House lords

The 3rd lord placed in the 12th house: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 36, the Ch. 23 rules on what the 12th's spending goes to, the engine's Vipareeta flags, the 12-Ascendant table and an engine-computed Capricorn-rising chart with Jupiter in its own sign in the 12th and all three Vipareeta yogas present.

In short

The 3rd lord in the 12th house moves the ruler of courage, effort and siblings into the house of expenditure and loss. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 36 reads it as spending on bad ends and a difficult father, but fortune through a woman. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 3rd lord also owns the 12th and sits in its own sign there, which BPHS Ch. 23 reads as spending on good causes and the engine reports as Vimala Yoga.

What the placement means

The 3rd house lord rules courage, effort, siblings and attendants. In the 12th house it sits in the house of expenditure, loss and, in BPHS Ch. 23, of wandering and final emancipation. Effort is placed in the house of outflow.

The 12th is a dusthana and the 10th house counted from the 3rd. BPHS reads the 12th mainly through what enters it, distinguishing spending on good causes from spending on bad ones, so this placement turns heavily on which planet the 3rd lord is.

The two houses involved

The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction and journeys in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4.

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) is expenses, the history of enemies and one's own death in Ch. 11 Sl. 13. The house pages develop both.

What BPHS says about the 3rd lord in the 12th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 36 says that with the 3rd lord in the 12th the native "will spend on evil deeds", will have a father the translation calls wicked, and "will be fortunate through a female". bphs-alt.txt has the same words.

The first clause is the 12th's expenditure, coloured by the 3rd lord's Ch. 34 reputation. The father clause and the female clause are unexplained in the verse. The last is the one favourable note. This page reports the critical clauses as the text's statements about a type, not as predictions about any person or family.

The 12th-house chapter qualifies the spending clause by condition. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 says expenses will be "on good accounts" if the 12th lord is with a benefic, in its own house or exalted, or if a benefic occupies the 12th. Sl. 13 is the reverse case: Saturn or Mars in the 12th without a benefic aspect means earnings through questionable means. Sl. 10 goes furthest: a benefic in the 12th with its lord exalted, or joined with or aspected by a benefic, points to final emancipation, a spiritual reading this page reports without endorsing. When the 3rd lord is a benefic, it is itself a benefic in the 12th for Sl. 1-4; when it also owns the 12th, it is the 12th lord in its own house.

Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 does not list the 12th among the 3rd lord's favourable houses for siblings, though exaltation or a friendly division still counts. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the owner of the 3rd gives evil effects and that the 12th lord's effects depend on its associations. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 36 by strength and reads both lordships. The Saravali and Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus give no separate verse.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, the 12th lord in the 3rd (Ch. 24 Sl. 135), reads: no happiness from siblings, dislike of others, and attention to one's own nourishment. Sl. 135 lets the 12th's loss fall on the 3rd house's siblings; Sl. 36 lets the 3rd lord's ownership colour the 12th's spending. Neither is favourable in tone, though Sl. 36 keeps one positive clause.

The 3rd lord and the 12th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 3rd lord also owns the 12th (Mercury, Jupiter), so it is in its own sign there, or moolatrikona for Jupiter by degree. Two rows give exaltation: Scorpio rising (Saturn, lord of the 3rd and 4th, in Libra) and Aquarius rising (Mars, lord of the 3rd and 10th, in Capricorn). Aries rising gives the one debilitation: Mercury, lord of the 3rd and 6th, in Pisces. Four rows give an enemy's sign, two a friendly one, one neutral.

This app's yoga detector applies a rule its code attributes to Advanced Predictive Astrology's case studies: a lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sitting in the 6th, 8th or 12th forms Harsha, Sarala or Vimala Yoga, the family known as Vipareeta Raja Yoga. A 3rd lord in the 12th triggers it when it also owns a dusthana: Vimala for Cancer and Capricorn rising (the 12th), Harsha for Aries and Libra (the 6th), Sarala for Virgo and Pisces (the 8th).

Strength changes the reading

The planet's nature decides which side of Ch. 23 applies: Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon are benefics in the engine's list; the Sun, Mars and Saturn malefics, and Sl. 13 names Saturn and Mars in the 12th specifically. Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 36. Aspects on the 12th come from the 6th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 4th and 8th, Mars from the 9th and 5th, and Saturn from the 10th and 3rd.

Worked example: Capricorn rising, Jupiter in Sagittarius

The engine's deterministic search returned: 10 January 1985, 08:37 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Capricorn 17.6. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Capricorn rising makes Pisces the 3rd, so Jupiter is the 3rd lord. Jupiter also owns Sagittarius, the 12th.
  • Jupiter is in Sagittarius at 29.96 degrees, Uttara Ashadha pada 1: the 12th house, its own sign, in the last fraction of a degree. The engine marks it combust.
  • The Sun (26.18) and Mercury (4.27, in an enemy's sign) are in Sagittarius too. For Capricorn rising the Sun owns the 8th and Mercury the 6th and 9th.
  • No graha other than the nodes aspects the 12th. The engine reports Vimala Yoga (Jupiter, the 12th lord, in the 12th), Sarala Yoga (the Sun, the 8th lord, in the 12th) and Harsha Yoga (Mercury, the 6th lord, in the 12th).

This chart puts all three dusthana lords in the 12th, so every one of the engine's Vipareeta yogas fires at once. For BPHS, the relevant rule is Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4: the 12th lord is in its own house and a benefic (Jupiter) occupies the 12th, so the text's condition for spending on good accounts is met. Against that, Jupiter is combust, the weak side of Sl. 145-148's scale, and its companions are a malefic (the Sun) and a Mercury in an enemy's sign. Sl. 36 applies to Jupiter as 3rd lord, and the text would weigh it against the 12th lordship. The engine also reports a Mars-Saturn exchange elsewhere in the chart (Saturn in the 11th, Mars in the 2nd), unrelated to this placement.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 3rd lord in the 12th house in 292, or 9.7%, the highest of the 3rd lord's twelve placements in the sample. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 12th lord in the 3rd house. The adjacent placements are the 3rd lord in the 11th and, round the circle, the 3rd lord in the 1st. The engine's flags are explained under Vimala Yoga, Harsha Yoga and Sarala Yoga. For the worked example's planet see Jupiter in the 12th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 3rd lord in the 12th house

What does BPHS say about the 3rd lord in the 12th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 36: spending on bad ends, a difficult father, and fortune through a woman. This page reports the critical clauses as the text's statements only.
Can the spending be on good causes?
BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 says so when a benefic occupies the 12th, or the 12th lord is with a benefic, in its own sign or exalted. A benefic 3rd lord in the 12th is itself such a benefic.
Is this a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
The engine flags one when the 3rd lord also owns the 6th, 8th or 12th: Aries and Libra rising (Harsha), Virgo and Pisces (Sarala), Cancer and Capricorn (Vimala).
Which Ascendants give the strongest planet here?
Cancer and Capricorn rising (own sign), and Scorpio and Aquarius rising (exalted Saturn and exalted Mars). Aries rising gives a debilitated Mercury.
Does it say something about my father?
Sl. 36 has a clause about the father that this page reports only as the text's statement. BPHS reads the father mainly from the 9th house, its lord and the Sun (Ch. 20), and this app does not forecast family matters.
How common is it?
292 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (9.7%) in the engine's sample.
