In short

The 12th lord in the 2nd house is the ruler of expenditure placed in the house of family, speech and stored wealth. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 134 reads it as always spending on inauspicious deeds, yet religious, sweet-spoken, virtuous and happy. By sign the table is weak: three enemy-sign rows and two debilitated, against one exalted row (Sagittarius rising).

What the placement means

"The 12th lord in the 2nd house" is the lord of expenditure, loss and distant places standing in the house of family, speech, food and stored wealth. The house of outflow carries its affairs into the house of savings.

The 12th is a dusthana. Counted from the 12th, the 2nd is the 3rd. The 2nd is also the 12th counted from the 3rd, and the 2nd and 12th flank the Ascendant on either side. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) governs expenditure, losses, distant places and release.

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) governs family, speech, food and stored wealth.

What BPHS says about the 12th lord in the 2nd

Ch. 24 Sl. 134: if the lord of Vyaya is in the Dhan Bhava, the native "will always spend on inauspicious deeds", will be religious, will speak sweetly, and will be endowed with virtues and happiness. The bphs-alt text agrees. It is a mixed verse: one clause about spending, which is the 12th house's matter carried into the house of money, and four favourable clauses, three of them 2nd-house qualities (speech, family virtue, contentment). This page reports the spending clause as the text's claim.

Sl. 145-148 scale the verse: full, half or a quarter by strength, with both lordships read for a planet owning two houses. In a mixed verse, strength scales the favourable clauses as much as the unfavourable one.

How BPHS reads a 12th lord

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 leave the 12th lord open: its effects "will depend on their association". In the 2nd, the associations are the planets that share the house of wealth and the 2nd lord's own state. Ch. 39 Sl. 20 and 28 add that a 12th lord in fall, an inimical sign or combustion contributes to a Raj Yoga when the Lagna conditions are met; the table below has two debilitated and three enemy-sign rows, so those rules are often in play for this placement, though the engine does not test them. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 12th lord in the 2nd.

Sagittarius rising is the one exalted row: Mars, owner of the 5th and 12th, exalted in Capricorn. Two rows are debilitated: the Sun in Libra for Virgo rising and Saturn in Aries for Pisces rising (Saturn owns the 11th and 12th). Three are enemy signs: Jupiter in Taurus (Aries rising, where Jupiter also owns the 9th), Mars in Gemini (Taurus rising) and Venus in Cancer (Gemini rising, where Venus also owns the 5th). Cancer and Leo rising give friendly signs.

Trine lords among the 12th lords

Four Ascendants have a 12th lord that also owns a trine: Aries and Libra rising (the 9th: Jupiter, Mercury) and Gemini and Sagittarius rising (the 5th: Venus, Mars). In the 2nd those four planets stand in Taurus (enemy), Scorpio (neutral), Cancer (enemy) and Capricorn (exalted) respectively. Only Sagittarius rising pairs a trine lordship with real strength; for the others the trine lordship arrives weakened. Sl. 145-148's two-lordship rule means each of those trine lordships still adds its own Ch. 24 verse for the 2nd (Sl. 98 for the 9th lord, Sl. 50 for the 5th lord), both favourable, alongside Sl. 134.

The weak rows

Virgo rising puts the Sun, which owns only the 12th, debilitated in Libra: a luminary with no second house, so Sl. 134 is scaled by dignity alone and comes through at about a quarter. Pisces rising puts Saturn, owner of the 11th and 12th, debilitated in Aries, so the lords of gain and of loss are weak together in the house of wealth; Sl. 122, the 11th lord's favourable verse for the 2nd, and Sl. 134 then both apply at a reduced share. Taurus rising is the worked example below: Mars, owner of the 7th and 12th, in Gemini, an enemy sign.

Counted from the 12th, the 2nd is the 3rd, the house of effort relative to loss. BPHS does not use that derived count in Sl. 134. What the verse does show is BPHS's habit of reading a lord through its destination: the spending is the 12th's, the sweet speech and family virtue are the 2nd's.

Strength changes the reading

After dignity, company decides most for a 12th lord. Combustion weakens it; in the worked example, it is both combust and in an enemy sign.

From the 2nd, every graha aspects the 8th. A Mars 12th lord also aspects the 5th and the 9th; a Jupiter the 6th and the 10th; a Saturn the 4th and the 11th.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 2nd lord in the 12th (Sl. 24), reads as adventurous, devoid of wealth and interested in others' wealth, with an eldest child who does not keep the native happy. Both together are a parivartana between the two houses that flank the Ascendant. The 12th lord in the 1st (Sl. 133) is about the self and the 12th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 135) about siblings.

Worked example: Taurus rising, Mars in Gemini

The engine's deterministic search found: 14 June 1985, 05:06 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Taurus 24.15. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Taurus rising the 12th house is Aries and the 12th lord is Mars, which also owns Scorpio, the 7th.
  • The 2nd house is Gemini. Mars is there at 9.39 degrees, Ardra pada 1, "Enemy sign", and combust.
  • Mercury, the 2nd and 5th lord, is in its own Gemini at 7.03, also combust: the 2nd lord at home beside the 12th lord.
  • The engine reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for Mars (the 7th lord) and Mercury (the 5th lord) together, and Harsha Yoga through Venus, the 6th lord, in the 12th.

On Sl. 145-148's scale an enemy-sign, combust Mars is the weak case of Sl. 134, which reduces the spending clause and the favourable clauses alike. The 2nd house itself is strong in a different way: its own lord is at home. The engine's Kendra-Kona link counts Mars as the 7th lord, a Kendra, and Mercury as the 5th lord, a trine; BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 15 would discount a link in which one planet also owns an evil house, and Mars here owns the 12th, which Ch. 34 leaves to association rather than calling evil outright.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 12th lord in the 2nd house in 272, or 9.1%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 12th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the second sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its dignity, combustion and second lordship.
  4. Note the 2nd lord's position and any planets with the 12th lord.

Questions about the 12th lord in the 2nd

What does BPHS say about the 12th lord in the 2nd house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 134: always spending on inauspicious deeds, yet religious, sweet-spoken, virtuous and happy. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength.
Does it mean losing savings?
The verse names spending as a classical tendency alongside favourable qualities. This app does not forecast finances from a placement.
Which Ascendants give the strongest and weakest versions?
By sign, Sagittarius rising is strongest (Mars exalted in Capricorn). Virgo (the Sun in Libra) and Pisces (Saturn in Aries) put it debilitated.
Is a weak 12th lord good?
BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 20 and 28 count a weak 6th, 8th or 12th lord as part of a Raj Yoga under conditions on the Lagna. The engine does not test those verses.
What does the reverse placement say?
The 2nd lord in the 12th (Sl. 24): adventurous, without wealth, interested in others' wealth, with an eldest child who does not keep the native happy.
Does the 12th lord in the 2nd aspect the 8th?
Yes. The 8th is the 7th house from the 2nd. A Mars 12th lord also aspects the 5th and 9th, a Jupiter the 6th and 10th, a Saturn the 4th and 11th.
How does BPHS classify the 12th lord?
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 do not call the 12th lord evil outright, as they do the 3rd, 6th and 11th lords. They say the effects of the 12th and 8th lords depend on their association, so the planets joined with it matter.
How common is it?
It occurred in 272 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.1%.
