House lords

The 3rd lord placed in the 2nd house: the critical BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 26 verse, how it contrasts with the reverse placement, the 2nd as the 12th from the 3rd, the 12-Ascendant table and an engine-computed Pisces-rising chart with Venus in Aries.

In short

The 3rd lord in the 2nd house moves the ruler of courage, effort and siblings into the house of wealth, family and speech, which is the 12th counted from the 3rd. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 26 is one of the more critical verses of its series: little valour or effort, little happiness, and an eye on what belongs to others. The reverse placement reads almost the opposite way, as valour and wisdom.

What the placement means

The 3rd house lord rules courage, effort and siblings. In the 2nd house it sits in the house of accumulated wealth, family, food and speech. It has moved one sign back, out of the house of action into the house of holding.

Counted from the 3rd house, the 2nd is the 12th, the house of loss relative to the house the planet owns. BPHS uses exactly that counting in Ch. 44, as explained below. Ch. 24 Sl. 26 reads this placement as a loss of the 3rd house's best qualities, though the verse itself does not give the counting as its reason.

The two houses involved

The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction and journeys in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4.

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones in Ch. 11 Sl. 3, and one of the two maraka houses of Ch. 44. The house pages cover both.

What BPHS says about the 3rd lord in the 2nd

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 26 says that with the 3rd lord in the 2nd the native "will be corpulent, devoid of valour, will not make much efforts, be not happy", and will look towards other men's wives and wealth. bphs-alt.txt has the same words.

The verse is the 3rd house turned inside out. Valour and effort, the 3rd's own significations, are both named as missing, and the 2nd's themes appear as appetite: a heavy body (the 2nd is the house of food) and an interest in what belongs to others. It is reported here as the text's characterisation of a type, summarised, not as a statement about any reader.

BPHS gives a structural reason elsewhere why this pair of houses might be read this way. Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 calls the 3rd and 8th the houses of longevity and the 2nd and 7th, "the 12th from each of these", maraka houses. The 2nd is therefore the 12th from the 3rd in the text's own counting. This app makes no longevity judgement and does not apply Ch. 44; the point is only that BPHS itself treats the 2nd as the 3rd's house of loss.

Two more rules apply. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the owner of the 3rd gives evil effects, and that ownership comes with the planet into the 2nd. Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 says a benefic in the 2nd gives wealth while a malefic destroys it, so the nature of the 3rd lord affects the 2nd house directly. Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 reads the 3rd lord in an angle, trine, exaltation or friendly division as good for siblings; the 2nd is not an angle or trine, so only dignity can meet that rule here. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 26 by strength. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse placement, the 2nd lord in the 3rd (Ch. 24 Sl. 15), is almost the mirror image: with a benefic, "valorous, wise, virtuous"; with a malefic, heterodox. Where Sl. 15 brings wealth's lord into the house of courage and finds valour, Sl. 26 brings courage's lord into the house of wealth and finds valour missing. The comparison shows how much BPHS reads from the direction of travel between two houses, not just from the pair.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 3rd lord in the 2nd sign:

The 3rd lord and the 2nd-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

Sagittarius rising is the special row: Saturn owns both the 2nd (Capricorn) and the 3rd (Aquarius), so it is in its own sign in the 2nd. Leo rising gives the one debilitation: Venus, lord of the 3rd and 10th, in Virgo. Six rows give a friendly sign and four a neutral one, so by dignity this is a reasonably good table, which Sl. 145-148 would weigh against the verse's critical tone.

The second lordships are mixed. For Aries and Libra rising the 3rd lord also owns the 6th; for Virgo and Pisces, the 8th (so the lord of both of Ch. 44's longevity houses sits in a maraka house); for Cancer and Capricorn, the 12th; for Leo and Aquarius, the 10th; for Scorpio, the 4th. Taurus and Gemini rising give luminaries (the Moon, the Sun), which own nothing else.

Sagittarius rising shows how two rules from the same chapter can land on one planet. Saturn there is the 2nd lord in the 2nd, which Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 names first among the conditions that promote wealth. It is also a natural malefic in the 2nd, which the same verse says destroys wealth. And it is the 3rd lord, carrying Ch. 34's caution about 3rd-house ownership. BPHS's own instruction in Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148, to weigh strength and let contrary indications cancel, is the method for such a case; the text does not give a worked answer. Gemini rising has a smaller version of the same tension: the Sun, a malefic, is the 3rd lord in a friendly sign in the 2nd.

Strength changes the reading

Dignity, combustion and company decide how much of Sl. 26 applies. The planet's nature matters twice: once for Sl. 26 and once for Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2, which reads benefics in the 2nd as adding wealth. Ch. 13 Sl. 13 reads malefics with the 2nd as untruthful speech. Aspects on the 2nd come from the 8th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 10th and 6th, Mars from the 11th and 7th, and Saturn from the 12th and 5th.

Worked example: Pisces rising, Venus in Aries

The engine's deterministic search returned: 5 June 1985, 02:29 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Pisces 27.77. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Pisces rising makes Taurus the 3rd, so Venus is the 3rd lord. Venus also owns Libra, the 8th.
  • Venus is in Aries at 5.02 degrees, Ashwini pada 2: the 2nd house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine gives "Friendly sign".
  • Rahu is in Aries too, at 23.30.
  • Saturn, exalted and retrograde in Libra in the 8th, aspects the 2nd by the seventh-house aspect. The 2nd lord, Mars, is in Gemini in the 4th and combust.

Venus here is the case flagged above: the lord of the 3rd and 8th, the two houses Ch. 44 calls houses of longevity, sitting in the 2nd. This page makes no reading of that; it notes it because the engine's lordship arithmetic makes it visible. For Sl. 26, Venus is friendly by chart and not combust, so the text's scale would expect a moderate rather than full share. For Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2, a natural benefic now occupies the 2nd, which that verse reads as adding wealth, while the 2nd also receives a malefic aspect from Saturn and holds Rahu.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 3rd lord in the 2nd house in 262, or 8.7%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 2nd lord in the 3rd house. The adjacent placements are the 3rd lord in the 1st and the 3rd lord in the 3rd. For the worked example's planet see Venus in the 2nd house and Venus in Vedic astrology. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 3rd lord in the 2nd house

What does BPHS say about the 3rd lord in the 2nd house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 26: corpulent, lacking valour and effort, not happy, and interested in others' spouses and wealth. This page reports that as the text's characterisation only.
Why is this verse so critical?
The text gives no reason. One structural fact is that the 2nd is the 12th house counted from the 3rd, and BPHS Ch. 44 itself counts the 2nd as the 12th from the 3rd.
Does it affect wealth?
BPHS Ch. 13 reads a benefic in the 2nd as adding wealth and a malefic as destroying it, so the nature of the 3rd lord matters. This app does not forecast wealth.
Which Ascendant gives the strongest version?
Sagittarius rising, where Saturn owns both the 2nd and 3rd and sits in its own sign. Leo rising gives a debilitated Venus.
How common is it?
262 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.7%) in the engine's sample.
