House lords

The 2nd lord placed in the 12th house: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 24, the Ch. 13 rule on a 2nd lord in a dusthana, the Ch. 23 rules on what kind of spending, the 12-Ascendant table and an engine-computed Pisces-rising chart with Mars and Venus in Aquarius.

In short

The 2nd lord in the 12th house moves the ruler of wealth and family into the house of expenditure and loss. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 24 reads it as adventurous but without wealth, interested in others' money, and not made happy by the eldest child. Ch. 13 agrees that a 2nd lord in the 12th weakens finances, while Ch. 23 distinguishes spending on good causes from spending on bad ones by the planets involved.

What the placement means

The 2nd house lord rules accumulated wealth, family and speech. In the 12th house it sits in the house of expenditure. The meaning is almost literal: the planet of what is kept stands in the house of what goes out.

The 12th is a dusthana, the last of the three houses where BPHS Ch. 13 expects a 2nd lord to weaken finances. It is also the sign immediately before the Lagna, and the 2nd and 12th flank the Ascendant on either side, so the placement moves the wealth lord from one side of the person to the other.

The two houses involved

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3.

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) is expenses, the history of enemies and one's own death in Ch. 11 Sl. 13; Ch. 23 develops it. The house pages cover both.

What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 12th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 24 says that with the 2nd lord in the 12th the native "will be adventurous, be devoid of wealth and be interested in other's wealth", and that his eldest child will not keep him happy. bphs-alt.txt has the same text.

The verse reads the placement as wealth turned outward: what should be held is not, and attention turns to what others hold. "Adventurous" is the one neutral-to-positive word. The line about the eldest child is reported as the text's statement and not as a forecast about any family. Like almost every verse in the chapter it is also subject to Sl. 145-148: results come in proportion to strength, and both of the planet's lordships are read.

BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 agrees on direction: a 2nd lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th means "financial conditions will decline". Sl. 12 associates a 2nd lord in those houses with trouble of the eyes, a classical association reported without medical meaning. Sl. 6-7 sharpens the warning when the 11th lord is also in an evil house and a malefic occupies the 2nd.

The 12th-house chapter then asks what the money is spent on. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 says there will be "expenses on good accounts" if the 12th lord is with a benefic, in its own house or exalted, or if a benefic occupies the 12th. Ch. 13 Sl. 9 gives a related combination: Jupiter in the 11th, Venus in the 2nd, a benefic in the 12th and the 2nd lord joined with a benefic produce expenses on religious or charitable grounds. Ch. 23 Sl. 13 is the opposite case: Saturn or Mars in the 12th without a benefic aspect means earnings through questionable means. So BPHS does not stop at "loss"; it reads the kind of outflow from the planets involved. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, Ch. 24 Sl. 134 (the 12th lord in the 2nd), is less severe: spending on inauspicious things, but also religious, sweet in speech, with virtues and happiness. The 12th lord brings expense into the house of wealth and speech, and the verse finds a gain in speech; the 2nd lord carried into the 12th, by contrast, is read almost wholly as depletion. If both occur, the two lords have exchanged signs, which the engine reports as Parivartana Yoga. Its framing depends on the other houses the two planets own: favourable if each also owns an angle or trine, mixed if either does not.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 2nd lord in the 12th sign:

The 2nd lord and the 12th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

Two rows give exaltation: Aries rising (Venus, lord of the 2nd and 7th, in Pisces) and Gemini rising (the Moon in Taurus). For Aries rising the exalted Venus in the 12th is also a benefic occupying the 12th, the Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 condition for spending on good accounts. Aquarius rising gives the one debilitation: Jupiter, lord of both the 2nd and the 11th, in Capricorn, so both money lordships sit debilitated in the house of expense. Five rows are enemy signs and four neutral.

The second lordships matter here. For Virgo and Pisces rising the 2nd lord also owns the 9th, so a trine lordship goes into the 12th with it; for Taurus and Scorpio the 5th; for Aries and Libra the 7th; for Leo and Aquarius the 11th; for Sagittarius the 3rd; and for Capricorn rising Saturn is also the Lagna lord, which brings Ch. 24 Sl. 12 (the Lagna lord in the 12th) into play.

Strength changes the reading

Three checks follow from the texts. First, company in the 12th: a benefic there is Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4's condition for good expenditure, and Saturn or Mars without a benefic aspect is Sl. 13's condition for the opposite. Second, the 11th lord's position, for Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7. Third, dignity and combustion, which scale the result through Sl. 145-148. Aspects on the 12th come from the 6th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 4th and 8th, Mars from the 9th and 5th, and Saturn from the 10th and 3rd.

Worked example: Pisces rising, Mars and Venus in Aquarius

The engine's deterministic search returned: 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Pisces 23.04. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Pisces rising makes Aries the 2nd, so Mars is the 2nd lord; it also owns Scorpio, the 9th.
  • Mars is in Aquarius at 25.40 degrees, Purva Bhadrapada pada 2: the 12th house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine gives "Friendly sign" in this chart (Neutral by sign alone).
  • Venus is also in Aquarius, at 22.47, about three degrees from Mars.
  • Saturn owns both the 11th (Capricorn) and the 12th (Aquarius) for Pisces rising; it is in Scorpio in the 9th. Jupiter, the Lagna lord, is debilitated and combust in Capricorn in the 11th. Nothing other than the nodes aspects the 12th.

Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2's decline applies by house. But the chart also meets one of Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4's conditions: Venus, a natural benefic, occupies the 12th. Mars in the 12th without a benefic aspect is Ch. 23 Sl. 13's case, and here the benefic is a conjunction rather than an aspect, a distinction the text draws in its wording. Mars carries the 9th lordship into the 12th as well. The 11th lord, Saturn, is in a trine, not an evil house, so Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7's fuller condition is not met. BPHS gives several partial readings; it does not give one verdict. Two engine flags complete the picture. Mars sits in Aquarius, Saturn's sign, while Saturn sits in Scorpio, Mars's, so the 2nd/9th lord and the 11th/12th lord have exchanged signs; the engine reports Parivartana Yoga and frames it as mixed, because Saturn owns no angle or trine here. And Venus, the 8th lord for Pisces rising, is in the 12th, which the engine reports as Sarala Yoga.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 12th house in 273, or 9.1%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 12th lord in the 2nd house. The adjacent placements are the 2nd lord in the 11th and, round the circle, the 2nd lord in the 1st. The other dusthana cases are the 6th and the 8th. For the worked example's planet see Mars in the 12th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 2nd lord in the 12th house

What does BPHS say about the 2nd lord in the 12th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 24: adventurous, without wealth, interested in others' wealth, and not made happy by the eldest child. Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 also expects finances to decline.
Does it mean I will lose money?
BPHS reads the placement as outflow, and Ch. 23 distinguishes good spending from bad by the planets involved. These are classical rules about positions; this app does not forecast finances.
Can the spending be on good causes?
BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 says expenses will be on good accounts if a benefic occupies the 12th, or if the 12th lord is with a benefic, in its own sign or exalted.
Which Ascendants give the strongest planet here?
Aries rising (Venus exalted in Pisces) and Gemini rising (the Moon exalted in Taurus). Aquarius rising gives the weakest, Jupiter debilitated.
What if the 12th lord is in the 2nd at the same time?
Then the 2nd and 12th lords have exchanged signs. The engine reports a Parivartana Yoga, framed as favourable only when each planet also owns an angle or trine, and as mixed otherwise. Ch. 24 reads each half by its own verse, Sl. 24 and Sl. 134.
How common is it?
273 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (9.1%) in the engine's sample.
