House lords

The Ascendant lord placed in the 3rd house: the BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 3 "lion in valour" reading, the upachaya question, a 12-Ascendant table with dignity, and an engine-computed Leo-rising chart with a debilitated Sun.

In short

The 1st lord in the 3rd house puts the ruler of the rising sign in the house of courage, effort, siblings and short journeys. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 3 compares such a native to a lion in valour, with wealth, honour, intelligence and happiness. The planet's dignity there swings from exalted (Mars for Scorpio rising) to debilitated (the Sun for Leo, Saturn for Aquarius).

What the placement means

The 1st house lord is the ruler of the rising sign. Placed in the 3rd house, two signs after the Ascendant, it carries the person into the house the texts read for courage, effort, younger siblings, attendants and short journeys. In plain terms the placement ties the self to its own initiative.

The 3rd is neither an angle nor a trine, and it is not one of the three houses the engine lists as dusthanas (6, 8, 12). It is one of the upachaya houses, the houses of growth (3, 6, 10, 11). BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 3 nonetheless gives the Lagna lord here one of its most emphatic verses.

The two houses involved

The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) stands for the body, vigour and temperament (BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2). Its lord brings those qualities, and their strength or weakness, into whichever house it occupies.

The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is listed in Ch. 11 Sl. 4 for valour, servants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction, journeys and the death of parents. Ch. 14 builds the house's own rules around siblings and courage. The house page has the detail; this page is about the Lagna lord arriving there.

What BPHS says about the Lagna lord in the 3rd

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 3 reads: if the Lagna lord is in the 3rd, the native "will equal a lion in valour", be endowed with all kinds of wealth, be honourable, have two wives, and be intelligent and happy. The alternative translation in bphs-alt.txt is word for word the same. Like every verse in the chapter it addresses a male native; the two-wives clause is reported here as the text's statement, not as anything this app predicts.

The lion image is the verse's centre. Valour is the first signification Ch. 11 Sl. 4 gives the 3rd, and the verse reads the Lagna lord's arrival there as the person taking on that quality fully. The rest of the list (wealth, honour, intelligence, happiness) is general good fortune rather than anything specific to the 3rd. Notice what the verse does not say: it says nothing about siblings, although siblings are the 3rd house's best-known signification. For the sibling side, BPHS looks at the 3rd lord and Mars in Ch. 14, not at the Lagna lord.

One rule elsewhere in BPHS is easily confused with this placement. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says that any planet owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects. That is about a planet that rules the 3rd, not one that sits in it. The Lagna lord in the 3rd is still the Lagna lord, which the same passage calls "specially auspicious". Where the Lagna lord also happens to own the 3rd, or 6th, or 11th, both rules apply at once, and Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 says to read the two lordships together, with contrary indications cancelling.

The Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no verse of their own for this placement; the Bhrigu Sutras speak of the 3rd lord's strength for siblings, which is a different planet.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The table gives the engine's lordship arithmetic for all twelve Ascendants, with the dignity the engine assigns the planet in the 3rd sign when no chart is given.

The 1st lord and the 3rd-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

This placement has three extremes. For Scorpio rising, Mars (lord of the 1st and 6th) goes into Capricorn, its exaltation sign. For Leo rising, the Sun goes into Libra, and for Aquarius rising Saturn goes into Aries; both are debilitation signs. Three more Ascendants (Aries, Taurus, Pisces) put the lord in an enemy's sign. Only two (Gemini and Cancer) give a friendly sign, and the remaining four are neutral. On the sign-only measure, then, the 3rd is a harder place for the Lagna lord than the 2nd or the 1st.

Strength changes the reading

Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 makes the lion verse conditional on strength: full results for a strong lord, half for a middling one, a quarter for a weak one. BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 separately warns that a Lagna lord in debilitation, combustion or an enemy's sign brings illness. For Leo and Aquarius rising, then, the Ch. 24 verse and the Ch. 12 warning point in opposite directions, and Sl. 145-148's instruction that contrary results cancel is the text's own way of settling it.

