In short
The 3rd lord in the 8th house joins the two houses BPHS calls the houses of longevity: the 3rd, of effort and siblings, and the 8th, of hidden matters and the length of life. Ch. 24 Sl. 32 is one of the harshest verses in its chapter, speaking of theft, servitude and a dramatic death, and is reported here only as the text's claim. The planet is in its own sign for Virgo and Pisces rising and exalted for Leo rising.
What the placement means
The 3rd house lord rules courage, effort, siblings and attendants. In the 8th house it sits in the house of longevity, hidden matters, sudden events and the wealth of the dead. The 8th is the 6th counted from the 3rd, so from the 3rd house's own point of view the lord has gone into its house of difficulty.
BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 calls the 3rd and 8th "the two Bhavas of longevity", so this placement joins them. This app does not compute longevity and makes no such reading; the pairing is mentioned because it explains why the classical texts treat this placement with particular weight. The 8th is also a dusthana.
The two houses involved
The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction, journeys and the death of parents in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4.
The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead and things past and to come in Ch. 11 Sl. 9. The house pages cover both.
What BPHS says about the 3rd lord in the 8th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 32 is severe. In summary, it says the native will be a thief, will earn his living by serving others, and will die at the gate of a royal palace. bphs-alt.txt has the same wording. It is reported here as the classical text's statement, briefly, and is not a prediction about anyone: this app does not read character, livelihood or the manner of death from a single placement.
Read as a construction, the verse takes three of the 3rd house's significations (servants and service, effort, and, from Ch. 11, "death") and places them in the 8th's register of hidden things and endings. "Serving others" echoes the 3rd's attendants; the death clause echoes the 8th. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 applies to it like every other verse: full, half or quarter results by strength, both of the planet's lordships read together, contrary indications cancelling.
The 3rd-house chapter adds a rule that names this house. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 says that if the 3rd lord and Mars are together in the 8th, the text expects harm to siblings, and that happiness through siblings comes instead when Mars or the 3rd lord is in an angle, trine, exaltation or friendly division. The 8th is not among the favourable houses, but exaltation is among the favourable conditions, so an exalted 3rd lord in the 8th meets one clause of the favourable rule while sitting in the house the unfavourable rule names. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 adds that the owner of the 3rd gives evil effects. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.
Set beside the reverse verse
The reverse, the 8th lord in the 3rd (Ch. 24 Sl. 87), is milder: no happiness from siblings, indolence, a lack of servants and strength. Both directions read the 3rd-8th link as costly to the 3rd house's matters: siblings in Sl. 87, honest effort in Sl. 32. If both occur the two lords have exchanged signs, which the engine reports as Parivartana Yoga; with an 8th-house lordship involved it is framed as favourable only if both planets also own an angle or trine.
This app's yoga detector also applies a later rule, which its code attributes to Advanced Predictive Astrology's case studies: a lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th forms a Vipareeta Raja Yoga. A 3rd lord in the 8th triggers it when the same planet also owns the 6th, 8th or 12th.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 3rd lord in the 8th sign:
| Ascendant | 3rd lord | Other house it rules | 8th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mercury | 6th (Virgo) | Scorpio | Neutral |
| Taurus | Moon | none | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Gemini | Sun | none | Capricorn | Enemy sign |
| Cancer | Mercury | 12th (Gemini) | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Leo | Venus | 10th (Taurus) | Pisces | Exalted |
| Virgo | Mars | 8th (Aries) | Aries | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Libra | Jupiter | 6th (Pisces) | Taurus | Enemy sign |
| Scorpio | Saturn | 4th (Aquarius) | Gemini | Friendly sign |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | 2nd (Capricorn) | Cancer | Enemy sign |
| Capricorn | Jupiter | 12th (Sagittarius) | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Aquarius | Mars | 10th (Scorpio) | Virgo | Enemy sign |
| Pisces | Venus | 8th (Libra) | Libra | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
For Virgo and Pisces rising the 3rd lord also owns the 8th (Mars for Virgo, Venus for Pisces), so it sits in its own sign or moolatrikona there, and the engine reports Sarala Yoga. For Aries and Libra rising the 3rd lord also owns the 6th, and for Cancer and Capricorn the 12th; in the 8th those trigger Harsha and Vimala Yoga respectively. Leo rising gives exaltation: Venus, lord of the 3rd and 10th, in Pisces. Four rows are enemy signs (Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius), two friendly and three neutral.
Strength changes the reading
With a verse this severe, strength carries more weight than usual: Sl. 145-148 would give a weak 3rd lord only a quarter of Sl. 32 and a strong one the full measure, though a strong lord also meets Ch. 14's exaltation clause. Company matters through Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6, which names Mars specifically. Aspects on the 8th come from the 2nd by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 4th and 12th, Mars from the 5th and 1st, and Saturn from the 6th and 11th. Combustion weakens the lord as usual.
Worked example: Leo rising, Venus exalted in Pisces
The engine's deterministic search returned: 15 February 1985, 19:05 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 15.68. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Leo rising makes Libra the 3rd, so Venus is the 3rd lord; it also owns Taurus, the 10th.
- Venus is in Pisces at 17.46 degrees, Revati pada 1: the 8th house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine marks it Exalted.
- Mars is also in Pisces, at 15.99, less than two degrees from Venus.
- The 8th lord, Jupiter, is debilitated in Capricorn in the 6th, which the engine reports as Sarala Yoga. Nothing other than the nodes aspects the 8th.
This chart meets the exact condition of Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6's unfavourable clause: the 3rd lord and Mars together in the 8th. It also meets the exaltation clause of the favourable one, since Venus is exalted. BPHS does not say which prevails; Ch. 14 Sl. 15 says the effects on siblings are to be declared "after assessing the strength and weakness" of such yogas. Venus is at full strength by dignity, so by Sl. 145-148 Sl. 32 would apply in full measure too, alongside the 10th-house lordship Venus also carries. The engine's Sarala flag concerns Jupiter, not Venus. This page lays out the conflicting rules; it does not settle them, and it makes no statement about any person. One more structural fact: from the 8th, Venus aspects the 2nd by the seventh-house aspect, so the 3rd lord here looks at the house of family and wealth.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 3rd lord in the 8th house in 270, or 9.0%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 8th lord in the 3rd house. The adjacent placements are the 3rd lord in the 7th and the 3rd lord in the 9th; the other dusthanas are the 6th and the 12th. For the engine's Vipareeta flags see Sarala Yoga. For the worked example's planet see Venus in the 8th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
