhrigu Sutras speak of the 11th lord only once, inside the Moon-in-the-11th sutras: if the 11th lord is weak the native will be put to much expenditure, if strong there will be gains. That is consistent with Sl. 145-148's scaling, though it is said of a different configuration. Saravali gives no verse on the 11th lord in the 1st.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's table. Because the 1st house is the rising sign, the third column repeats the Ascendant. Dignity is the engine's sign-level result from natural relationships (a real chart can move the tier one step).
| Ascendant | 11th lord | 1st house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Saturn | Aries | Debilitated | 10th |
| Taurus | Jupiter | Taurus | Enemy sign | 8th |
| Gemini | Mars | Gemini | Enemy sign | 6th |
| Cancer | Venus | Cancer | Enemy sign | 4th |
| Leo | Mercury | Leo | Friendly sign | 2nd |
| Virgo | Moon | Virgo | Friendly sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Libra | Sun | Libra | Debilitated | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Scorpio | Mercury | Scorpio | Neutral | 8th |
| Sagittarius | Venus | Sagittarius | Neutral | 6th |
| Capricorn | Mars | Capricorn | Exalted | 4th |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | Aquarius | Neutral | 2nd |
| Pisces | Saturn | Pisces | Neutral | 12th |
Capricorn rising is the one exalted row: Mars, owning the 4th and 11th, exalted in Capricorn. Two rows are debilitated: Saturn in Aries for Aries rising (Saturn owns the 10th and 11th) and the Sun in Libra for Libra rising. Three are enemy signs: Jupiter in Taurus (Taurus rising, where Jupiter owns the 8th and 11th), Mars in Gemini (Gemini rising, 6th and 11th) and Venus in Cancer (Cancer rising, 4th and 11th). Leo and Virgo rising give friendly signs (Mercury in Leo, the Moon in Virgo).
Second lordships brought into the Lagna
Because the 1st is the self, the second house the 11th lord owns comes with it into the most personal house of the chart. For Taurus and Scorpio rising that second house is the 8th; for Gemini and Sagittarius rising, the 6th; for Pisces rising, the 12th. Those are the three dusthanas, so for five of the twelve Ascendants the 11th lord in the Lagna brings a dusthana lordship as well as the 11th. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the second house is the 4th, an angle; for Leo and Aquarius rising, the 2nd; for Aries rising, the 10th. Sl. 145-148 ask for each to be read beside Sl. 121.
Two rows deserve a closer look. For Aries rising the 11th lord is Saturn, which also owns the 10th; in Aries it is debilitated, so the Lagna holds a weak planet that carries both the house of work and the house of gains. For Capricorn rising the 11th lord is Mars, which also owns the 4th; exalted in Capricorn, it puts an angle lord and the gains lord, at full strength, in the Lagna. The same verse, Sl. 121, applies to both, and Sl. 145-148 would give it in a quarter in the first case and in full in the second.
The luminary rows are simpler. For Virgo rising the 11th lord is the Moon, in Virgo a friendly sign, and for Libra rising the Sun, debilitated in Libra. Neither owns another house, so nothing else enters the reading of Sl. 121 through lordship; dignity alone scales it.
Strength changes the reading
The planet's dignity scales the verse first. Combustion and company come next; planets sharing the Lagna join the person as directly as the 11th lord does.
From the 1st, every graha aspects the 7th. A Mars 11th lord also aspects the 4th and the 8th; a Jupiter the 5th and the 9th, both trines; a Saturn the 3rd and the 10th. So for Taurus and Aquarius rising a Jupiter 11th lord in the Lagna aspects both trines, while for Aries and Pisces rising a Saturn 11th lord there aspects the 10th.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the Lagna lord in the 11th (Sl. 11), reads as always endowed with gains, good qualities and fame, and many wives. Both together are a parivartana between the self and the house of gains. The 11th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 122) turns toward accomplishments and wealth; the 11th lord in the 12th (Sl. 132) toward good deeds and foreign company. Sl. 121 is the 11th lord's verse about the person.
Worked example: Scorpio rising, Mercury in the Lagna
This is the first moment in the engine's deterministic search: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 28.81. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- With Scorpio rising the 11th house is Virgo, so the 11th lord is Mercury, which also owns Gemini, the 8th.
- Mercury is in Scorpio at 24.36 degrees, Jyeshtha pada 3, in the 1st, "Friendly sign" (neutral by nature, lifted by the chart's temporary relationship).
- Saturn (Scorpio 1.09) and Ketu (1.51) share the Lagna.
- The Lagna lord Mars is in Aquarius in the 4th; Saturn is in Scorpio. The engine reports a Parivarthana Yoga between Mars and Saturn.
On Sl. 145-148's scale a friendly-sign, uncombust Mercury is a good middle case for Sl. 121. Its second lordship is the 8th, a dusthana, so the chart is one of the five where the 11th lord brings a dusthana into the Lagna. The Lagna itself also holds Saturn, the 3rd and 4th lord, and the exchange between Saturn and the Lagna lord Mars ties the 1st and 4th houses together. The engine's Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga in this chart comes from other pairs (Venus with Mars, the Sun with Jupiter), not from Mercury.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 11th lord in the 1st house in 290, or 9.7%. That is a count of sampled moments, not people.
