In short
The 3rd lord in the 7th house moves the ruler of courage, effort and siblings into the angle of partnership, trade and dealings with others. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 31 reads it as a life of service to those in authority, with an unhappy boyhood and a happy end of life. Because the 7th is an angle, Ch. 14 also counts it among the placements that favour siblings.
What the placement means
The 3rd house lord rules courage, effort, siblings, attendants and short journeys. In the 7th house it sits in the angle of the spouse, partners, trade, travel and the other party in any dealing. The house of one's own initiative places its lord where the chart reads other people.
The 7th is a Kendra, and it is the 5th house counted from the 3rd. Neither fact is the reason BPHS gives for its reading, but the angle matters for Ch. 14's sibling rule, and the classical verse for this placement is about the shape of a working life rather than about partners.
The two houses involved
The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction and journeys in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4.
The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is the wife, travel, trade, loss of sight and death in Ch. 11 Sl. 8. The house pages cover both.
What BPHS says about the 3rd lord in the 7th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 31 says that with the 3rd lord in the 7th the native "will be interested in serving the king", will not be happy during boyhood, and will be happy at the end of his life. bphs-alt.txt has the same text.
The verse has two features unusual in the chapter. It names a kind of work, service to a ruler, which can be read as the 3rd house's attendants (Ch. 11 lists "servants" among its significations) turned outward toward the 7th's other party; the text itself does not explain the link. And it gives a time shape, a hard youth and a good old age, a pattern Ch. 24 also uses for the 2nd lord in the 9th. Neither clause is a forecast; they are the text's statements, reported as such.
BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 reads the placement from the siblings' side: happiness through siblings follows if Mars or the 3rd lord is in an angle, and the 7th is an angle. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 keeps its standing caution that the owner of the 3rd gives evil effects. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 asks for both of the planet's lordships to be read and scaled by strength. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.
Set beside the reverse verse
The reverse, the 7th lord in the 3rd (Ch. 24 Sl. 75), is about children: it speaks of difficulty over sons and the possibility of a daughter, a statement this page summarises without forecasting anything. The two verses have nothing in common in content. Sl. 31 reads the 3rd lord's move to the 7th as a career pattern; Sl. 75 reads the 7th lord's move to the 3rd in terms of children, and gives no reason for that focus; this page does not invent one. What the pair shows is that BPHS does not treat a two-house link as symmetrical.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 3rd lord in the 7th sign:
| Ascendant | 3rd lord | Other house it rules | 7th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mercury | 6th (Virgo) | Libra | Friendly sign |
| Taurus | Moon | none | Scorpio | Debilitated |
| Gemini | Sun | none | Sagittarius | Friendly sign |
| Cancer | Mercury | 12th (Gemini) | Capricorn | Neutral |
| Leo | Venus | 10th (Taurus) | Aquarius | Friendly sign |
| Virgo | Mars | 8th (Aries) | Pisces | Friendly sign |
| Libra | Jupiter | 6th (Pisces) | Aries | Friendly sign |
| Scorpio | Saturn | 4th (Aquarius) | Taurus | Friendly sign |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | 2nd (Capricorn) | Gemini | Friendly sign |
| Capricorn | Jupiter | 12th (Sagittarius) | Cancer | Exalted |
| Aquarius | Mars | 10th (Scorpio) | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Pisces | Venus | 8th (Libra) | Virgo | Debilitated |
This is a strong table by sign. Eight Ascendants give a friendly sign, and Capricorn rising gives exaltation: Jupiter, lord of the 3rd and 12th, in Cancer. Two give debilitation: Taurus rising (the Moon in Scorpio) and Pisces rising (Venus, lord of the 3rd and 8th, in Virgo). Cancer rising alone is neutral.
The second lordships colour the 7th. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 3rd lord also owns the 10th, putting two angle-related lordships in an angle; for Scorpio, the 4th; for Aries and Libra, the 6th; for Virgo and Pisces, the 8th; for Cancer and Capricorn, the 12th; for Sagittarius, the 2nd, so the 2nd and 3rd lordships arrive in the 7th together. Taurus and Gemini rising give luminaries (the Moon, the Sun), which own nothing else.
Because Sl. 145-148 asks for both lordships to be read, each of those second houses brings its own Ch. 24 verse for the 7th into play alongside Sl. 31. Summarised: for Leo and Aquarius rising, Sl. 115 (the 10th lord in the 7th) speaks of happiness through the spouse and an intelligent, truthful, religious native; for Scorpio, Sl. 43 (the 4th lord in the 7th) speaks of high education and loss of patrimony; for Aries and Libra, Sl. 67 (the 6th lord in the 7th) speaks of little happiness in marriage alongside fame and wealth; for Virgo and Pisces, Sl. 91 (the 8th lord in the 7th) speaks of two marriages and of business setbacks when a malefic joins; for Cancer and Capricorn, Sl. 139 (the 12th lord in the 7th) speaks of expense through the spouse; for Sagittarius, Sl. 19 (the 2nd lord in the 7th). Contrary indications cancel, by the text's own rule. None of these is a forecast; together they show how much the Ascendant changes what "the 3rd lord in the 7th" carries.
Strength changes the reading
Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 31. Aspects on the 7th come from the 1st by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 3rd and 11th, Mars from the 4th and 12th, and Saturn from the 5th and 10th. A 3rd lord in the 7th always aspects the Lagna in return. For the spouse, BPHS Ch. 7 points to the Navamsa, so a reading of the 7th from the birth chart alone is incomplete on its own terms.
Worked example: Cancer rising, Mercury combust in Capricorn
The engine's deterministic search returned: 6 February 1985, 16:28 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Cancer 4.31. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Cancer rising makes Virgo the 3rd, so Mercury is the 3rd lord. Mercury also owns Gemini, the 12th.
- Mercury is in Capricorn at 14.66 degrees, Shravana pada 2: the 7th house. Not retrograde; the engine marks it combust, with dignity "Friendly sign".
- The Sun (23.96) and a debilitated Jupiter (6.33) share Capricorn with it.
- The 7th lord, Saturn, is in Scorpio in the 5th and aspects the 7th by its 3rd-house special aspect.
Mercury here carries two lordships into the 7th, and Ch. 24 has a verse for each. As 3rd lord it falls under Sl. 31 (service, a hard youth, a happy end). As 12th lord it falls under Sl. 139, which reads the 12th lord in the 7th as expenditure on account of the spouse and little conjugal happiness, a statement this page reports without applying it to anyone. Sl. 145-148 says to read the two together. Mercury is combust, the weak side of the strength scale, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 says Mercury takes on the nature of its company: here the Sun (a malefic) and a debilitated Jupiter (a benefic). Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6's angle condition for siblings is met.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 3rd lord in the 7th house in 203, or 6.8%, noticeably below one in twelve. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 7th lord in the 3rd house. The adjacent placements are the 3rd lord in the 6th and the 3rd lord in the 8th; the other angles are covered by the 3rd lord in the 4th and the 3rd lord in the 10th. The Navamsa calculator computes the chart BPHS uses for the spouse. For the worked example's planet see Mercury in the 7th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
