House lords

The lord of the 12th house placed in the 1st: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 133, the penury rule of Ch. 42 Sl. 2 and the Raj Yoga rules of Ch. 39 for weak dusthana lords, the planet for all 12 Ascendants and an engine-computed Capricorn chart.

In short

The 12th lord in the 1st house is the ruler of expenditure, loss and distant places placed in the Ascendant. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 133 reads it as a spendthrift with a weak constitution, phlegmatic complaints and little wealth or learning, the text's claim and not a forecast. Ch. 34 says the 12th lord's effects depend on its associations, and for Aquarius rising it is the Lagna lord itself.

What the placement means

"The 12th lord in the 1st house" is the lord of expenditure, loss, foreign or distant places, sleep and release, standing in the Ascendant, the house of the body and the self. The lord brings the 12th house's affairs to the person directly.

The 12th is a dusthana; the 1st is both an angle and a trine. Counted from the 12th, the 1st is the 2nd, the next sign along. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses), so the placement depends on a known birth time; see when the birth time is unknown.

The two houses involved

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) governs expenditure, losses, distant places, sleep and release.

The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body, temperament and self.

What BPHS says about the 12th lord in the 1st

Ch. 24 Sl. 133 opens the 12th lord's set: if the lord of Vyaya is in the Tanu Bhava, the native "will be a spendthrift", weak in constitution, will suffer from phlegmatic disorders, and will be devoid of wealth and learning. The bphs-alt text agrees. Each clause is the 12th house's outflow applied to the self: money spent, strength spent, learning not kept. This page reports it as the text's claim about a configuration; the health clauses are classical statements and not medical advice.

Sl. 145-148 qualify it: the result is full, half or a quarter according to strength, and a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, contrary results cancelling. For this placement that second rule matters a great deal, because for most Ascendants the 12th lord also owns a trine or an angle, or is the Lagna lord itself.

Association decides the 12th lord

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say that "the effects, due to the Lords of Vyaya and Randhr Bhava, will depend on their association". Unlike the 3rd, 6th and 11th lords, which the chapter calls evil outright, the 12th lord is left open: its company decides. In the Lagna, its company is everything else in the 1st, and its second lordship.

Two other passages bear on it. Ch. 42 Sl. 2 lists, among combinations for penury, the Lagna lord in the 12th and the 12th lord in the Lagna, with a maraka (2nd or 7th) lord joining or aspecting; that is this placement plus its reverse plus a third condition, not this placement alone. Ch. 39 Sl. 20 and 28 run the other way: when the 6th, 8th or 12th lord is debilitated, in an inimical sign or combust, and the Lagna lord is strong and aspects the Lagna (Sl. 20), or the debilitated dusthana lord itself aspects the Lagna (Sl. 28), BPHS calls it a Raj Yoga. A weak 12th lord, in BPHS's own scheme, is not simply bad. The engine tests none of these three rules. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 12th lord in the 1st.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's table. Because the 1st house is the rising sign, the third column repeats the Ascendant. Dignity is sign-level from natural relationships (a real chart can shift the tier).

The 12th lord and the 1st-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Aquarius rising is the special row: Saturn owns both the 1st and the 12th, so the 12th lord in the Lagna is the Lagna lord in its own sign (moolatrikona by degree). Capricorn rising puts Jupiter debilitated in the Lagna; Jupiter there owns the 3rd and 12th. Cancer rising puts Mercury, owner of the 3rd and 12th, in an enemy sign. Five rows are friendly signs. Several rows carry a strong second lordship: Jupiter for Aries rising and Mercury for Libra rising also own the 9th; Venus for Gemini and Mars for Sagittarius also own the 5th; Mars for Taurus and Venus for Scorpio also own the 7th.

