House lords

The 3rd lord placed in the 11th house: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 35 on gain through trade, the Ch. 22 rule for the 3rd-11th exchange, the double "evil-owner" link of Ch. 34, the 12-Ascendant table and an engine-computed Sagittarius-rising chart with Saturn exalted in Libra.

In short

The 3rd lord in the 11th house links the two upachaya houses of effort and gain: the ruler of courage and siblings sits in the house of income. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 35 reads it as constant gain through trade, intelligence without much formal learning, an adventurous temper and service to others. If the 11th lord is in the 3rd as well, BPHS Ch. 22 adds gain through siblings.

What the placement means

The 3rd house lord rules courage, effort, siblings and attendants. In the 11th house it sits in the house of income, gains and prosperity. The placement connects what a person does with what comes back to them, and BPHS reads it in commercial terms.

Both houses are upachayas, houses of growth through effort, and both appear on BPHS Ch. 34's list of houses whose owners "give evil effects". The 11th is also the 9th house counted from the 3rd, its house of fortune. BPHS does not cite that counting here, but the verse it gives is one of the more favourable in the 3rd-lord series.

The two houses involved

The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction and journeys in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4.

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) is all articles, the son's wife, income, prosperity and quadrupeds in Ch. 11 Sl. 12. The house pages develop both.

What BPHS says about the 3rd lord in the 11th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 35 says that with the 3rd lord in the 11th the native "will always gain in trading", will be "intelligent, although not literate", adventurous, and will serve others. bphs-alt.txt has the same words.

The verse puts effort and gain together in a trade: gain is the 11th's word, and "adventurous" and "serves others" carry the 3rd's valour and attendants. The qualification "although not literate" repeats a theme from Sl. 25 (the 3rd lord in the 1st, "devoid of learning"): Ch. 24 twice separates native intelligence from formal learning when the 3rd lord is involved. BPHS reads learning from the 5th house and the Chaturvimshamsa (Ch. 11 Sl. 6, Ch. 7), so this is one statement among several a reader would weigh.

The 11th-house chapter names this pair of lords directly. Ch. 22 Sl. 10 says that if the 11th lord is in the 3rd while the 3rd lord is in the 11th, "one will gain wealth through co-borns" and have excellent ornaments. That is the exchange case; the engine reports such an exchange as a Parivartana Yoga, and, since neither the 3rd nor the 11th is an angle or trine, frames it as favourable only when each planet's other sign happens to be an angle or trine, and as mixed otherwise.

Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 lists the 3rd lord's favourable conditions for siblings as an angle, a trine, exaltation or a friendly division; the 11th itself is not among them, but dignity can meet the rule. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 applies its caution twice here, to the planet's 3rd lordship and to the 11th lord, which for every Ascendant is a different planet, since no graha owns two signs that far apart. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 35 by strength. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, the 11th lord in the 3rd (Ch. 24 Sl. 123), reads: skilful in all work, wealthy, happy through siblings, with an occasional mention of gout as a classical bodily association, not a medical statement. Both directions are favourable and both are about earning; Sl. 123 adds siblings, which Sl. 35 omits and Ch. 22 Sl. 10 supplies for the exchange.

The 3rd lord and the 11th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

By sign this is one of the strongest tables in the 3rd-lord series. Two rows give exaltation: Gemini rising (the Sun in Aries) and Sagittarius rising (Saturn, lord of the 2nd and 3rd, in Libra). Seven give a friendly sign and two a neutral one. Virgo rising gives the one debilitation: Mars, lord of the 3rd and 8th, in Cancer. An exalted 3rd lord meets Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6's exaltation clause, so for Gemini and Sagittarius rising the sibling rule is satisfied as well.

The second lordships matter. For Sagittarius rising Saturn also owns the 2nd, so both of the houses BPHS ties to wealth (the 2nd and 11th) are touched: the 2nd lord sits in the 11th, which Ch. 24 Sl. 23 reads as "all kinds of wealth". For Leo and Aquarius rising the 3rd lord also owns the 10th; for Scorpio the 4th; for Aries and Libra the 6th; for Virgo and Pisces the 8th; for Cancer and Capricorn the 12th.

Each of those brings its own Ch. 24 verse for the 11th, which Sl. 145-148 asks to be read beside Sl. 35. In summary: Sl. 119 (the 10th lord in the 11th, for Leo and Aquarius rising) reads wealth, happiness, sons and truthfulness; Sl. 47 (the 4th lord, Scorpio) reads liberality and helpfulness, with a classical bodily association the text names; Sl. 71 (the 6th lord, Aries and Libra) reads gain through enemies and some loss of happiness from children; Sl. 95 (the 8th lord, Virgo and Pisces) splits on company, poor and unhappy in youth with a malefic, long-lived with a benefic; Sl. 143 (the 12th lord, Cancer and Capricorn) reads losses and being raised by others, with occasional gain through them. These are the text's statements, summarised; the spread shows that "the 3rd lord in the 11th" means quite different things across Ascendants.

Strength changes the reading

Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 35. Aspects on the 11th come from the 5th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 3rd and 7th, Mars from the 8th and 4th, and Saturn from the 9th and 2nd. Because both houses involve "evil-owner" lordships, BPHS's cancellation rule (contrary indications cancel) is likely to come into play more often here than in most placements.

Worked example: Sagittarius rising, Saturn exalted in Libra

The engine's deterministic search returned: 29 July 1985, 18:11 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Sagittarius 26.59. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Sagittarius rising makes Aquarius the 3rd, so Saturn is the 3rd lord; it also owns Capricorn, the 2nd.
  • Saturn is in Libra at 27.81 degrees, Vishakha pada 3: the 11th house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine marks it Exalted.
  • Ketu shares Libra at 20.40.
  • Mars, debilitated and combust in Cancer in the 8th, aspects the 11th by its 4th-house special aspect. The 11th lord, Venus, is in Gemini in the 7th, friendly.

This is the full-strength case of Sl. 145-148: an exalted 3rd lord, also the 2nd lord, in the house of gains, so Sl. 35 and Sl. 23 both apply to the same planet. Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6's exaltation clause for siblings is met. The 11th is aspected by Mars, a malefic and debilitated, and holds Ketu, which Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says gives results according to the lords it joins. The 11th lord is not in the 3rd, so Ch. 22 Sl. 10's exchange does not occur. The engine's yoga detector reports Vimala Yoga for Mars, the 12th lord here, sitting in the 8th.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 3rd lord in the 11th house in 191, or 6.4%, the lowest of the 3rd lord's twelve placements in the sample. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 11th lord in the 3rd house; exchanges are covered under Parivartana Yoga. The adjacent placements are the 3rd lord in the 10th and the 3rd lord in the 12th. For the worked example's planet see Saturn in the 11th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
