In short
The 9th lord in the 2nd house is the ruler of fortune and dharma placed in the house of family, speech and accumulated wealth. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 98 reads it as a scholar, dear to all, wealthy and sensuous, with happiness from spouse and children. How much of that the text expects depends on the planet's strength, which changes with the Ascendant.
What the placement means
A house lord carries its house's affairs to wherever it sits. "The 9th lord in the 2nd house" is the ruler of the house of fortune, the father and dharma, standing in the house of family, speech, food and stored wealth.
Counted from the 9th, the 2nd is the 6th house, so by the texts' own counting the lord of fortune has moved into a position that is difficult relative to its own house, while being in a wealth house relative to the Ascendant. That double view is typical of BPHS and is why the verse below is about money and learning rather than about the father. Houses here are whole-sign (whole-sign houses): the placement holds when the planet ruling the 9th sign stands in the second sign from the rising sign, which needs a known birth time.
The two houses involved
The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is the trine of fortune, teachers, the father and religious merit; its page covers those significations in detail.
The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) holds family, speech, the face, food and accumulated wealth. It is neither a Kendra nor a trine, and BPHS Ch. 34 does not put it in the group of difficult houses either.
What BPHS says about the 9th lord in the 2nd
Ch. 24 Sl. 98 is the verse. If the lord of Dharm is in the Dhan Bhava, it says, the native "will be a scholar, be dear to all, wealthy", sensuous, and endowed with happiness from wife, sons and the like. The bphs-alt translation reads the same. Every clause in it belongs to one of the 2nd house's own themes: learning shown in speech, wealth, and the family circle.
Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then qualify every verse in the chapter. The effects are to be judged by strength: full, half or a quarter for a strong, middling or weak planet. A planet owning two houses gives the results of both, contrary ones cancelling. Since the 9th lord in the 2nd is, for several Ascendants, also the 2nd lord sitting in its own sign, that second clause matters more here than for most placements.
The wealth passages that bear on it
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 call the 5th and 9th houses "specially for wealth" and say a Kon lord gives auspicious results. Ch. 41 Sl. 16 makes the same point about time: the 9th and 5th lords are "capable of bestowing wealth", as are grahas joined with them, during their Dasha periods. Put together with Sl. 98, the 2nd is the house where the texts' wealth language for the 9th lord is most concentrated. This is the ground the modern Dhana Yoga idea grows from, though the engine's own Dhan Yoga test follows the specific sign combinations of Ch. 41 Sl. 2-15, not this lordship.
Lakshmi Yoga (Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28) needs the 9th lord in a Kendra, so a 9th lord in the 2nd does not qualify however strong it is. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse for the placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The table gives the 9th lord, the sign of the 2nd house and the engine's sign-level dignity with no chart (natural relationships only; a real chart can shift the friendly-neutral-enemy tier by one step).
| Ascendant | 9th lord | 2nd house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Jupiter | Taurus | Enemy sign | 12th |
| Taurus | Saturn | Gemini | Friendly sign | 10th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Cancer | Enemy sign | 8th |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Leo | Friendly sign | 6th |
| Leo | Mars | Virgo | Enemy sign | 4th |
| Virgo | Venus | Libra | Moolatrikona or own sign by degree | 2nd |
| Libra | Mercury | Scorpio | Neutral | 12th |
| Scorpio | Moon | Sagittarius | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Sagittarius | Sun | Capricorn | Enemy sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Aquarius | Neutral | 6th |
| Aquarius | Venus | Pisces | Exalted | 4th |
| Pisces | Mars | Aries | Moolatrikona or own sign by degree | 2nd |
The pattern is sharper than for most placements. With Virgo and Pisces rising the 9th lord also rules the 2nd (Venus rules Libra and Taurus for Virgo; Mars rules Aries and Scorpio for Pisces), so the planet is in its own sign, a 2nd lord at home carrying the 9th with it. With Aquarius rising the 9th lord is Venus, exalted in Pisces, and Venus also rules the 4th for that Ascendant. At the other end, four rows put the 9th lord in an enemy sign: Jupiter in Taurus (Aries rising), Saturn in Cancer (Gemini), Mars in Virgo (Leo) and the Sun in Capricorn (Sagittarius).
