House lords

The 3rd lord placed in the 9th house: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 33 (little happiness from the father, fortune through the spouse), the Ch. 14 trine rule for siblings, the Ch. 20 rules on the father, the 12-Ascendant table and an engine-computed Cancer-rising chart with Mercury debilitated.

In short

The 3rd lord in the 9th house moves the ruler of courage, effort and siblings into the trine of fortune, religion and the father. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 33 reads it as lacking happiness from the father but gaining fortune through the spouse, with children and other pleasures. The 9th is also the 7th house counted from the 3rd, and by sign this is one of the weakest tables in the 3rd-lord series.

What the placement means

The 3rd house lord rules courage, effort, siblings and short journeys. In the 9th house it sits in the house of fortune, religion, teachers, long journeys and, in BPHS, the father. Personal effort is placed in the house of luck and inherited direction.

The 9th is the 7th sign from the 3rd, so the lord faces its own house across the chart and aspects it by the seventh-house aspect. It is also the strongest trikona from the Lagna. Those two facts give the placement its character in the texts: a 3rd lord in a trine for Ch. 14's sibling rule, and a link between the native's own effort and the father's house that Ch. 24 reads with some reserve.

The two houses involved

The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction and journeys in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4.

The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is fortunes, the wife's brother, religion, the brother's wife and visits to shrines in Ch. 11 Sl. 10; Ch. 20 adds a long section on the father. The house pages develop both.

What BPHS says about the 3rd lord in the 9th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 33 says that with the 3rd lord in the 9th the native "will lack paternal bliss", will "make fortunes through wife", and will enjoy children and other pleasures. bphs-alt.txt has the same text.

Two of the three clauses come straight from the 9th: fortune and the father. The verse separates them, giving fortune and taking away paternal happiness, and routes the fortune through the spouse. Ch. 11 Sl. 10 lists "wife's brother" and "brother's wife" among the 9th's significations, which shows the 9th was read for in-laws as well as for the father; the verse does not explain its spouse clause, and this page does not add an explanation. The paternal clause is reported as the text's statement, not as a forecast about anyone's father.

The 3rd-house chapter reads the placement favourably for siblings: Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 gives happiness through siblings when the 3rd lord is in a trine. The 9th-house chapter gives the fuller rules for fortune and the father. Ch. 20 Sl. 1 says the native is fortunate when the 9th lord is in the 9th with strength. Sl. 3 says the father is fortunate when the 9th lord is strong, Venus is in the 9th and Jupiter is in an angle. And Sl. 12, at the other extreme, says that when the 10th and 3rd lords lack strength while the 9th lord is debilitated or combust, the native faces penury; that is a combination this page summarises and does not apply as a prediction.

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 keeps its caution that the owner of the 3rd gives evil effects, and says trine lords give good results. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 33 by strength and reads both lordships. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, the 9th lord in the 3rd (Ch. 24 Sl. 99), is warm: happiness from siblings, wealth, virtue and charm. The 9th lord brings fortune into the house of siblings and the text finds fraternal happiness; the 3rd lord brings effort into the house of the father and the text finds paternal happiness lacking. As with several pairs in this chapter, the two directions are not symmetrical. When both occur at once, the lords have exchanged signs, which the engine reports as Parivartana Yoga.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 3rd lord in the 9th sign:

The 3rd lord and the 9th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

By sign this is a weak table. No Ascendant gives a friendly, own or exalted sign. Cancer rising gives debilitation: Mercury, lord of the 3rd and 12th, in Pisces. Five rows give an enemy's sign (Gemini, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn) and six a neutral one. In a real chart the engine also applies the temporary relationship between the planet and the sign's lord, which can raise a neutral to friendly, so these labels are starting points. By Sl. 145-148's logic, the typical case here is a middling or weak planet carrying a partial share of Sl. 33.

The second lordships give some rows a trine-related character and others a difficult one. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 3rd lord also owns the 10th, so an angle lord sits in a trine, one of BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12's yoga-forming relations (qualified by Sl. 15 because the 3rd is also owned). For Scorpio rising it owns the 4th, another angle. For Aries and Libra it owns the 6th; for Virgo and Pisces the 8th; for Cancer and Capricorn the 12th; for Sagittarius the 2nd. Taurus and Gemini rising give the luminaries.

Strength changes the reading

Dignity, combustion and company scale the verse. Aspects on the 9th come from the 3rd by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 1st and 5th, Mars from the 6th and 2nd, and Saturn from the 7th and 12th. The 9th lord's own strength matters for Ch. 20's rules about fortune and the father, so a reader checks it alongside the 3rd lord. The divisional chart BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to parents is the Dwadashamsa.

Worked example: Cancer rising, Mercury debilitated in Pisces

The engine's deterministic search returned: 20 April 1985, 13:24 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Cancer 26.31. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Cancer rising makes Virgo the 3rd, so Mercury is the 3rd lord. Mercury also owns Gemini, the 12th.
  • Mercury is in Pisces at 13.48 degrees, Uttara Bhadrapada pada 4: the 9th house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine marks it Debilitated.
  • Venus is in Pisces too, at 12.79, exalted and retrograde, less than a degree from Mercury.
  • The 9th lord, Jupiter, is debilitated in Capricorn in the 7th. The 10th lord, Mars, is in Taurus in the 11th, friendly. Nothing other than the nodes aspects the 9th.

This chart carries the table's one debilitation. By Sl. 145-148 Mercury gives only a small share of Sl. 33. Its companion is the strongest planet in the chart by dignity, exalted Venus, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 says Mercury takes the nature of its company, here a benefic. For the father's side, Ch. 20 Sl. 3's conditions are partly present (Venus in the 9th, Jupiter in an angle) but its central one, a strong 9th lord, is not: Jupiter is debilitated. Ch. 20 Sl. 12's penury combination is not met either, because the 10th lord Mars is in a friendly sign rather than weak. The page lays the rules side by side and draws no conclusion about any person.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 3rd lord in the 9th house in 223, or 7.4%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 9th lord in the 3rd house. The adjacent placements are the 3rd lord in the 8th and the 3rd lord in the 10th; the other trine is the 3rd lord in the 5th. The Dwadashamsa (D12) calculator computes the parents' division. For the worked example's planet see Mercury in the 9th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 3rd lord in the 9th house

What does BPHS say about the 3rd lord in the 9th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 33: lacking happiness from the father, gaining fortune through the spouse, and enjoying children and other pleasures.
Does it mean a difficult relationship with my father?
Sl. 33 contains that clause. It is reported as the text's statement; this app does not forecast family relationships, and BPHS itself reads the father from the 9th lord, the Sun and other factors too.
Is it good for siblings?
BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 says a 3rd lord in a trine gives happiness through siblings, and the 9th is a trine.
Why is the dignity table so weak?
For every Ascendant the 9th sign is ruled by a planet the 3rd lord is neutral or hostile to by natural relationship, and for Cancer rising it is Mercury's debilitation sign.
How common is it?
223 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (7.4%) in the engine's sample.
