In short
The 3rd lord in the 1st house brings the ruler of courage, effort and siblings into the Ascendant. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 25 reads it as self-made wealth, devotion, valour and intelligence, though "devoid of learning". Ch. 14 counts a 3rd lord in an angle or trine, which the Lagna is, as favourable for siblings, while Ch. 34 warns that owning the 3rd is itself a mark against a planet.
What the placement means
The 3rd house lord carries the 3rd house's matters: courage, personal effort, younger siblings, attendants and short journeys. Placed in the 1st, it brings them into the house of the self. The person takes on the character of the 3rd: their own initiative becomes part of who they are.
The 3rd is an upachaya and its lord is one BPHS treats with some caution, because Ch. 34 says owners of the 3rd, 6th and 11th give evil effects. In the 1st, though, the lord occupies an angle and a trine at once, which the sibling rules of Ch. 14 read favourably. The placement sits between those two readings.
The two houses involved
The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction, journeys and the death of parents in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4.
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body, intellect, vigour and nature in Ch. 11 Sl. 2. The house pages have both lists in full.
What BPHS says about the 3rd lord in the 1st
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 25 opens the 3rd-lord series: with the 3rd lord in the Lagna, the native "will have self-made wealth, be disposed to worship, be valorous and be intelligent, although devoid of learning". bphs-alt.txt has the same text.
The verse carries the 3rd house's character into the person. "Valorous" is the 3rd's first signification; "self-made wealth" is wealth earned by one's own effort, the 3rd's other theme. The qualification "intelligent, although devoid of learning" separates native intelligence (a 1st-house matter) from formal learning, which BPHS elsewhere reads from the 5th and the Chaturvimshamsa. The verse does not mention siblings at all.
The 3rd-house chapter fills that gap. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 says happiness regarding siblings comes if Mars or the 3rd lord is in an angle, a trine, exaltation or a friendly division; the Lagna is an angle and a trine. Sl. 4 adds that a female planet as 3rd lord indicates sisters and a male planet brothers, with mixed results for mixed natures, all to be judged by strength (Sl. 15). The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus, in their sutras for Mercury and Jupiter in the 3rd, add that a strong 3rd lord gives long-lived brothers and a weak or afflicted one the opposite, with a timid native.
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 is the counterweight: "Any Grah, owning Sahaj, Ari, or Labh Bhava, will give evil effects." That is a statement about the planet's ownership, and it travels with the 3rd lord wherever it goes. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then says that when one planet's lordships point in contrary directions, they cancel. The Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no verse for this placement. See trika and upachaya for how these house groups are defined.
Set beside the reverse verse
The reverse placement, the Lagna lord in the 3rd (Ch. 24 Sl. 3), compares the native to a lion in valour and adds wealth, honour, intelligence and happiness. Both verses share valour and intelligence, which is the common ground of the 1st and 3rd houses in BPHS. Sl. 3 is the more generous of the two; Sl. 25 adds the self-made quality of wealth and the limit on learning. When both occur together the two lords have exchanged signs, which the engine reports as Parivartana Yoga.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 3rd lord in the rising sign:
| Ascendant | 3rd lord | Other house it rules | 1st house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mercury | 6th (Virgo) | Aries | Neutral |
| Taurus | Moon | none | Taurus | Exalted |
| Gemini | Sun | none | Gemini | Neutral |
| Cancer | Mercury | 12th (Gemini) | Cancer | Enemy sign |
| Leo | Venus | 10th (Taurus) | Leo | Enemy sign |
| Virgo | Mars | 8th (Aries) | Virgo | Enemy sign |
| Libra | Jupiter | 6th (Pisces) | Libra | Enemy sign |
| Scorpio | Saturn | 4th (Aquarius) | Scorpio | Enemy sign |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | 2nd (Capricorn) | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Capricorn | Jupiter | 12th (Sagittarius) | Capricorn | Debilitated |
| Aquarius | Mars | 10th (Scorpio) | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Pisces | Venus | 8th (Libra) | Pisces | Exalted |
Two rows give exaltation: Taurus rising, where the Moon (3rd lord, owning nothing else) is exalted in Taurus, and Pisces rising, where Venus (lord of the 3rd and 8th) is exalted in Pisces. Capricorn rising gives the one debilitation: Jupiter, lord of the 3rd and 12th, in Capricorn. Five rows give an enemy's sign and four a neutral one; none gives a friendly sign. On sign alone, then, this is a mostly weak table with two strong exceptions.
