In short
The 2nd lord in the 7th house places the ruler of wealth and family in the angle of marriage, partnership and trade, linking the two houses BPHS calls maraka. Ch. 24 Sl. 19 gives a moralising verse about the native's conduct, an unexpected line that he will be a physician, and a further clause about the spouse when malefics are involved. Ch. 13 separately counts a 2nd lord in an angle as promoting wealth.
What the placement means
The 2nd house lord carries wealth, family and speech. In the 7th house it sits in the angle of marriage, partners, trade and travel. Family resources meet the other party: a spouse, a business partner, a counterparty in a deal.
The 7th is a Kendra, which satisfies BPHS's main wealth rule for the 2nd lord. It is also, with the 2nd, one of the two maraka houses of Ch. 44, so this placement joins both maraka houses through one planet. This page explains what that means in the text and why this app does not turn it into anything more.
The two houses involved
The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3.
The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is the wife, travel, trade, loss of sight and death in Ch. 11 Sl. 8. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 groups it with the 10th as an angle "specially for happiness".
What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 7th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 19 says that with the 2nd lord in the 7th the native will pursue other men's wives "and he will be a doctor". It adds that if a malefic is related to the 2nd lord, by conjunction or aspect, the text casts doubt on the wife's character. bphs-alt.txt has the same wording.
Two things are worth separating. The moral clauses, about the native and about the spouse, are typical of the chapter's idiom for a male native; they are summarised here as the text's claims and are not predictions about anyone's marriage. The occupational clause, "he will be a doctor", is one of very few professions named anywhere in Ch. 24. The verse gives no reason for it. A reader may notice that the 2nd house is linked with food and the 7th with dealings with others, but that is an inference, not something the text says, and this page does not build on it.
The wealth side comes from Ch. 13. Sl. 1-2 says a 2nd lord in an angle or trine promotes wealth, and the 7th is an angle. Ch. 11 Sl. 8 lists trade among the 7th's significations, so a wealth lord in the house of trade has an obvious reading, though again Ch. 24 does not say it. Ch. 13 Sl. 13 adds that malefics with the 2nd lord bring untruthful speech.
Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 names the 2nd and 7th as maraka houses and their lords as marakas, used in BPHS to time the end of life together with dashas. The 2nd lord in the 7th is a maraka lord in a maraka house. This app does not compute longevity or maraka timing, and a single placement is not a longevity reading in BPHS either; the chapter is named so a reader knows where the idea comes from. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 19 by strength as usual. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no verse of their own for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 2nd lord in the 7th sign:
| Ascendant | 2nd lord | Other house it rules | 7th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Venus | 7th (Libra) | Libra | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Taurus | Mercury | 5th (Virgo) | Scorpio | Neutral |
| Gemini | Moon | none | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Cancer | Sun | none | Capricorn | Enemy sign |
| Leo | Mercury | 11th (Gemini) | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Virgo | Venus | 9th (Taurus) | Pisces | Exalted |
| Libra | Mars | 7th (Aries) | Aries | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | 5th (Pisces) | Taurus | Enemy sign |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | 3rd (Aquarius) | Gemini | Friendly sign |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 1st (Capricorn) | Cancer | Enemy sign |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | 11th (Sagittarius) | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Pisces | Mars | 9th (Scorpio) | Virgo | Enemy sign |
Aries and Libra rising are the special rows: for both, one planet owns the 2nd and 7th (Venus for Aries, Mars for Libra), so it sits in its own sign or moolatrikona in the 7th. Both maraka lordships then belong to one planet in its own maraka house. Virgo rising gives exaltation, Venus (lord of the 2nd and 9th) in Pisces. Four rows give an enemy's sign: Cancer (the Sun in Capricorn), Scorpio (Jupiter in Taurus), Capricorn (Saturn in Cancer, also the Lagna lord) and Pisces (Mars in Virgo). Two are friendly and three neutral.
The other lordships carried into the 7th vary widely. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 2nd lord also owns the 11th, so both of the houses BPHS ties to wealth are represented by one planet in the house of trade. For Taurus and Scorpio rising it also owns the 5th, a trine; for Virgo and Pisces the 9th; for Sagittarius the 3rd. For Gemini rising the 2nd lord is the Moon, which owns nothing else, and whether it counts as a benefic in the 7th depends on its phase under BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10. For Cancer rising it is the Sun, a malefic owning nothing else, which is the worked example below.
Strength changes the reading
Sl. 19's second clause depends on malefic contact, by conjunction or aspect. Planets in the 1st aspect the 7th; so do Jupiter from the 3rd and 11th, Mars from the 4th and 12th, and Saturn from the 5th and 10th. A malefic 2nd lord (the Sun for Cancer rising, Mars for Libra and Pisces, Saturn for Sagittarius and Capricorn) is itself a malefic in the 7th; the verse speaks of a malefic "related to" the 2nd lord and does not say whether the lord's own nature counts.
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says benefics owning angles lose benefic force and malefics owning them lose malefic force. That is about ownership, so it applies where the 2nd lord also owns an angle: Aries and Libra rising, where it owns the 7th, and Capricorn rising, where Saturn owns the 1st as well. Dignity and combustion then scale the result through Sl. 145-148.
Worked example: Cancer rising, the Sun in Capricorn
The engine's deterministic search returned: 6 February 1985, 16:28 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Cancer 4.31. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Cancer rising makes Leo the 2nd, so the Sun is the 2nd lord. The Sun owns no other sign.
- The Sun is in Capricorn at 23.96 degrees, Dhanishta pada 1: the 7th house. The engine gives "Neutral" in this chart; the table's sign-only label is Enemy sign.
- Mercury (combust) and a debilitated Jupiter are in Capricorn with it.
- Saturn, the 7th lord, is in Scorpio in the 5th, in an enemy's sign, and aspects the 7th by its 3rd-house special aspect.
Against Sl. 19 the chart has both kinds of company: Jupiter, a natural benefic though debilitated, joins the Sun, and Saturn, a malefic, aspects it. The verse's second clause is triggered by the malefic relation; the verse does not say whether a benefic conjunction offsets it. Against Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 the 2nd lord is in an angle. The Sun is neutral here, the middle of Sl. 145-148's scale, and as a luminary it carries only the 2nd lordship, so there is no second house to weigh in. One more link is visible: the Moon, the Lagna lord, sits in Leo, the 2nd house and the Sun's own sign, so the Lagna lord occupies the house whose lord has gone to the 7th. It is not an exchange (the Sun is in Saturn's sign, not the Moon's), and Ch. 24 reads each placement by its own verse: Sl. 2 for the Moon, Sl. 19 for the Sun.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 7th house in 260, or 8.7%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 7th lord in the 2nd house, links the same two maraka houses from the other side. The adjacent placements are the 2nd lord in the 6th and the 2nd lord in the 8th. For the spouse, BPHS points to the Navamsa (D9), computed by the Navamsa calculator. For the worked example's planet see the Sun in the 7th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
Questions about the 2nd lord in the 7th house
- What does BPHS say about the 2nd lord in the 7th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 19 makes moral claims about the native, says he will be a doctor, and adds a clause about the spouse when a malefic is related to the 2nd lord. This page reports those as the text's statements only.

- BPHS Ch. 44 names the 2nd and 7th houses and their lords as marakas. This app does not compute longevity, and BPHS does not read longevity from one placement.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest planet here?
- Aries and Libra rising (the 2nd lord also owns the 7th and sits in its own sign) and Virgo rising (Venus exalted in Pisces).
- How common is it?
- 260 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.7%) in the engine's sample.
