In short
The 2nd lord in the 9th house places the ruler of wealth and family in the trine of fortune, religion and teachers. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 21 reads it as wealthy, diligent and skilful, unwell in childhood but happy later, and given to pilgrimage and religious observance. If the 9th lord is in the 2nd at the same time, BPHS names further results, including Khadga Yoga when the Lagna lord is also well placed.
What the placement means
The 2nd house lord carries wealth, family and speech. In the 9th house it sits in the house of fortune, religion, pilgrimage and teachers. The placement joins what the family holds to what the texts call luck and dharma, and BPHS reads it largely in those terms.
The 9th is the strongest trikona, and with the 5th it is one of the two houses BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 calls "specially for wealth". A 2nd lord here meets the trine condition of the main wealth rule in Ch. 13.
The two houses involved
The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3.
The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is fortunes, the wife's brother, religion, the brother's wife and visits to shrines in Ch. 11 Sl. 10. The house pages develop both.
What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 9th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 21 says that with the 2nd lord in the 9th the native "will be wealthy, diligent, skilful", will be sick in childhood and happy later, and will visit shrines and observe religious codes. bphs-alt.txt has the same words.
The verse has a time structure that few in the chapter share: difficulty early, happiness later. It does not say why. The religious clauses come straight from the 9th's list in Ch. 11 (religion, visits to shrines), and the wealth clause from the 2nd. "Diligent" and "skilful" describe effort, which suggests wealth that is worked for rather than simply received, though the text does not say so explicitly. The childhood-illness clause is a classical statement reported here, not a health prediction or medical advice.
Two other BPHS passages build on this placement. Ch. 20 Sl. 10 says that if the 9th lord is in the 2nd while the 2nd lord is in the 9th, there will be fortunes, conveyances and fame after the 32nd year, a date this page reports as the text's and does not use. Ch. 36 Sl. 25-26 names Khadga Yoga for the same exchange when the Lagna lord is also in an angle or trine, with results of wealth, fortune, learning and skill. The engine flags any such exchange as Parivartana Yoga; it does not test Khadga Yoga's third condition separately.
Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 adds the general rule that a 2nd lord in a trine promotes wealth, and Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales all of it by strength. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 2nd lord in the 9th sign:
| Ascendant | 2nd lord | Other house it rules | 9th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Venus | 7th (Libra) | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Taurus | Mercury | 5th (Virgo) | Capricorn | Neutral |
| Gemini | Moon | none | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Cancer | Sun | none | Pisces | Friendly sign |
| Leo | Mercury | 11th (Gemini) | Aries | Neutral |
| Virgo | Venus | 9th (Taurus) | Taurus | Own sign |
| Libra | Mars | 7th (Aries) | Gemini | Enemy sign |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | 5th (Pisces) | Cancer | Exalted |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | 3rd (Aquarius) | Leo | Enemy sign |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 1st (Capricorn) | Virgo | Friendly sign |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | 11th (Sagittarius) | Libra | Enemy sign |
| Pisces | Mars | 9th (Scorpio) | Scorpio | Own sign |
Three rows are strong. For Virgo rising Venus owns both the 2nd (Libra) and the 9th (Taurus), so in Taurus it is in its own sign. For Pisces rising Mars owns the 2nd (Aries) and the 9th (Scorpio), so it too is in its own sign. For Scorpio rising Jupiter, lord of the 2nd and 5th, is exalted in Cancer, a wealth lord that also owns one trine sitting exalted in the other. Three rows give an enemy's sign (Libra: Mars in Gemini; Sagittarius: Saturn in Leo; Aquarius: Jupiter in Libra), two a friendly sign and four a neutral one.
For Virgo and Pisces rising the 2nd and 9th lords are one planet, so the Ch. 20 and Khadga exchange cannot occur in those charts: there is no second planet to swap with. The placement is instead the stronger, simpler case of a single lord of both houses sitting in one of them.
Several other rows put two verses on one planet. For Capricorn rising the 2nd lord is Saturn, also the Lagna lord, so Saturn in Virgo is the Lagna lord in the 9th (Ch. 24 Sl. 9, the most favourable of the Lagna-lord verses) as well as the 2nd lord in the 9th (Sl. 21); it is in a friendly sign, and Sl. 145-148 asks for both to be read together. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the 2nd lord also owns the 5th, so a planet holding one trine lordship sits in the other trine, which Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 reads favourably for both houses. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 2nd lord also owns the 11th, bringing both wealth lordships into the house of fortune. Aries and Libra rising carry the 7th along with the 2nd: both maraka lordships, placed in a trine.
Strength changes the reading
The standard conditions apply: dignity, combustion, and company. Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 still reads the 2nd and 11th lords both combust or with malefics as a sign of penury, and for Leo and Aquarius rising those two lords are one planet. Conjunctions in the 9th matter as they do everywhere: a benefic companion is the texts' usual support, a malefic the opposite.
The 9th lord's own position matters for the exchange yogas. Check where it is: in the 2nd (the exchange), in an angle or trine, or in a dusthana. The aspects on the 9th come from the 3rd by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter in the 1st or 5th, Mars in the 2nd or 6th, and Saturn in the 7th or 12th.
Worked example: Taurus rising, Mercury in Capricorn
The engine's deterministic search returned: 28 January 1985, 13:51 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Taurus 20.77. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Taurus rising makes Gemini the 2nd, so Mercury is the 2nd lord; Mercury also owns Virgo, the 5th.
- Mercury is in Capricorn at 0.16 degrees, Uttara Ashadha pada 2: the 9th house, at the very start of the sign. Not retrograde; the engine says not combust, with dignity "Friendly sign".
- The 9th is crowded: the Sun (14.72) and Jupiter (4.22, debilitated and combust) are in Capricorn too.
- The 9th lord, Saturn, is in Scorpio in the 7th and aspects the 9th by its 3rd-house special aspect. The Lagna lord, Venus, is exalted in Pisces in the 11th.
The trine condition of Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 holds, and Mercury, owning the 2nd and 5th, brings two wealth-linked lordships into a wealth trine. Its company is mixed: the Sun is a malefic and Jupiter a debilitated, combust benefic, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 says Mercury takes on the nature of its company. There is no 2nd-9th exchange, since Saturn is in the 7th rather than the 2nd, so neither Ch. 20 Sl. 10 nor Khadga Yoga applies. The Lagna lord is exalted in the 11th, but the 11th is neither an angle nor a trine, so Khadga's third condition would not have been met even with the exchange. Sl. 145-148 would read Mercury, friendly but in mixed company, as a middling carrier of Sl. 21.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 9th house in 246, or 8.2%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 9th lord in the 2nd house; together they form the exchange described above, explained further under Parivartana Yoga. The adjacent placements are the 2nd lord in the 8th and the 2nd lord in the 10th; the other trine is the 2nd lord in the 5th. For the worked example's planet see Mercury in the 9th house, and for wealth combinations generally dhana yoga. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
