In short

The 3rd lord in the 4th house moves the ruler of courage, effort and siblings into the angle of home, mother, land and contentment. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 28 reads it as happy, wealthy and intelligent, with a clause about a difficult spouse that belongs to the text. Because the 4th is an angle, Ch. 14 also counts this placement among those that favour happiness through siblings.

What the placement means

The 3rd house lord rules courage, effort, siblings and short journeys. In the 4th house it sits in the angle of home, mother, lands, vehicles and inner contentment. Effort comes home: the house of action places its lord in the house of rest.

The 4th is a Kendra, the first angle after the Lagna. For a 3rd lord that matters because BPHS Ch. 14 reads a 3rd lord in an angle as favourable for siblings, even though Ch. 34 treats ownership of the 3rd itself with caution.

The two houses involved

The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction and journeys in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4.

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in Ch. 11 Sl. 5. The house pages cover both lists.

What BPHS says about the 3rd lord in the 4th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 28 says that with the 3rd lord in the 4th the native "will be happy, wealthy and intelligent", and adds that he will acquire a spouse the translation calls wicked. bphs-alt.txt has the same words.

The first three words draw on the 4th: happiness is the 4th's own name (Sukha), and treasure is in its list. The spouse clause is unexplained in the verse; the 4th is not a house of marriage in Ch. 11, though it is the 10th counted from the 7th. This page reports the clause as the text's statement only, not as a prediction about anyone's spouse. For the spouse, BPHS Ch. 7 sends the reader to the Navamsa.

The 3rd-house chapter reads the same placement from the siblings' side. Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 says happiness through siblings follows "if Mangal, or Sahaj's Lord is in an angle", and the 4th is an angle. The 4th-house chapter adds its own condition: Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 says a benefic related to the 4th gives good results for vehicles and comforts, and a malefic the reverse, so the nature of the 3rd lord now matters to the 4th.

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 has two relevant clauses. Owners of the 3rd give evil effects; and benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic results, which bears on Ascendants whose 3rd lord also owns an angle. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 28 by strength and reads both lordships. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, the 4th lord in the 3rd (Ch. 24 Sl. 39), is fuller and almost wholly positive: valorous, with servants, liberal, virtuous, charitable, with self-earned wealth and free from disease. Sl. 39 gives the 4th lord the 3rd house's valour; Sl. 28 gives the 3rd lord the 4th house's happiness. Each lord takes on the host house's signification, which is the pattern Ch. 24 follows most often.

The 3rd lord and the 4th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

Scorpio rising is the special row: Saturn owns both the 3rd (Capricorn) and the 4th (Aquarius), so it is in its own sign or moolatrikona in the 4th, satisfying Ch. 15 Sl. 2's "occupied by its Lord" condition as well. Libra rising gives the one debilitation: Jupiter, lord of the 3rd and 6th, in Capricorn. Aries rising puts Mercury in an enemy's sign, Cancer. Five rows are friendly and four neutral.

The second lordships colour the 4th. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 3rd lord also owns the 10th, putting two angle-linked lordships in an angle; for Aries and Libra it owns the 6th; for Virgo and Pisces the 8th; for Cancer and Capricorn the 12th; for Sagittarius the 2nd. Taurus and Gemini rising give luminaries, the Moon in Leo and the Sun in Virgo.

Sorting the rows by the planet's nature shows where Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 will read the 4th favourably and where not. A natural benefic arrives in the 4th for Aries and Cancer rising (Mercury), Leo and Pisces (Venus), Libra and Capricorn (Jupiter), and Taurus (the Moon, subject to its phase). A natural malefic arrives for Gemini (the Sun), Virgo and Aquarius (Mars), and Scorpio and Sagittarius (Saturn). For Scorpio rising that malefic is also the 4th house's own lord in its own sign, so Ch. 15 Sl. 2 and Sl. 10-14 point in different directions about the same planet. BPHS states both rules and leaves the weighing to Sl. 145-148.

Strength changes the reading

Strength decides how much of Sl. 28 comes through and how Ch. 14 reads the siblings. The planet's nature decides how Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 reads the 4th: Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon are benefics in the engine's list; the Sun, Mars and Saturn malefics. Aspects on the 4th come from the 10th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 8th and 12th, Mars from the 1st and 9th, and Saturn from the 2nd and 7th. Combustion weakens the lord as usual.

Worked example: Libra rising, Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn

The engine's deterministic search returned: 8 May 1985, 18:38 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Libra 20.31. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Libra rising makes Sagittarius the 3rd, so Jupiter is the 3rd lord. Jupiter also owns Pisces, the 6th.
  • Jupiter is in Capricorn at 22.19 degrees, Shravana pada 4: the 4th house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine marks it Debilitated.
  • The 4th lord, Saturn, is in Scorpio in the 2nd, retrograde and in an enemy's sign, and aspects the 4th by its 3rd-house special aspect.
  • The Lagna lord, Venus, is exalted in Pisces in the 6th; the Sun is exalted in Aries in the 7th.

This chart is the table's weakest row. Jupiter is a 3rd lord in an angle, the Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 condition for happiness through siblings, but debilitated, the low end of Sl. 145-148's scale. It carries both of Ch. 34's difficult ownerships (the 3rd and the 6th). As a natural benefic in the 4th it is a benefic related to the house for Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14, while the house's own lord, Saturn, aspects it from the 2nd. BPHS would read a reduced and mixed share of Sl. 28 here. From the 4th, Jupiter aspects the 8th, 10th and 12th under the engine's rule, so the 3rd lord's gaze falls on the 10th (work) by the seventh-house aspect and on two dusthanas by its special aspects; Ch. 24 does not comment on those aspects.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 3rd lord in the 4th house in 258, or 8.6%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 4th lord in the 3rd house. The adjacent placements are the 3rd lord in the 3rd and the 3rd lord in the 5th; the other angles are covered by the 3rd lord in the 7th and the 3rd lord in the 10th. For the spouse, see the Navamsa calculator. For the worked example's planet see Jupiter in the 4th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
