In short
The 9th lord in the 3rd house is the ruler of fortune and dharma placed in the house of siblings, effort and courage, exactly opposite its own house. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 99 reads it as fraternal happiness, wealth, virtue and charm. By sign alone the placement is often weak, with five Ascendants putting the 9th lord in an enemy sign and one in debilitation.
What the placement means
"The 9th lord in the 3rd house" is the lord of the house of fortune, the father and dharma, standing in the house of younger siblings, initiative, courage and short journeys. Wherever a lord goes it takes its house's affairs with it.
The geometry is the interesting part. Counted from the 9th, the 3rd is the 7th house: the two are opposite signs. Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, so a 9th lord in the 3rd always looks directly back at its own house. The 3rd is also an upachaya, one of the houses of growth (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th). Houses are counted whole-sign here (whole-sign houses), so the placement depends on a known birth time.
The two houses involved
The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is the trine of fortune, the father, teachers and merit.
The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is the house of co-born siblings, valour, effort and the hands. BPHS Ch. 34 lists its lord among those that give evil effects; that rule is about owning the 3rd, not about a planet visiting it.
What BPHS says about the 9th lord in the 3rd
Ch. 24 Sl. 99 is short: if the lord of Dharm is in the Sahaj Bhava, the native "will be endowed with fraternal bliss", wealthy, virtuous and charming. The bphs-alt text has the same words. The verse takes the 3rd house's chief theme, siblings, and adds three general goods. It says nothing about the father, which is notable because the reverse placement does.
As with every verse in the chapter, Sl. 145-148 scale it. A strong lord gives the full result, a middling one half, a weak one a quarter; a lord owning two houses gives both lordships' results, with contrary results cancelling. On the sign-level table below, a strong 9th lord in the 3rd is uncommon, so on the text's own terms the verse will often apply only in part.
Looking back at the 9th
BPHS reads a house as supported when its lord aspects it. The 7th-house aspect that every graha casts means the 9th lord in the 3rd always aspects the 9th, whatever planet it is. This app's aspect rule (graha drishti) adds the special aspects of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn on top, so a Mars 9th lord in the 3rd also aspects the 6th and the 10th, a Jupiter the 7th and 11th, a Saturn the 5th and 12th. The verse itself does not mention the aspect; the point is only that this placement never leaves the 9th house unwatched by its lord.
Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse on the 9th lord in the 3rd.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship table for all twelve Ascendants, with the sign-only dignity (natural relationships; a real chart can move the tier).
| Ascendant | 9th lord | 3rd house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Jupiter | Gemini | Enemy sign | 12th |
| Taurus | Saturn | Cancer | Enemy sign | 10th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Leo | Enemy sign | 8th |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Virgo | Enemy sign | 6th |
| Leo | Mars | Libra | Neutral | 4th |
| Virgo | Venus | Scorpio | Neutral | 2nd |
| Libra | Mercury | Sagittarius | Neutral | 12th |
| Scorpio | Moon | Capricorn | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Sagittarius | Sun | Aquarius | Enemy sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Pisces | Debilitated | 6th |
| Aquarius | Venus | Aries | Neutral | 4th |
| Pisces | Mars | Taurus | Neutral | 2nd |
This is one of the weaker rows in the 9th lord's set. No Ascendant puts the 9th lord exalted or in its own sign in the 3rd. Five put it in an enemy sign: Jupiter in Gemini (Aries rising) and in Virgo (Cancer), Saturn in Cancer (Taurus) and in Leo (Gemini), and the Sun in Aquarius (Sagittarius). With Capricorn rising the 9th lord Mercury is debilitated in Pisces. The remaining six are neutral. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 9th lord also owns the 4th, a yogakaraka by Ch. 34 Sl. 13, which is the main counterweight in those rows.
