House lords

The 2nd lord placed in the 8th house: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 20 (land and wealth, with limits on marriage and an elder brother) set against Ch. 13's rule that a 2nd lord in the 8th weakens finances, the 12-Ascendant table and an engine-computed Libra-rising chart.

In short

The 2nd lord in the 8th house places the ruler of wealth and family in the dusthana of longevity, inheritance and hidden matters. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 20 is surprisingly favourable on property, promising abundant land and wealth, while limiting marital happiness and support from an elder brother. Ch. 13 of the same book expects a 2nd lord in the 8th to weaken finances, so the two chapters disagree.

What the placement means

The 2nd house lord carries wealth, family and speech. In the 8th house it sits in the house of longevity, sudden events, hidden matters and, in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9, "wealth of the dead". The placement connects accumulated family wealth with what comes through endings and inheritance.

The 8th is a dusthana, and the 2nd and 8th face each other across the chart, so the 2nd lord in the 8th always aspects its own house by the seventh-house aspect. BPHS reads the placement in two different ways in two different chapters, and the disagreement is the most useful thing to understand about it.

The two houses involved

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3.

The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and things past and future in Ch. 11 Sl. 9. The house pages cover both lists.

What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 8th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 20 says that with the 2nd lord in the 8th the native "will be endowed with abundant land and wealth", but will have limited marital felicity and lack happiness from his elder brother. bphs-alt.txt has the same text.

The first clause is generous, and it fits the 8th's "wealth of the dead" in Ch. 11: property that comes from outside one's own earning. The two limiting clauses are about relationships. They are reported here as the text's statements, not as forecasts about anyone's marriage or siblings. The elder-brother clause is notable because elder siblings are not among the 8th's significations in Ch. 11; the verse states it without explanation.

The 2nd-house chapter reads the same placement the other way. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 says that if the 2nd lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, "financial conditions will decline". Ch. 13 Sl. 12 adds that a 2nd lord in those houses is associated with trouble of the eyes, a classical association reported without medical meaning. So within one book, Ch. 24 promises abundant land and wealth and Ch. 13 expects decline. BPHS does not reconcile them explicitly. Its general method, in Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148, is to weigh the planet's strength and let contrary indications cancel; this page sets the two verses side by side rather than choosing one.

One rule elsewhere in BPHS bears on the conflict without resolving it. Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 lists, among the signs that a house will suffer, a house "not drishtied by its Lord". A 2nd lord in the 8th always aspects the 2nd by the seventh-house aspect, because the two houses are opposite. By that general rule, the 2nd house keeps its lord's gaze even though the lord has gone to a dusthana. The text does not connect this to Sl. 20, and this page does not claim it explains the verse; it is listed because it is the one structural fact about this placement that every chart shares.

Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 adds a sharper condition: the 2nd lord in an evil house, the 11th lord also in one, and a malefic in the 2nd together point to penury. The 2nd lord is also a maraka in Ch. 44, used for timing the end of life; this app makes no longevity judgement and does not apply it. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no verse of their own for this placement.

The 2nd lord and the 8th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

This is a weak table by sign. No Ascendant gives a friendly, own or exalted sign. Leo rising gives debilitation: Mercury, lord of the 2nd and 11th, in Pisces. Five rows give an enemy's sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius) and six a neutral one. In a real chart the engine adds the temporary relationship, which can lift a neutral planet to friendly, as it does in the worked example below.

Two rows carry a second lordship that Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 treats as important for the 8th. For Leo and Aquarius rising, the 2nd lord also owns the 11th, so both wealth lordships sit in the 8th, the double placement Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 worries about. For Capricorn rising the 2nd lord is Saturn, which is also the Lagna lord, so the person's planet and the wealth planet are in the 8th together. For Taurus and Scorpio the second house is the 5th, and for Virgo and Pisces the 9th, both trines.

Strength changes the reading

Because the house verdicts conflict, strength decides which one BPHS's own method would let dominate. A dignified 2nd lord would carry more of Sl. 20's land and wealth; a weak one more of Ch. 13's decline. Aspects on the 8th come from planets in the 2nd (seventh-house aspect), Jupiter from the 4th and 12th, Mars from the 5th and 1st, and Saturn from the 6th and 11th. Benefic aspects are the texts' usual support for a dusthana, malefic ones the reverse.

The 8th lord's own position matters too. Ch. 19 reads the 8th through its lord, and Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the 8th lord's effects depend on association and that an 8th lord also owning a trine is auspicious. A 2nd lord sitting in the 8th is in the 8th lord's sign, so the condition of that sign's owner shapes how well the guest is received.

Worked example: Libra rising, Mars in Taurus

The engine's deterministic search returned: 8 May 1985, 18:38 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Libra 20.31. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Libra rising makes Scorpio the 2nd, so Mars is the 2nd lord. Mars also owns Aries, the 7th: both maraka houses.
  • Mars is in Taurus at 14.78 degrees, Rohini pada 2: the 8th house. Not retrograde, not combust. The sign-only label is Neutral; in this chart the engine gives "Friendly sign".
  • Jupiter (debilitated, in Capricorn in the 4th) aspects the 8th by its 5th-house aspect, and Saturn (retrograde, in Scorpio in the 2nd) aspects it by the seventh-house aspect.
  • The 8th lord, Venus, is exalted in Pisces in the 6th. The 11th lord, the Sun, is exalted in Aries in the 7th.

This chart leans towards the stronger side of the conflict. Mars is friendly by chart, the 8th's owner Venus is exalted, and the 11th lord is exalted in an angle, so Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7's penury condition (11th lord also in an evil house) is not met. Against that, the 2nd house holds Saturn, a malefic, and Saturn aspects the 8th; Jupiter's benefic aspect is from a debilitated planet. Sl. 145-148 would place Mars around the middle of its scale. The text supplies the rules; this page does not convert them into a statement about anyone's wealth or family.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 8th house in 245, or 8.2%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 8th lord in the 2nd house, joins the same pair from the other side; when both happen the lords have exchanged signs (parivartana). The adjacent placements are the 2nd lord in the 7th and the 2nd lord in the 9th. The other dusthana cases are the 6th and the 12th. For the worked example's planet see Mars in the 8th house.

Questions about the 2nd lord in the 8th house

What does BPHS say about the 2nd lord in the 8th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 20: abundant land and wealth, with limited marital happiness and little happiness from an elder brother. Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 separately expects finances to decline with the 2nd lord in the 8th.
Which BPHS verse is right?
The book gives both and does not reconcile them directly. Its general method (Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148) is to weigh the planet's strength and let contrary indications cancel.
Does it mean an inheritance?
Ch. 11 lists "wealth of the dead" among the 8th's significations, and Sl. 20 speaks of land and wealth. This app reports those as classical associations and does not forecast inheritances.
Why is the dignity table so weak?
For every Ascendant the 8th sign is ruled by a planet the 2nd lord is neutral or hostile to by natural relationship, or, for Leo rising, it is Mercury's debilitation sign.
How common is it?
245 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.2%) in the engine's sample.