Ch. 14 adds conditions about the 3rd house itself that sit alongside the Lagna lord. Sl. 1 says a benefic in or aspecting the 3rd gives siblings and courage. Sl. 2 says the 3rd lord together with Mars aspecting the 3rd, or both in it, gives good results for the house. A Lagna lord in the 3rd is therefore read in the company of whatever else is there: if the 3rd lord or Mars joins it, Ch. 14 applies directly.

Ch. 14 also contains warnings that apply when the Lagna lord is itself one of the planets it names. Sl. 14 reads the Sun in the 3rd as harmful to elder siblings, Saturn there to younger ones, and Mars to both. For Leo rising the Lagna lord in the 3rd is the Sun; for Capricorn and Aquarius rising it is Saturn; for Aries and Scorpio rising it is Mars. In those charts the Lagna-lord verse and the Ch. 14 sibling verse are about the same planet, and the reader has two classical statements to weigh rather than one. This app reports both as the text gives them and does not treat either as a forecast about a family.

Worked example: Leo rising, the Sun debilitated in Libra

The engine found this chart by a deterministic search, not by selecting an illustrative case: 16 November 1985, 01:35 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 21.66. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator to see the same positions.

  • Leo rising makes the Sun the 1st lord; the Sun rules no other sign.
  • The Sun is in Libra at 29.75 degrees, Vishakha nakshatra, pada 3: the 3rd house. The engine marks it "Debilitated". It is in the last quarter-degree of the sign.
  • Venus shares the 3rd at Libra 14.13 and is in moolatrikona. Venus rules Libra (the 3rd) and Taurus (the 10th) for Leo rising, so the 3rd lord sits in its own house beside the Lagna lord.
  • Ketu is also in Libra at 14.61, within half a degree of Venus. Under the engine's aspect rule no other graha aspects the 3rd.

This chart shows the tension described above. Sl. 3 reads the Lagna lord in the 3rd as valour and good fortune; Ch. 12 reads a debilitated Lagna lord as a sign of bodily trouble; Sl. 145-148 scales results down for a weak planet. Against that, the 3rd house itself is strongly tenanted: its own lord, Venus, is in moolatrikona there. Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 lists the 3rd lord in an angle, a trine, exaltation or a friendly division as favourable for siblings; own sign in the 3rd is none of those exactly, so that verse neither applies nor is contradicted. Ketu joins both, and Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says a node gives the results of the lords it is with. BPHS gives no single verdict for such a mixture, and this page does not invent one.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 1st lord in the 3rd house in 266, or 8.9%. That is a property of the sampled moments, not of people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 3rd lord in the 1st house (Sl. 25), gives self-made wealth and valour but a lack of learning. When both happen together the two lords have exchanged signs, which BPHS treats as a parivartana. The adjacent cases are the 1st lord in the 2nd and the 1st lord in the 4th. For the planet in the worked example, see the Sun in the 3rd house and the Sun in Vedic astrology. Your rising sign comes from the Lagna calculator.

Questions about the 1st lord in the 3rd house

What does BPHS say about the 1st lord in the 3rd house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 3: the native will equal a lion in valour, have all kinds of wealth, be honourable, intelligent and happy, and (in the text's wording) have two wives. Sl. 145-148 scales this by the planet's strength.
Is the 3rd house a bad place for the Lagna lord?
BPHS does not read it as one; Sl. 3 is a favourable verse. The rule that owners of the 3rd, 6th and 11th give evil effects (Ch. 34) is about ownership, not occupation.
Does it say anything about brothers and sisters?
Sl. 3 does not. BPHS reads siblings from the 3rd house, its lord and Mars in Ch. 14, so those are the factors to check.
Which Ascendants give a debilitated Lagna lord here?
Leo rising (the Sun in Libra) and Aquarius rising (Saturn in Aries). Scorpio rising gives the opposite case, Mars exalted in Capricorn.
How common is the placement?
266 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.9%) in the engine's sample.
