House lords

The lord of the 12th house placed in the 12th: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 144, the Vimala Yoga the engine always reports for it, the planet for all 12 Ascendants and an engine-computed Capricorn chart with three yogas in one house.

In short

The 12th lord in the 12th house is the ruler of expenditure and loss sitting in its own house. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 144 reads it as heavy expenditure only, without physical comfort, irritable and spiteful, the text's claim and not a forecast. The planet is always in its own sign there, and this app always reports Vimala Yoga for it, a Vipareeta rule from a different source that reads the placement the other way.

What the placement means

"The 12th lord in the 12th house" is the planet that rules the house of expenditure, loss, distant places, sleep and release, sitting in that house itself. A house lord at home keeps its house's affairs with it.

In whole-sign houses (whole-sign houses) a lord in its own house is always in its own sign (swakshetra). The 12th is a dusthana, so this is the case where a difficult house is most strongly held, which the texts can read either way.

The house involved

Only one house is involved: the 12th house (Vyaya Bhava), read for expenditure, losses, foreign or distant places, sleep and release. Its page covers those significations. The Ascendant from which it is counted has its own page, the 1st house (Tanu Bhava), and the 12th is the sign just before it.

What BPHS says about the 12th lord in the 12th

Ch. 24 Sl. 144 closes the 12th lord's set, and the house-lord chapter: if the lord of Vyaya is in the Vyaya Bhava, the native "will only face heavy expenditure", will not have physical felicity, and will be irritable and spiteful. The bphs-alt text agrees. Unlike most own-house verses in Ch. 24 (Sl. 105 for the 9th lord, Sl. 118 for the 10th, Sl. 131 for the 11th), which strengthen a good house, this one strengthens a house of loss, and the verse reads accordingly. This page reports it as the text's claim and does not apply it to anyone.

The very next verses, Sl. 145-148, qualify the whole chapter: results come in full, half or a quarter by strength, and a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, contrary ones cancelling. For eleven of the twelve Ascendants the 12th lord owns a second house, so the qualification matters here.

Two readings of the same placement

This app reports Vimala Yoga whenever the 12th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, so it fires for this placement on every Ascendant. The engine cites the modern case book Advanced Predictive Astrology for the rule, which reads the "double affliction" of a dusthana lord in a dusthana as an inversion into gain and resilience. Sl. 144 reads the same placement as heavy expenditure. The two come from different sources and point different ways; this page reports both and does not reconcile them.

BPHS's own route to a favourable reading of a weak 12th lord, Ch. 39 Sl. 20 and 28, does not help here: those verses ask for the 6th, 8th or 12th lord to be in fall, an inimical sign or combust, and a 12th lord in its own house is never in fall or an enemy sign (it can still be combust). Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 leave the 12th lord to its associations. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 12th lord in the 12th.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's table. Because the 12th sign is the lord's own sign, the dignity column never falls below own sign; moolatrikona or exaltation is decided by degree.

Libra rising is the only row where exaltation is possible: Mercury in Virgo is exalted in its early degrees. Six rows can be moolatrikona by degree: Taurus (Mars in Aries), Virgo (the Sun in Leo), Libra (Mercury in Virgo), Scorpio (Venus in Libra), Capricorn (Jupiter in Sagittarius) and Pisces (Saturn in Aquarius). Virgo and Leo rising are the luminary rows, with no second house.

What travels with the 12th lord

The second-lordship column is where the rows differ. For Aries and Libra rising the 12th lord also owns the 9th, so a trine lord sits at home in the 12th; Sl. 108, the 9th lord in the 12th (loss of fortune through spending on good acts and guests), then applies alongside Sl. 144 and agrees with it about spending. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising it owns the 5th, and Sl. 60 (the 5th lord in the 12th) applies. For Taurus and Scorpio rising it owns the 7th, and Sl. 84 (the 7th lord in the 12th) applies. For Cancer and Capricorn rising it owns the 3rd; for Aquarius rising it is the Lagna lord, and Sl. 12 applies; for Pisces rising it owns the 11th, and Sl. 132 applies. Several of those second verses are themselves about expenditure, so in this placement they reinforce Sl. 144 more often than they cancel it.

Strength changes the reading

With dignity settled by sign, combustion and company decide how fully Sl. 144 applies. For Aquarius rising the planet is the Lagna lord as well, so Ch. 34 Sl. 7 lets the Lagna, the more significant house, lead.

From the 12th, every graha aspects the 6th, the other dusthana. A Mars 12th lord also aspects the 3rd and the 7th; a Jupiter the 4th and the 8th; a Saturn the 2nd and the 9th.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

There is no reverse placement. The 12th lord in the 11th (Sl. 143) mixes losses with gains through others and the 12th lord in the 1st (Sl. 133) applies the 12th house's outflow to the self. Among the dusthana lords at home, the 9th lord in the 9th is the contrast case: a trine lord at home, read as abundant fortune.

Worked example: Capricorn rising, Jupiter in Sagittarius

The engine's deterministic search found: 10 January 1985, 08:37 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Capricorn 17.6. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Capricorn rising the 12th house is Sagittarius and the 12th lord is Jupiter, which also owns Pisces, the 3rd.
  • Jupiter is in Sagittarius at 29.96 degrees, Uttara Ashadha pada 1, in the 12th, "Own sign" (past the moolatrikona degrees), and combust.
  • The Sun (26.18, lord of the 8th) and Mercury (4.27, lord of the 6th and 9th) share the 12th.
  • The engine reports all three Vipareeta yogas in this one house: Vimala (Jupiter), Sarala (the Sun) and Harsha (Mercury).

The 12th here holds the lords of all three dusthanas, which is why the engine reports Harsha, Sarala and Vimala together. Jupiter is the own-sign case Sl. 144 describes, but combust, which under Sl. 145-148 weakens it; its other lordship, the 3rd, is one of Ch. 34's evil lordships. Mercury brings the 9th lordship into the 12th as well. The engine's Kendra-Kona and Parivarthana findings in this chart (Mars with Venus in the 2nd, the Moon and Venus in mutual aspect, Mars and Saturn exchanging signs) come from other houses.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 12th lord in the 12th house in 248, or 8.3%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 12th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the twelfth sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note combustion, company and the second lordship.
  4. Run the yoga calculator, which will report Vimala Yoga.

Questions about the 12th lord in the 12th

What does BPHS say about the 12th lord in its own house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 144: heavy expenditure only, without physical comfort, irritable and spiteful. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength and the other lordship. It is the text's claim, not a forecast.
Is it Vimala Yoga?
Yes, in this app, for every Ascendant: the engine reports Vimala Yoga whenever the 12th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th. The rule comes from Advanced Predictive Astrology, not BPHS, and reads the placement favourably.
Why do BPHS and the yoga disagree?
They come from different sources. BPHS Sl. 144 reads a strongly held house of loss as more loss; the Vipareeta idea reads a dusthana lord in a dusthana as an inversion. This page reports both.
Does it mean living abroad or spiritual release?
Sl. 144 names neither. This app does not predict relocation or spiritual outcomes from a placement.
Which Ascendant can give an exalted 12th lord here?
Only Libra rising: Mercury in Virgo, exalted in its early degrees.
How does the second lordship change the reading?
For eleven Ascendants the 12th lord owns another house, and BPHS Sl. 145-148 say both lordships give results. Several of those second verses for the 12th (the 9th, 7th and 11th lords in the 12th) are also about spending, so they tend to reinforce Sl. 144.
How common is it?
It occurred in 248 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.3%.
