In short

The 11th lord in the 3rd house is the ruler of gains placed in the house of siblings, effort and courage. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 123 reads it as skilful in all work, wealthy and happy through siblings, with an occasional mention of gout. Both houses are upachayas, and by sign the table is favourable: eight rows are friendly signs and one is exalted.

What the placement means

"The 11th lord in the 3rd house" is the lord of gains, income and elder siblings standing in the house of younger siblings, initiative, courage and communication. The lord carries the 11th house's affairs into the 3rd.

Both houses are upachayas, houses the texts expect to grow with effort, and both are among the three houses whose lords Ch. 34 calls evil. Counted from the 11th, the 3rd is the 5th, a trine from the house of gains. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, friends and elder siblings.

The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) governs co-born siblings, valour and effort.

What BPHS says about the 11th lord in the 3rd

Ch. 24 Sl. 123: if the lord of Labh is in the Sahaj Bhava, the native "will be skilful in all jobs", wealthy, endowed with fraternal bliss, and "may sometimes incur gout pains". The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse puts the two sibling houses together (the 11th for elder siblings, the 3rd for younger) and reads the result as happiness through siblings. The health clause is the text's classical statement, reported here, and is not medical advice.

Sl. 145-148 scale it: full, half or a quarter by strength, with both lordships read for a planet owning two houses.

Two "evil" lordships, two houses of growth

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the owners of the 3rd, 6th and 11th give evil effects, in ascending order. The 11th lord in the 3rd therefore puts the chapter's most marked "evil" lord into the house of its least marked one. Ch. 24 reads the result favourably, which is the general pattern for the 11th lord in Ch. 24: the lordship is classed as difficult, while its placements are often good. Read in the neutral terms this app uses, the 3rd and the 11th are the houses of effort and its returns, and Sl. 123 joins them.

Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on this placement.

The 11th lord and the 3rd-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Taurus rising gives the one exalted row: Jupiter in Cancer, owning the 8th and 11th. Two rows are debilitated: Venus in Virgo for Cancer rising (Venus owns the 4th and 11th) and the Moon in Scorpio for Virgo rising. Eight rows are friendly signs and one, Scorpio rising (Mercury in Capricorn), is neutral. No row is an enemy sign. By sign this is one of the 11th lord's best-supported placements.

Second lordships across the table

The second-lordship column reads as a list of the chart's difficult houses. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 11th lord also owns the 8th; for Gemini and Sagittarius rising, the 6th; for Pisces rising, the 12th. Combined with the 3rd as the placement, those rows put two or three of Ch. 34's difficult categories in one planet. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the second house is the 4th, an angle; for Leo and Aquarius rising, the 2nd; for Aries rising, the 10th. The luminary rows, Virgo and Libra, have no second house. Sl. 145-148 say a planet owning two houses gives both results, so the dusthana rows add their own reading to Sl. 123.

The exalted and debilitated rows

Taurus rising is the strong case: Jupiter owns the 8th and the 11th and is exalted in Cancer, the 3rd. By Sl. 145-148 that gives Sl. 123 in full, while the 8th lordship, a dusthana, travels with it; the chapter says varied results both come to pass. From the 3rd, Jupiter's aspects fall on the 7th, the 9th and the 11th, so the exalted 11th lord also watches its own house.

Cancer rising is the weak case: Venus owns the 4th and the 11th and is debilitated in Virgo, the 3rd. Here the second lordship is an angle, the house of home and mother, and it shares the planet's weakness. Virgo rising puts the Moon, which rules only the 11th, debilitated in Scorpio; with no second house, dignity alone scales the verse. The two debilitated rows are therefore different in kind: one weakens an angle lordship as well, the other only the house of gains.

Counted from the 11th, the 3rd is the 5th, a trine relative to gains. BPHS does not draw on that in Sl. 123, and this page does not lean on it.

Strength changes the reading

After dignity, combustion and company decide. In the 3rd the 11th lord often travels with other planets, as the worked example shows, and their lordships colour the house.

From the 3rd, every graha aspects the 9th. A Mars 11th lord also aspects the 6th and the 10th; a Jupiter the 7th and the 11th, so a Jupiter 11th lord in the 3rd looks back at its own house; a Saturn the 5th and the 12th.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 3rd lord in the 11th (Sl. 35), reads as always gaining in trade, intelligent though not literate, adventurous and serving others. Both together are a parivartana between the two upachayas of effort and gain. The 11th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 122) gives all kinds of wealth and the 11th lord in the 4th (Sl. 124) gains from the mother's side and property.

Worked example: Sagittarius rising, Venus in Aquarius

The engine's deterministic search found: 15 February 1986, 03:45 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Sagittarius 8.1. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Sagittarius rising the 11th house is Libra, so the 11th lord is Venus, which also owns Taurus, the 6th.
  • The 3rd house is Aquarius. Venus is there at 8.6 degrees, Shatabhisha pada 1, "Friendly sign", and combust.
  • The Sun (2.27), Mercury (13.09, combust) and Jupiter (5.02, combust) share Aquarius: four planets in the 3rd.
  • The engine reports Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga links among Jupiter, the Sun and Mercury, and Vimala Yoga through Mars, the 12th lord, in its own 12th.

The 3rd here holds the Lagna lord (Jupiter, also the 4th lord), the 9th lord (the Sun), the 7th and 10th lord (Mercury) and the 11th lord (Venus). Three of the four are combust. Venus itself is a friendly-sign but combust 11th lord with a dusthana as its second house, a middle case for Sl. 123 on Sl. 145-148's scale. The engine's yogas in this chart come from the other planets in the 3rd, not from Venus, whose lordships (6th and 11th) are neither Kendra nor Kona.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 11th lord in the 3rd house in 230, or 7.7%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 11th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the third sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its dignity, combustion and second lordship.
  4. Note the other planets in the 3rd.

Questions about the 11th lord in the 3rd

What does BPHS say about the 11th lord in the 3rd house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 123: skilful in all work, wealthy, happy through siblings, with occasional gout. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength. The health clause is reported as the text's claim, not medical advice.
Does it mean income through one's own efforts or siblings?
The verse names skill, wealth and sibling happiness without linking them causally. This app does not forecast income from a placement.
Both the 3rd and 11th lords are "evil" in Ch. 34. Is this a bad placement?
Ch. 34 classifies lordships; Ch. 24 reads this placement favourably. BPHS keeps both, and Sl. 145-148 scale the Ch. 24 result by strength.
Which Ascendants give the strongest version?
By sign, Taurus rising (Jupiter exalted in Cancer). Cancer and Virgo rising put the 11th lord debilitated.
Does a Jupiter 11th lord in the 3rd aspect the 11th?
Yes. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from itself, and the 11th is the 9th from the 3rd. That applies for Taurus rising (Jupiter exalted in Cancer) and Aquarius rising (Jupiter in Aries).
What does the reverse placement say?
The 3rd lord in the 11th (BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 35) reads as always gaining in trade, intelligent though not literate, adventurous and serving others. If both placements occur, the two lords have exchanged signs, which the engine reports as a Parivartana Yoga.
How common is it?
It occurred in 230 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.7%.