Strength changes the reading
With dignity so often middling, the other measures carry more weight. A 9th lord that is combust or joined by malefics in the 3rd is weaker again. A second lordship can pull either way: Jupiter for Aries rising also owns the 12th, Mercury for Capricorn also owns the 6th; Saturn for Taurus rising owns the 10th, a Kendra. Ch. 34 Sl. 7 says the more significant lordship stalls the lesser, and the 9th, a trine, outranks the 6th and the 12th.
One distinction is easy to blur. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says a graha that owns the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects. That is a rule about lordship, and it does not apply to the 9th lord merely because it stands in the 3rd. What the 3rd adds by placement is its upachaya character: houses of growth, where the texts generally expect matters to improve with time and effort rather than arrive ready-made. Sl. 99 itself is consistent with that, since nothing in it is a loss.
Occupants of the 9th matter too, because the 9th lord's aspect falls on them. A 9th house holding its lord's friends is in a different state from one holding its enemies, and that is a reading BPHS makes from the aspect rule, not from Sl. 99.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 3rd lord in the 9th (Sl. 33), is the verse that does mention the father: lack of paternal happiness, fortune through the spouse, and the pleasures of children. Both together are a sign exchange, a parivartana between an upachaya and a trine. The 9th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 98) is about learning and wealth; the 9th lord in the 4th (Sl. 100) about houses, vehicles and the mother. Sl. 99 is the 9th lord's sibling verse.
Worked example: Leo rising, Mars in Libra
This chart is the first match from the engine's deterministic search: 18 January 1986, 19:54 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 2.18. It can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator.
- With Leo rising the 9th house is Aries, so the 9th lord is Mars, which also rules Scorpio, the 4th: the Leo yogakaraka.
- The 3rd house is Libra. Mars is there at 27.59 degrees, Vishakha pada 3, not retrograde, not combust.
- Its dignity in this chart is "Friendly sign": neutral to Venus by nature, lifted one tier by the chart's temporary relationship.
- Ketu is also in Libra (11.23). The 9th house, Aries, holds the Moon (11.86) and Rahu. The Lagna lord, the Sun, is in Capricorn in the 6th.
By the aspect rule, Mars in the 3rd aspects the 9th (its 7th), the 6th (its 4th) and the 10th (its 8th), so the 9th lord here touches the house of fortune, a dusthana and a Kendra at once, and its 7th aspect lands on the Moon in Aries. On Sl. 145-148's scale a friendly-sign, uncombust Mars is a middle-to-good case, better than the sign-only table gives Leo rising, and a reminder that the chart's temporary friendships can lift a neutral row.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 9th lord in the 3rd house in 269, or 9.0%. That is a count of moments, not of people.
Checking it in your own chart
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 9th lord from the table.
- Open your birth chart and check whether that planet is in the third sign from the rising sign.
- Note its dignity, combustion and second lordship.
- Look at what sits in the 9th, since the lord's 7th aspect falls there.
Questions about the 9th lord in the 3rd
- What does BPHS say about the 9th lord in the 3rd house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 99: happiness through siblings, wealth, virtue and charm. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength.
- Does the 9th lord aspect the 9th house from the 3rd?
- Yes. The 9th is the 7th house from the 3rd, and every graha aspects the 7th from itself. See drishti for how aspects work in this app.
- Is the 9th lord in the 3rd bad for the father?
- Sl. 99 does not mention the father at all. The verse that speaks of paternal happiness is the reverse placement, the 3rd lord in the 9th (Sl. 33). This app does not turn either into a prediction about a parent.
- Why is this placement often weak by sign?
- For five Ascendants the 9th lord lands in an enemy sign, and for Capricorn rising Mercury is debilitated in Pisces. None put it in its own or exaltation sign. Real charts can differ because temporary relationships shift the tier.
- Which Ascendants make the 9th lord a yogakaraka here?
- Leo rising (Mars rules the 4th and 9th) and Aquarius rising (Venus rules the 4th and 9th). BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13 calls a planet owning a Kon and a Kendra a Yog Karak; for Leo the 3rd is Libra, for Aquarius it is Aries, both neutral signs for those planets by nature.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 269 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (9.0%), moments rather than people.