Weak rows and the Raj Yoga rules

Capricorn rising illustrates the tension in BPHS's treatment. By Sl. 145-148 a debilitated 12th lord gives a quarter of Sl. 133, which reduces an unfavourable verse; by Ch. 39 Sl. 28, a debilitated 12th lord that aspects the Lagna is part of a Raj Yoga. A planet in the Lagna occupies it rather than aspecting it, so Sl. 28 does not apply as written, but its logic, that a weak lord of loss is a good thing, runs in the same direction as the strength scale. Ch. 39 Sl. 20 needs the Lagna lord strong and aspecting the Lagna as well.

Strength changes the reading

Because Sl. 133 is unfavourable, a strong 12th lord gives it more fully under Sl. 145-148, and what offsets it is the second lordship. For Aries and Libra rising that is the 9th, for Gemini and Sagittarius the 5th: the 12th lord is then also a trine lord in the Lagna. Dignity, combustion and company all count.

From the 1st, every graha aspects the 7th. A Mars 12th lord also aspects the 4th and the 8th; a Jupiter the 5th and the 9th; a Saturn the 3rd and the 10th.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the Lagna lord in the 12th (Sl. 12), reads as lacking physical happiness, spending unfruitfully and quick to anger, when without benefic aspect or company. Together they are a parivartana and the first two conditions of Ch. 42 Sl. 2. The 12th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 134) mixes spending with sweet speech and virtue; the 12th lord in the 12th (Sl. 144) speaks only of expenditure.

Worked example: Capricorn rising, Jupiter in the Lagna

The engine's deterministic search found: 26 May 1985, 23:52 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Capricorn 21.73. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Capricorn rising the 12th house is Sagittarius and the 12th lord is Jupiter, which also owns Pisces, the 3rd.
  • Jupiter is in Capricorn at 23.22 degrees, Shravana pada 4, in the 1st, "Debilitated"; not retrograde, not combust.
  • The Lagna lord Saturn is in Scorpio, the 11th, retrograde, "Enemy sign".
  • The engine reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for Mars and Saturn in mutual aspect: Mars (4th and 11th lord) in Taurus, the 5th, and Saturn (1st and 2nd lord) in the 11th.

This is the debilitated row in practice. On Sl. 145-148's scale Sl. 133 would come through at about a quarter. Jupiter from the Lagna aspects the 7th, the 5th and the 9th, the two trines among them, so the weak 12th lord still looks at the houses of children and fortune. Ch. 42 Sl. 2 does not complete: the Lagna lord Saturn is in the 11th, not the 12th. The engine's yoga in this chart comes from Mars and Saturn, not from Jupiter.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 12th lord in the 1st house in 255, or 8.5%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your rising sign with the Lagna calculator and the 12th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the rising sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its dignity and second lordship (a trine for four Ascendants, the Lagna itself for Aquarius).
  4. Note the planets with it, since BPHS reads the 12th lord by its associations.

Questions about the 12th lord in the 1st

What does BPHS say about the 12th lord in the 1st house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 133: a spendthrift, weak in constitution, with phlegmatic complaints and little wealth or learning. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength and by the other lordship. It is the text's claim, not a forecast or medical advice.
Is the 12th lord always bad?
No. BPHS Ch. 34 says the 12th lord's effects depend on its associations, and Ch. 39 Sl. 20 and 28 count a weak 12th lord as part of a Raj Yoga under conditions.
What about Aquarius rising?
Saturn owns the 1st and 12th, so the 12th lord in the Lagna is the Lagna lord at home in its own sign. Sl. 145-148's two-lordship rule then applies, and Ch. 34 Sl. 7 lets the Lagna, the more significant house, lead.
Is this the penury yoga of Ch. 42?
Not by itself. Ch. 42 Sl. 2 also needs the Lagna lord in the 12th and a maraka lord joined with or aspecting the 12th lord. The engine does not test it.
What does the reverse placement say?
The Lagna lord in the 12th (Sl. 12): without benefic aspect or company, lacking physical happiness, spending unfruitfully and quick to anger. Both together form an exchange the engine reports as a Parivartana Yoga.
How common is it?
It occurred in 255 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.5%.