Strength changes the reading
Sl. 145-148 make the planet's dignity the first scale. An own-sign or exalted 9th lord in the 2nd is the case in which the text expects most of Sl. 98; an enemy-sign one, less; a debilitated one, a quarter. No Ascendant puts the 9th lord debilitated in the 2nd.
The second scale is company. Ch. 41 Sl. 16 extends the wealth promise to grahas joined with the 9th lord, so in this house the texts would look at who shares the 2nd as closely as at the lord. The third is the other lordship: for Aries rising the 9th lord Jupiter also rules the 12th, the house of loss, and for Capricorn rising Mercury also rules the 6th. Ch. 34 Sl. 7 says the planet owning the more significant house stalls the effects of the lesser, and a trine outranks a dusthana.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 2nd lord in the 9th house, is Sl. 21: wealthy, diligent and skilful, sick in childhood and happy later, visiting shrines. Together they make a parivartana between a wealth house and a trine, which the engine flags as a sign exchange. One house earlier, the 9th lord in the 1st (Sl. 97) is about honour and the person; one house later, the 9th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 99) turns to siblings. Sl. 98 is the only 9th-lord verse that names scholarship and wealth together.
Worked example: Aquarius rising, exalted Venus in the 2nd
The engine's deterministic search found this chart first: 24 March 1985, 05:33 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Aquarius 21.28. Anyone can enter it in the birth chart calculator and see the same positions.
- With Aquarius rising the 9th house is Libra, so the 9th lord is Venus, which also rules Taurus, the 4th.
- The 2nd house is Pisces. Venus is there at 26.51 degrees, Revati pada 3, retrograde, and the engine marks it "Exalted".
- The Sun (Pisces 9.65, "Friendly sign") and Mercury (Pisces 24.97, "Debilitated") share the 2nd with it.
- The Lagna lord Saturn is in Scorpio in the 10th, retrograde, "Enemy sign"; Jupiter, lord of the 2nd and 11th, is in Capricorn in the 12th, "Debilitated".
On Sl. 145-148's scale this is the strong case: an exalted 9th lord that is also a yogakaraka for Aquarius rising (Ch. 34 Sl. 13, lord of a Kon and a Kendra). Ch. 41 Sl. 16 would count the Sun and Mercury, joined with it, among the planets able to give wealth in their periods. The chart also shows what a strong 9th lord does not settle. The 2nd house's own lord, Jupiter, is debilitated in the 12th, and the 2nd holds a debilitated Mercury; BPHS reads the house and its lord as well as the planets visiting it.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 9th lord in the 2nd house in 244, or 8.1%. That counts moments of the sky, not people.
Checking it in your own chart
- Get your rising sign from the Lagna calculator and read the 9th lord from the table.
- In your birth chart, check whether it sits in the second sign from the Ascendant.
- Note its dignity and any second house it rules, then who is in the 2nd with it.
- Check the 9th lord's periods in the Vimshottari Dasha calculator, the time Ch. 41 Sl. 16 points to.
Questions about the 9th lord in the 2nd
- What does BPHS say about the 9th lord in the 2nd house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 98: a scholar, dear to all, wealthy, sensuous, with happiness from spouse and children. Sl. 145-148 scale the result by the planet's strength.
- Does the 9th lord in the 2nd make someone rich?
- BPHS names wealth in the verse and Ch. 41 Sl. 16 ties the 9th lord to wealth in its Dasha, but both are classical statements about tendencies, scaled by strength. This app does not turn a placement into a forecast about a person's money.
- Is it a Lakshmi Yoga?
- No. Lakshmi Yoga in BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28 needs the 9th lord in a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) in its own, moolatrikona or exaltation sign. The 2nd is not a Kendra.
- For which Ascendants is the 9th lord strongest in the 2nd?
- By sign alone: Aquarius rising (Venus exalted in Pisces), and Virgo and Pisces rising, where the 9th lord is in its own sign. The table on this page lists all twelve.
- How common is the placement?
- It occurred in 244 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.1%). That describes moments in time, not people.