The second lordships vary in a way that matters for Ch. 34. For Aries and Libra rising the 3rd lord also owns the 6th, so two "evil" lordships of Ch. 34 sit in the Lagna. For Leo and Aquarius it also owns the 10th, an angle; for Virgo and Pisces the 8th; for Cancer and Capricorn the 12th; for Scorpio the 4th; for Sagittarius the 2nd. Taurus and Gemini rising give luminaries (the Moon, the Sun), which own no other house.
Strength changes the reading
Strength decides how much of Sl. 25 comes through, and also how Ch. 14 and the Bhrigu Sutras read the siblings. Dignity, combustion and company are the factors. Ch. 14 Sl. 1-2 adds that a benefic in or aspecting the 3rd, or the 3rd lord together with Mars aspecting it, gives good results for the house; with the 3rd lord in the 1st, the 3rd lord casts its own seventh-house aspect on the 7th, not on the 3rd, so the 3rd house relies on other planets for that.
Worked example: Scorpio rising, Saturn in Scorpio
The engine's deterministic search returned: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 28.81. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Scorpio rising makes Capricorn the 3rd, so Saturn is the 3rd lord. Saturn also owns Aquarius, the 4th.
- Saturn is in Scorpio at 1.09 degrees, Vishakha pada 4: the 1st house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine gives "Neutral" in this chart (Enemy sign by sign alone).
- Mercury (24.36) and Ketu (1.51) are also in Scorpio.
- The Lagna lord, Mars, is in Aquarius in the 4th, which is Saturn's sign; Saturn is in Scorpio, which is Mars's. The two have exchanged signs, and the engine reports Parivartana Yoga.
Saturn here is a 3rd lord in an angle-and-trine, the Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 condition for happiness through siblings; it is neutral in this chart and not combust, so it is in the middle of Sl. 145-148's scale. It also owns the 4th, an angle, so Ch. 34's caution about the 3rd lordship is offset in part by an angle lordship. Saturn is a male planet, which Ch. 14 Sl. 4 associates with brothers. And because Mars, the Lagna lord, is in Saturn's 4th-house sign while Saturn is in the Lagna, the chart links the person, the home and the 3rd house through one exchange. Ketu sits within half a degree of Saturn; Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says a node gives results according to the lords it joins.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 3rd lord in the 1st house in 256, or 8.5%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 1st lord in the 3rd house. The adjacent placements are the 3rd lord in the 2nd and the 3rd lord in the 12th. BPHS Ch. 7 reads siblings from the Drekkana, computed by the Drekkana (D3) calculator. For the worked example's planet see Saturn in the 1st house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
Questions about the 3rd lord in the 1st house
- What does BPHS say about the 3rd lord in the 1st house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 25: self-made wealth, devotion, valour and intelligence, though without formal learning.
- Is the 3rd lord a bad planet to have in the Lagna?
- BPHS Ch. 34 says owners of the 3rd give evil effects, but Ch. 14 reads a 3rd lord in an angle or trine favourably for siblings, and Ch. 24's verse is mostly positive. Sl. 145-148 weighs them together.
- What does it say about brothers and sisters?
- Sl. 25 is silent on them. Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 says a 3rd lord in an angle or trine gives happiness through siblings, and Sl. 4 reads brothers or sisters from the planet's sex.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest planet here?
- Taurus rising (the Moon exalted in Taurus) and Pisces rising (Venus exalted in Pisces). Capricorn rising gives the weakest, Jupiter debilitated.
- Why does the verse say "devoid of learning"?
- The text gives no reason. BPHS reads learning from the 5th house (Ch. 11 Sl. 6) and from the Chaturvimshamsa (Ch. 7), so Sl. 25's limit is one statement among several a reader would weigh.
- How common is it?
- 256 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.5%) in the engine's sample.
