In short

The 2nd lord in the 6th house places the ruler of wealth and family in a dusthana, the house of enemies, disputes, debt and illness. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 18 splits on company: with a benefic, wealth comes through enemies; joined with a malefic, there is loss through them. Ch. 13 adds the general rule that a 2nd lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th weakens finances.

What the placement means

The 2nd house lord carries wealth, family and speech. In the 6th house it enters the house of enemies, competition, disputes, debt and illness. The placement puts the family's resources in contact with opponents, and the classical reading turns on which side gains.

The 6th is a dusthana, one of the three houses (6, 8, 12) where BPHS expects the 2nd lord to weaken finances. It is also an upachaya, a house of growth through effort, and Ch. 24's verse reflects that double character by allowing a gain as well as a loss.

The two houses involved

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3.

The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is the maternal uncle, doubts about death, enemies, ulcers and the step-mother in Ch. 11 Sl. 7. The house pages develop both.

What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 6th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 18 reads: if the 2nd lord is in the 6th "along with a benefic, the native will gain wealth through his enemies"; if it is joined with a malefic, there will be loss through enemies, and the verse adds an injury to the lower legs. bphs-alt.txt has the same text.

The verse is built on company, and specifically on conjunction: "along with" a benefic, "yuti with" a malefic. It reads the 6th as a contest in which the 2nd lord's allies decide the outcome: with benefic support the enemies become a source of wealth, with malefic company they become a drain. The bodily clause is a classical association, reported here and not offered as medical advice or a prediction. When the 2nd lord is alone in the 6th, the verse names no result.

The 2nd-house chapter is less conditional. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 says that if the 2nd lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, "financial conditions will decline". Sl. 6-7 says one will be penniless if the 2nd lord is in an evil house, the 11th lord is also in one, and a malefic occupies the 2nd. Sl. 8 adds loss of wealth through royal punishment when the 2nd and 11th lords are in the 6th, 8th or 12th while Mars is in the 11th and Rahu in the 2nd. Sl. 12 associates a 2nd lord in these houses with trouble of the eyes, again as a classical association.

So Ch. 13 sets a general expectation of decline, and Ch. 24 Sl. 18 refines it by company, allowing a gain where a benefic joins. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then scales either by strength. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.

The 2nd lord and the 6th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

By sign this is a strong table: eight Ascendants give a friendly sign, and Aquarius rising gives exaltation, Jupiter (lord of the 2nd and 11th) in Cancer. Two give debilitation: Aries rising (Venus in Virgo) and Gemini rising (the Moon in Scorpio). Leo rising alone is neutral. Good dignity does not cancel Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2, which is about the house, but Sl. 145-148 would give a dignified planet a larger share of whatever Sl. 18 indicates, gain or loss.

The second lordships add their own colour. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 2nd lord also owns the 11th, so both wealth lordships sit in the 6th together, exactly the double placement Ch. 13 Sl. 6-8 worries about. For Aries and Libra rising it also owns the 7th; for Taurus and Scorpio the 5th; for Virgo and Pisces the 9th; for Sagittarius the 3rd; and for Capricorn rising the 2nd lord is also the Lagna lord.

Strength changes the reading

The first test is the one Sl. 18 names: what shares the 6th with the 2nd lord? Natural benefics in the engine's list are Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon; BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 makes Mercury and the Moon conditional. Natural malefics are the Sun, Mars and Saturn, with Rahu and Ketu. If a benefic and a malefic both join, the verse does not say which wins. Aspects are not in Sl. 18's wording, which speaks of conjunction, though the general rules of Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 count benefic aspects in a house's favour.

The second test is Ch. 13's: where is the 11th lord, and is the 2nd house itself occupied by a malefic? Those two facts decide whether Sl. 6-7's fuller condition is met. The third is dignity, which Sl. 145-148 uses to scale everything.

Worked example: Aries rising, Venus debilitated in Virgo

The engine's deterministic search returned: 19 October 1985, 17:44 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Aries 2.43. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Aries rising makes Taurus the 2nd, so Venus is the 2nd lord; Venus also owns Libra, the 7th.
  • Venus is in Virgo at 10.03 degrees, Hasta pada 1: the 6th house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine marks it Debilitated.
  • Mars, the Lagna lord (and 8th lord), is also in Virgo, at 1.25.
  • Jupiter, debilitated in Capricorn in the 10th, aspects the 6th by its 9th-house special aspect. The 11th lord, Saturn, is in Scorpio in the 8th. The 2nd house holds no planet.

Against Sl. 18 the chart falls on the malefic branch: Venus is joined by Mars, a natural malefic, and by no benefic in the sign. Jupiter's aspect is benefic influence but not the conjunction the verse names. Against Ch. 13, the 2nd lord (6th) and the 11th lord (8th) are both in evil houses, two of Sl. 6-7's three conditions; the third, a malefic in the 2nd, is absent. Venus is debilitated, the low end of Sl. 145-148's scale. This is the text's arithmetic on the engine's positions, not a statement about anyone's money or health. The engine's yoga detector adds two flags: Mars, as 8th lord in the 6th, triggers Sarala Yoga (a rule the code attributes to Advanced Predictive Astrology, not BPHS), and Venus in Virgo with Mercury in Libra is a sign exchange between the 2nd/7th lord and the 3rd/6th lord, reported as a Parivartana Yoga.

The chart also carries a second Ch. 24 verse in the same house, because Mars is the Lagna lord. Sl. 6 reads the Lagna lord in the 6th as troubling only when it is related to a malefic and has no benefic aspect. Here Mars is joined by Venus, a natural benefic, and aspected by Jupiter, so that verse's condition is not met, even while Sl. 18 reads the same conjunction from Venus's side as malefic company. One conjunction, two verses, two different readings: that is how BPHS is built, and it is why the 1st lord in the 6th is worth reading alongside this page for Aries and Libra rising, where Mars and Venus are the Lagna and 2nd lords between them.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 6th house in 208, or 6.9%, below the one-in-twelve that an even spread would suggest. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 6th lord in the 2nd house. The adjacent placements are the 2nd lord in the 5th and the 2nd lord in the 7th; the other dusthana placements are the 2nd lord in the 8th and the 2nd lord in the 12th. For the worked example's planet see Venus in the 6th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 2nd lord in the 6th house

What does BPHS say about the 2nd lord in the 6th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 18: with a benefic, the native gains wealth through enemies; joined with a malefic, there is loss through enemies and an injury the text names. Alone, the verse names no result.
Does it mean financial loss?
BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 expects finances to decline when the 2nd lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, and Ch. 24 refines that by company. These are classical rules about positions; this app does not forecast money.
Can it mean gain?
Yes, in the text: Sl. 18 gives wealth through enemies when a benefic joins the 2nd lord in the 6th.
Which Ascendant gives the strongest planet here?
Aquarius rising, where Jupiter (2nd and 11th lord) is exalted in Cancer. Aries and Gemini rising give debilitated 2nd lords.
How common is it?
208 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (6.9%) in the engine's sample.
