In short
The 3rd lord in the 3rd house is the ruler of courage, effort and siblings sitting in its own house, so it is always in its own sign or better. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 27 is wholly favourable: happiness through siblings, wealth and sons, cheerfulness. Ch. 14 adds its own sibling rules, which agree for most planets but conflict for Mars, the 3rd lord of Aquarius and Virgo rising.
What the placement means
The 3rd house lord rules courage, effort, siblings, attendants and short journeys. When it sits in the 3rd itself, the house is held by its own ruler. That is the simplest condition BPHS gives for a house to prosper, and Ch. 24's verse for it is entirely positive.
Because the lord is in a sign it owns, it is always in its own sign at least, sometimes in moolatrikona, and for Cancer rising possibly exalted. The questions that remain are which planet it is, what joins it, and what second house it rules.
The house involved
One house is in play. The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction, journeys and the death of parents in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4. It is an upachaya, and BPHS Ch. 14 gives it a chapter of rules, mostly about siblings. The house page covers its full range.
What BPHS says about the 3rd lord in the 3rd
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 27 says that with the 3rd lord in the 3rd the native "will be endowed with happiness through co-born", will have wealth and sons, and will be "cheerful and extremely happy". bphs-alt.txt has the same words. It is the most favourable verse in the 3rd-lord series and one of the few in the chapter that names siblings directly.
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 gives the general principle behind it: a house is strong when connected to its own lord and weak when "not drishtied by its Lord". A lord in its own house is the closest possible connection. Ch. 14 Sl. 1-2 adds a 3rd-house version: good results for the 3rd follow when the 3rd lord together with Mars aspects the 3rd, "alternatively these two Grahas may be in Sahaj itself". The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus add that a strong 3rd lord gives long-lived brothers.
The same chapter also has warnings that apply to particular planets. Ch. 14 Sl. 3 says the 3rd lord and Mars together with a malefic, or in a malefic's sign, destroy siblings. Ch. 14 Sl. 14 says the Sun in the 3rd harms elder siblings, Saturn younger ones, and Mars both. When the 3rd lord is one of those planets, the favourable Sl. 27 and the adverse Ch. 14 Sl. 14 describe the same position. BPHS does not reconcile them; Ch. 14 Sl. 15 and Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 both say to weigh strength. These are classical statements about positions, not predictions about anyone's family.
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 adds the ownership caution: a planet owning the 3rd gives evil effects. In this placement that planet sits at home, so whatever the caution means, it applies most directly here. The Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its dignity for the 3rd lord in its own 3rd sign (sampled at four degrees, hence the multiple labels):
| Ascendant | 3rd lord | Other house it rules | 3rd house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mercury | 6th (Virgo) | Gemini | Own sign |
| Taurus | Moon | none | Cancer | Own sign |
| Gemini | Sun | none | Leo | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Cancer | Mercury | 12th (Gemini) | Virgo | Exalted or Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Leo | Venus | 10th (Taurus) | Libra | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Virgo | Mars | 8th (Aries) | Scorpio | Own sign |
| Libra | Jupiter | 6th (Pisces) | Sagittarius | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Scorpio | Saturn | 4th (Aquarius) | Capricorn | Own sign |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | 2nd (Capricorn) | Aquarius | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Capricorn | Jupiter | 12th (Sagittarius) | Pisces | Own sign |
| Aquarius | Mars | 10th (Scorpio) | Aries | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Pisces | Venus | 8th (Libra) | Taurus | Own sign |
Every row is own sign or better. Cancer rising stands out: Mercury owns the 3rd (Virgo) and the 12th (Gemini), and in Virgo it can be exalted, moolatrikona or own sign by degree. Taurus and Gemini rising give the luminaries in their own signs (the Moon in Cancer, the Sun in Leo).
Sorting by Ch. 14 Sl. 14's three planets: the Sun is the 3rd lord for Gemini rising, Saturn for Scorpio and Sagittarius rising, and Mars for Virgo and Aquarius rising. For those five Ascendants Sl. 27 and Ch. 14 Sl. 14 meet. For Virgo and Aquarius rising there is a further twist, because Ch. 14 Sl. 1-2 praises the 3rd lord and Mars together in the 3rd, and when the 3rd lord is Mars that condition is met by one planet, while Sl. 14 names Mars in the 3rd as adverse for siblings. The same chapter thus reads one position two ways.
