In short
The 1st lord in the 11th house places the ruler of the rising sign in the house of gains, income and fulfilled wishes. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 11 reads it simply: the native will always have gains, good qualities and fame, with a many-wives clause that belongs to the text. By sign, the lord is exalted for Taurus and Cancer rising, debilitated for Pisces rising, and in an enemy's sign for five Ascendants.
What the placement means
The 1st house lord, the ruler of the rising sign, stands for the person. In the 11th house, the sign before the Ascendant's own 12th, it sits in the house of gains, income and prosperity. The placement ties the self to what comes in.
The 11th is an upachaya (house of growth), not an angle, trine or dusthana. BPHS calls the ownership of the 11th troublesome, yet Ch. 24's verse for the Lagna lord occupying it is short and favourable; the difference between owning and occupying a house is the key to reading it.
The two houses involved
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body and nature of the person (BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2).
The 11th house (Labha Bhava) is, in Ch. 11 Sl. 12, the house of "all articles", the son's wife, income, prosperity and quadrupeds. Labha means gain. The house page covers its range.
What BPHS says about the Lagna lord in the 11th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 11 says the native "will always be endowed with gains, good qualities, fame and many wives". bphs-alt.txt reads the same. The word "always" stands out: like "doubtlessly" in the verse for the 10th, it is one of the few intensifiers in the chapter.
The verse is almost a gloss on the house's name. Gains are the 11th; fame and good qualities are the Lagna lord's contribution. The many-wives clause recurs through the chapter for several houses (the 2nd and 11th among them) and is reported here as the text's idiom for a male native, not as a forecast about anyone.
The 11th-house chapter names one combination built on this placement. BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 8 says that if the 11th lord is in the Lagna and the Lagna lord is in the 11th, the native gains a large sum ("1000 Nishkas") in his 33rd year. That is the classical text giving a date; this app does not forecast from it. The two conditions together are a sign exchange, which the engine flags as Parivartana Yoga.
One rule should not be misapplied here. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says a planet owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects. That is about lordship, so it applies to the 11th lord, not to the Lagna lord occupying the 11th. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then scales Sl. 11 by strength. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no verse of their own for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The table is the engine's lordship arithmetic, with the dignity its rule gives the planet in the 11th sign when no chart is supplied.
| Ascendant | 1st lord | Other house it rules | 11th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | 8th (Scorpio) | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Taurus | Venus | 6th (Libra) | Pisces | Exalted |
| Gemini | Mercury | 4th (Virgo) | Aries | Neutral |
| Cancer | Moon | none | Taurus | Exalted |
| Leo | Sun | none | Gemini | Neutral |
| Virgo | Mercury | 10th (Gemini) | Cancer | Enemy sign |
| Libra | Venus | 8th (Taurus) | Leo | Enemy sign |
| Scorpio | Mars | 6th (Aries) | Virgo | Enemy sign |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 4th (Pisces) | Libra | Enemy sign |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 2nd (Aquarius) | Scorpio | Enemy sign |
| Aquarius | Saturn | 12th (Capricorn) | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Pisces | Jupiter | 10th (Sagittarius) | Capricorn | Debilitated |
The table is lopsided. Two Ascendants give exaltation: Taurus rising (Venus in Pisces) and Cancer rising (the Moon in Taurus). One gives debilitation: Pisces rising, Jupiter in Capricorn. Five more (Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn) put the lord in an enemy's sign, and the remaining four are neutral. No row gives a friendly or own sign. The verse's "always" therefore meets a wide range of strengths, and Sl. 145-148 is the text's own instruction for how far that should reduce it.
The second lordships brought into the 11th also vary: the 8th for Aries and Libra rising, the 6th for Taurus and Scorpio, the 4th for Gemini and Sagittarius, the 10th for Virgo and Pisces, the 2nd for Capricorn and the 12th for Aquarius. Capricorn rising is worth noting because both houses Saturn owns there, the 1st and the 2nd, are houses of the self and its resources, and it carries both into the house of gain.
Strength changes the reading
Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 gives the weakening conditions for any Lagna lord: debilitation, combustion and an enemy's sign, and conjunction with a malefic. In this table those are common, so a reader is more likely here than in most houses to find a Lagna lord that BPHS would treat as middling or weak. The two exalted cases are the reverse: Venus in Pisces for Taurus rising (also the 6th lord) and the Moon in Taurus for Cancer rising (lord of nothing else). The Moon's case is the cleanest: an exalted luminary carrying only the Lagna lordship into the house of gains.
Companions in the 11th matter in the usual way. The engine counts the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu as malefics and Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon as benefics. Aspects on the 11th come from the 5th by the seventh-house aspect, and from the special aspects of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn; see drishti.
The placement also has a fixed geometry worth knowing. From the 11th the Lagna lord casts its seventh-house aspect on the 5th, the house of children and intelligence, in every chart where it occurs. And the 11th is the 12th counted from the 12th: the sign immediately before the house of loss. Neither fact is commented on in Ch. 24, so this page does not read meaning into them; they are listed because a reader checking a chart will see the aspect in the engine's output. Ch. 11 Sl. 12 also lists "son's wife" among the 11th's significations, a reminder that the classical houses carry relationships as well as money.
Worked example: Capricorn rising, Saturn in Scorpio
The engine's deterministic search returned: 10 January 1985, 08:37 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Capricorn 17.6. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Capricorn rising makes Saturn the 1st lord; it also owns Aquarius, the 2nd.
- Saturn is in Scorpio at 1.91 degrees, Vishakha pada 4: the 11th house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine gives "Neutral" in this chart, one step better than the sign-only Enemy label in the table.
- Ketu is in Scorpio at 1.02, within a degree of Saturn.
- The 11th lord, Mars, is in Aquarius in the 2nd, with Venus; Jupiter is in its own sign, Sagittarius, in the 12th but combust. No graha other than the nodes aspects the 11th.
Read with Sl. 145-148 this is a middling Lagna lord: neutral in this chart, unaspected, and closely joined by Ketu, which Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says gives results according to the lords it is with. The two lords are also linked by sign: the 11th lord Mars sits in Aquarius, one of Saturn's signs, while Saturn sits in Scorpio, one of Mars's. That is a sign exchange, which the engine flags as Parivartana Yoga, but it is not the exchange of Ch. 22 Sl. 8. Mars occupies Saturn's other sign, the 2nd, not the Lagna, so the text's condition (11th lord in the Lagna) is not met.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 1st lord in the 11th house in 279, or 9.3%, the highest of the Lagna lord's twelve placements in the engine's sample. It describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 11th lord in the 1st house. The neighbours are the 1st lord in the 10th and the 1st lord in the 12th; the other upachaya placements include the 1st lord in the 3rd. For the worked example's planet see Saturn in the 11th house and Saturn in Vedic astrology. Exchanges are explained under Parivartana Yoga. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
Questions about the 1st lord in the 11th house
- What does BPHS say about the 1st lord in the 11th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 11: the native will always have gains, good qualities and fame, and (in the text's wording) many wives. Sl. 145-148 scales the result by strength.
- Does it mean high income?
- The verse speaks of gains. This app reports that as the text's rule about a position; it does not forecast income.
- What if the 11th lord is in the 1st as well?
- Then the lords have exchanged signs. BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 8 gives a specific gain in the 33rd year for that exchange; this page reports the text and does not forecast from it.
- Is the 11th a bad house to own?
- Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says owners of the 3rd, 6th and 11th give evil effects. That concerns the planet that rules the 11th, not the Lagna lord occupying it.
- How common is it?
- 279 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (9.3%) in the engine's sample.
