House lords

The 2nd lord placed in the 11th house: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 23, the Ch. 13 and Ch. 22 rules on the 2nd-11th exchange, the 12-Ascendant table, and an engine-computed Capricorn-rising chart in which the 2nd and 11th lords have exchanged signs.

In short

The 2nd lord in the 11th house joins the two houses BPHS ties most closely to money: accumulated wealth and income. Ch. 24 Sl. 23 reads it as all kinds of wealth, diligence, honour and fame, with no faults listed. When the 11th lord also sits in the 2nd, Ch. 13 and Ch. 22 add that wealth is acquired or amassed, and the engine reports the exchange as Parivartana Yoga.

What the placement means

The 2nd house lord rules what is held: savings, family wealth, food, speech. The 11th rules what comes in: income, gains, prosperity. When the lord of the first sits in the second, the two money houses of the chart are joined through one planet. It is the most direct wealth connection a 2nd lord can make.

The 11th is an upachaya, not an angle or trine, so the main wealth rule of BPHS Ch. 13 (2nd lord in the 2nd, an angle or a trine) does not name it. BPHS covers it instead with a specific rule about the 2nd and 11th lords, and Ch. 24's own verse is wholly favourable.

The two houses involved

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3.

The 11th house (Labha Bhava) is all articles, the son's wife, income, prosperity and quadrupeds in Ch. 11 Sl. 12. The house pages cover both.

What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 11th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 23 says that with the 2nd lord in the 11th the native "will have all kinds of wealth, be ever diligent, honourable and famous". bphs-alt.txt has the same words. It is one of the few verses in the 2nd-lord series with no limiting clause at all.

"All kinds of wealth" is the 2nd house's theme; "ever diligent" suggests the 11th as a house of continuing gain through effort; honour and fame are general. The verse carries no condition, but Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 still applies: full, half or quarter results by strength, both lordships read together.

The 2nd-house chapter treats the 2nd and 11th lords as a pair. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 4 says: "If Dhan Lord is in Labh, while the Lord of Labh in Dhan, wealth will be acquired", and adds that the two lords joined in an angle or trine also give wealth. Ch. 22 Sl. 9, in the 11th-house chapter, repeats the exchange and says one "will amass abundant fortunes after marriage". The negative counterparts are in Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7: the two lords both in evil houses with a malefic in the 2nd, or both combust or with malefics, point to penury. In other words, BPHS reads these two lords together almost everywhere it discusses wealth.

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the owner of the 11th gives evil effects. That is about owning the 11th, and it concerns the 11th lord, not the 2nd lord sitting in the 11th. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, Ch. 24 Sl. 122 (the 11th lord in the 2nd), reads: all kinds of wealth and accomplishments, charitable, religious, always happy. The two verses are almost mirror images, both opening with "all kinds of wealth". Together they are the exchange that Ch. 13 Sl. 4 and Ch. 22 Sl. 9 name, so BPHS reads this pair favourably from each side and again as an exchange.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 2nd lord in the 11th sign:

PiscesMars9th (Scorpio)CapricornExalted
The 2nd lord and the 11th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

Leo and Aquarius rising are a special pair: one planet owns both the 2nd and the 11th (Mercury for Leo, Jupiter for Aquarius), so the 2nd lord in the 11th is in its own sign. Two rows give exaltation: Sagittarius rising (Saturn in Libra) and Pisces rising (Mars in Capricorn). Taurus rising gives the one debilitation, Mercury in Pisces. Four rows are enemy signs (Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn), two friendly and one neutral.

For Leo and Aquarius rising the Ch. 13 Sl. 4 exchange cannot happen, because there is only one planet; the placement is instead a single lord of both money houses sitting in one of them. For Capricorn rising the 2nd lord is Saturn, also the Lagna lord, so Ch. 24 Sl. 11 (the Lagna lord in the 11th: gains, good qualities, fame) applies to the same planet.

Strength changes the reading

Because the reading is so favourable, the conditions that would reduce it are those Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 names: combustion or malefic company affecting both money lords. Dignity scales the rest through Sl. 145-148. Aspects on the 11th come from the 5th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 3rd and 7th, Mars from the 8th and 4th, and Saturn from the 9th and 2nd.

Worked example: Capricorn rising, the 2nd and 11th lords exchanged

The engine's deterministic search returned: 10 January 1985, 08:37 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Capricorn 17.6. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Capricorn rising makes Aquarius the 2nd, so Saturn is the 2nd lord; it is also the Lagna lord.
  • Saturn is in Scorpio at 1.91 degrees, Vishakha pada 4: the 11th house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine gives "Neutral". Ketu is in Scorpio at 1.02.
  • The 11th lord is Mars, owner of Scorpio. Mars is in Aquarius at 18.47, in the 2nd, with Venus, in a friendly sign.
  • So the 2nd lord is in the 11th and the 11th lord in the 2nd. The engine flags the sign exchange as Parivartana Yoga.

This is the exact configuration of Ch. 13 Sl. 4 ("wealth will be acquired") and Ch. 22 Sl. 9 ("abundant fortunes after marriage"), on top of Sl. 23. Saturn is neutral and Mars friendly, so neither lord is at the weak end of Sl. 145-148's scale; neither is combust, so Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7's penury condition does not apply. Ketu sits within a degree of Saturn, and Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says a node gives results according to the lords it joins. As with every chart on these pages, this is the text's rule applied to the engine's positions, not a forecast about anyone's money or marriage.

The aspects in this chart add a detail the verses do not cover. Under the engine's rule Saturn in the 11th aspects the 1st by its 3rd-house special aspect, the 5th by the seventh-house aspect and the 8th by its 10th-house aspect. Because Saturn is the Lagna lord here, that means the Lagna lord looks at its own house, which BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 counts in a house's favour (it lists "not drishtied by its Lord" among the signs of a house's decline). Mars in the 2nd aspects the 5th, 8th and 9th. Neither lord aspects the other's house, and nothing other than the nodes aspects the 11th itself. These facts are the engine's; what they weigh in a reading is left to the classical rules quoted above.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 11th house in 266, or 8.9%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 11th lord in the 2nd house; exchanges in general are covered under Parivartana Yoga and dhana yoga. The adjacent placements are the 2nd lord in the 10th and the 2nd lord in the 12th. For the worked example's planet see Saturn in the 11th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