Ch. 14 Sl. 3 adds a wrinkle that follows from this placement's geometry. It warns about the 3rd lord and Mars "in a Rasi, owned by a malefic". When the 3rd lord sits in its own sign, the sign it occupies is owned by the 3rd lord itself, so for the five Ascendants whose 3rd lord is a natural malefic (Gemini, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Virgo and Aquarius rising) the planet is, read literally, in a malefic's sign. The verse does not say whether a planet's own sign counts for this purpose, and the corpus offers no commentary that settles it. This page reports the ambiguity rather than resolving it. For the other seven Ascendants the 3rd lord is a benefic or the Moon, and the condition does not arise from the sign alone.
Strength changes the reading
With own-sign dignity guaranteed, the variables are companions, combustion and the second lordship. Ch. 14 Sl. 3 makes malefic company the decisive warning. For Aries and Libra rising the 3rd lord also owns the 6th; for Leo and Aquarius the 10th; for Virgo and Pisces the 8th; for Cancer and Capricorn the 12th; for Scorpio the 4th; for Sagittarius the 2nd. Sl. 145-148 reads each pair together.
Worked example: Aquarius rising, Mars in Aries
The engine's deterministic search returned: 24 March 1985, 05:33 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Aquarius 21.28. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Aquarius rising makes Aries the 3rd, so Mars is the 3rd lord; Mars also owns Scorpio, the 10th.
- Mars is in Aries at 12.73 degrees, Ashwini pada 4: the 3rd house, its own sign. Not retrograde, not combust. At 12.73 it is past the moolatrikona band the engine uses for Mars in Aries, so the label is "Own sign".
- The Moon is also in Aries at 6.81 (Enemy sign in this chart), and Rahu at 27.16.
- Nothing other than the nodes aspects the 3rd. The Lagna lord, Saturn, is retrograde in Scorpio in the 10th, which is Mars's other sign.
This is exactly the case where Ch. 14 disagrees with itself. Mars is both the 3rd lord and Mars, sitting in the 3rd, which Ch. 14 Sl. 1-2 reads favourably and Ch. 14 Sl. 14 adversely for siblings; Ch. 24 Sl. 27 reads the 3rd lord in the 3rd as happiness through siblings. Ch. 14 Sl. 3 adds a condition about malefic company: Rahu, which the engine lists among the malefics, shares the sign. Mars also brings a 10th-house lordship, an angle. BPHS's method for such cases is to weigh strength (Mars in own sign, unafflicted by combustion) and let contrary indications cancel; it gives no worked verdict, and this page does not supply one.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 3rd lord in the 3rd house in 248, or 8.3%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The adjacent placements are the 3rd lord in the 2nd and the 3rd lord in the 4th. The other upachaya cases include the 3rd lord in the 11th. BPHS Ch. 7 reads siblings from the Drekkana, computed by the Drekkana (D3) calculator. For the worked example's planet see Mars in the 3rd house and Mars in Vedic astrology. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign; without a birth time, see when the birth time is unknown.
Questions about the 3rd lord in the 3rd house
- What does BPHS say about the 3rd lord in the 3rd house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 27: happiness through siblings, wealth and sons, cheerfulness and great happiness.
- Is the 3rd lord always strong in its own house?
- It is always in its own sign there. Malefic company, combustion and its second lordship still change how BPHS reads it.
- Why do the texts disagree when the 3rd lord is Mars?
- Ch. 14 Sl. 1-2 praises the 3rd lord with Mars in the 3rd, while Ch. 14 Sl. 14 reads Mars in the 3rd as adverse for siblings. BPHS does not reconcile them; it says to weigh strength.
- Which Ascendant gives the strongest version?
- Cancer rising, where Mercury in Virgo can be exalted. Every Ascendant gives at least own sign.
- How common is it?
- 248 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.3%) in the engine's sample.
