House lords

The lord of the 11th house placed in the 2nd: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 122, the 2nd-11th link between the two wealth houses, the planet for all 12 Ascendants and an engine-computed Capricorn chart with a 2nd-11th exchange.

In short

The 11th lord in the 2nd house is the ruler of gains and income placed in the house of family, speech and stored wealth. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 122 reads it as endowed with all kinds of wealth and accomplishments, charitable, religious and always happy. It joins the two houses most associated with money, and for Leo and Aquarius rising the 11th lord is in its own sign there.

What the placement means

"The 11th lord in the 2nd house" is the lord of gains, income and fulfilled aims standing in the house of family, speech, food and accumulated wealth. The house of income carries its affairs into the house of savings.

Counted from the 11th, the 2nd is the 4th, an angle from the house of gains. Both houses are wealth houses in the ordinary reading: the 11th for what comes in, the 2nd for what is kept. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) governs gains, income, friends and elder siblings.

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) governs family, speech and stored wealth.

What BPHS says about the 11th lord in the 2nd

Ch. 24 Sl. 122: if the lord of Labh is in the Dhan Bhava, the native "will be endowed with all kinds of wealth and all kinds of accomplishments", charitable, religious and always happy. The bphs-alt text agrees. "All kinds" appears twice, and the verse is one of the most expansive in the 11th lord's set; it pairs the wealth with charity and religion, as Sl. 110 does for the 10th lord in the same house.

Sl. 145-148 scale it: full, half or a quarter by strength, both lordships read for a planet owning two houses.

The two wealth houses together

BPHS has no single verse that names the 2nd and 11th lords as a pair, and this app's Dhan Yoga tests follow the specific sign combinations of Ch. 41 Sl. 2-15 rather than any lordship rule. The modern Dhana Yoga idea of linking the 2nd and 11th lords is therefore not something the engine flags by name. What the engine does report is the exchange: when the 11th lord is in the 2nd and the 2nd lord in the 11th, a Parivartana Yoga appears, and the worked example below is exactly that case.

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 list the 11th lord among the evil lordships, a classification of the planet by ownership. Ch. 39 Sl. 29-31 include the 2nd and 11th among the houses whose lords, aspecting the Lagna while Venus aspects the 11th, give a kingly combination; from the 2nd, no graha's aspect reaches the Lagna (the 7th falls on the 8th, Saturn's 3rd and 10th on the 4th and 11th, Jupiter's 5th and 9th on the 6th and 10th, Mars's 4th and 8th on the 5th and 9th), so that combination is not formed by this placement alone. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 11th lord in the 2nd.

The 11th lord and the 2nd-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Leo and Aquarius rising are the strong rows: the 11th lord also owns the 2nd, so Mercury in Virgo (exalted, moolatrikona or own sign by degree) and Jupiter in Pisces are in their own signs. Two rows are debilitated: Mars in Cancer for Gemini rising (Mars owns the 6th and 11th) and Saturn in Aries for Pisces rising (Saturn owns the 11th and 12th). Two are enemy signs: Jupiter in Gemini (Taurus) and Venus in Leo (Cancer).

When the 11th lord is also the 2nd lord

For Leo and Aquarius rising one planet owns both wealth houses: Mercury for Leo (Gemini and Virgo), Jupiter for Aquarius (Sagittarius and Pisces). With that planet in the 2nd, Sl. 122 and the 2nd lord's own verse for its own house (Sl. 14: wealthy, proud, with two or more spouses and without children) both apply, and Sl. 145-148 say varied results both come to pass while contrary ones cancel. For Leo rising, Ch. 34's classification makes Mercury the owner of one neutral and one evil house; for Aquarius rising, Jupiter likewise. The verse is generous; the lordship classification is cautious.

The weak rows

Gemini rising puts Mars, owner of the 6th and 11th, debilitated in Cancer: two of Ch. 34's evil lordships in one planet, at its weakest, in the house of stored wealth. Pisces rising puts Saturn, owner of the 11th and 12th, debilitated in Aries: the lords of gain and of loss together in one weak planet. In both rows the verse is generous and the planet carrying it is weak, so Sl. 145-148 would give a quarter of it, with a dusthana lordship travelling alongside. Taurus rising (Jupiter, 8th and 11th, in Gemini) and Cancer rising (Venus, 4th and 11th, in Leo) are enemy-sign rows; for Cancer the second lordship is an angle, which is the better of the two.

Counted from the 11th, the 2nd is the 4th, an angle relative to the house of gains. BPHS does not use that derived count in Sl. 122. It is mentioned because readers often meet derived-house arguments for this placement, and they are not the text's own reasoning.

Strength changes the reading

After dignity, look at the second lordship. For Taurus and Scorpio rising it is the 8th; for Gemini and Sagittarius, the 6th; for Pisces, the 12th: a dusthana each time. For Cancer and Capricorn rising it is the 4th, an angle; for Aries, the 10th. Combustion and company come next.

From the 2nd, every graha aspects the 8th. A Mars 11th lord also aspects the 5th and the 9th; a Jupiter the 6th and the 10th; a Saturn the 4th and the 11th, so a Saturn 11th lord in the 2nd looks back at its own house.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 2nd lord in the 11th (Sl. 23), reads as all kinds of wealth, ever diligent, honourable and famous. The two verses are among the most closely matched pairs in the chapter. The 11th lord in the 1st (Sl. 121) is about the person and the 11th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 123) about skill and siblings.

Worked example: Capricorn rising, Mars in Aquarius

The engine's deterministic search found: 10 January 1985, 08:37 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Capricorn 17.6. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Capricorn rising the 11th house is Scorpio, so the 11th lord is Mars, which also owns Aries, the 4th.
  • The 2nd house is Aquarius. Mars is there at 18.47 degrees, Shatabhisha pada 4, "Friendly sign"; not retrograde, not combust.
  • Venus, the Capricorn yogakaraka (5th and 10th), shares Aquarius at 12.8.
  • Saturn, the Lagna lord and also the 2nd lord, is in Scorpio, the 11th. Mars and Saturn have exchanged signs, and the engine reports a Parivarthana Yoga.

This chart shows the 2nd-11th exchange directly: the 11th lord in the 2nd, the 2nd lord in the 11th, and the 2nd lord here is also the Lagna lord. The engine also reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for Mars and Venus together in the 2nd: Mars owns the 4th, an angle, and Venus the 5th, a trine. On Sl. 145-148's scale a friendly-sign Mars is a good case for Sl. 122. In the same chart the 12th house holds the Sun, Mercury and Jupiter, and the engine reports Harsha, Sarala and Vimala yogas there, which are separate rules from this placement.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 11th lord in the 2nd house in 248, or 8.3%. That counts moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 11th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the second sign in your birth chart.
  3. Find the 2nd lord: if it is in the 11th, the two have exchanged signs.
  4. Run the yoga calculator for the exchange and any Kendra-Kona link.
