In short
The 2nd lord in the 3rd house moves the ruler of wealth, family and speech into the house of courage, effort and siblings. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 15 splits on company: related to a benefic, the native is valorous, wise, virtuous, lustful and miserly; related to a malefic, the text calls him heterodox. The planet is debilitated here for Scorpio rising and in its own sign for Sagittarius rising.
What the placement means
The 2nd house lord carries wealth, family and speech. Moved one sign forward into the 3rd, it enters the house of courage, personal effort, younger siblings, attendants and short journeys. The placement ties resources to initiative: what the family holds meets what the person does with their own hands.
The 3rd is an upachaya, a house of growth, and neither an angle, a trine nor a dusthana. That puts it outside both lists in BPHS Ch. 13's main wealth rule for the 2nd lord, so the texts read this placement through company rather than through house rank.
The two houses involved
The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and stones in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3.
The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction and journeys in Ch. 11 Sl. 4. Each house page covers its significations in full.
What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 3rd
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 15 has two branches. If the 2nd lord in the 3rd is related to a benefic, the native "will be valorous, wise, virtuous, lustful and miserly". If it is related to a malefic, "the native will be a heterodox". bphs-alt.txt has the same text.
The benefic branch blends the two houses. Valour is the 3rd's first signification; miserliness is the 2nd house's wealth turned inward, held rather than spent. "Wise" and "virtuous" are general. The malefic branch is a single word about religious conformity, reported here as the text's idiom; it is not a judgement this app makes about anyone's beliefs. "Related" in BPHS usually covers conjunction and aspect, so both branches depend on what joins or aspects the 2nd lord.
BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 promotes wealth when the 2nd lord is in the 2nd, an angle or a trine, and expects decline when it is in the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 3rd is in neither list, so the chapter's main wealth rule is silent on this placement. Ch. 13 Sl. 13 still applies: malefics with the 2nd lord bring untruthful speech. And Ch. 14 Sl. 1 says a benefic in or aspecting the 3rd gives siblings and courage, which matters when the 2nd lord is itself a benefic arriving in the 3rd.
Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales the verse by strength and reads both lordships of the planet together. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no verse of their own for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 2nd lord in the 3rd sign:
| Ascendant | 2nd lord | Other house it rules | 3rd house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Venus | 7th (Libra) | Gemini | Friendly sign |
| Taurus | Mercury | 5th (Virgo) | Cancer | Enemy sign |
| Gemini | Moon | none | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Cancer | Sun | none | Virgo | Neutral |
| Leo | Mercury | 11th (Gemini) | Libra | Friendly sign |
| Virgo | Venus | 9th (Taurus) | Scorpio | Neutral |
| Libra | Mars | 7th (Aries) | Sagittarius | Friendly sign |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | 5th (Pisces) | Capricorn | Debilitated |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | 3rd (Aquarius) | Aquarius | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 1st (Capricorn) | Pisces | Neutral |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | 11th (Sagittarius) | Aries | Friendly sign |
| Pisces | Mars | 9th (Scorpio) | Taurus | Neutral |
Sagittarius rising is the strong row: Saturn owns both the 2nd (Capricorn) and the 3rd (Aquarius), so in Aquarius it is in its own sign or moolatrikona. Scorpio rising is the weak row: Jupiter, lord of the 2nd and 5th, is debilitated in Capricorn. Taurus rising puts Mercury in an enemy's sign, Cancer. Five rows are friendly and four neutral.
Sorting by nature, as Sl. 15 implicitly asks: the 2nd lord is a natural benefic for Aries and Virgo rising (Venus), Scorpio and Aquarius (Jupiter), Taurus and Leo (Mercury, conditionally) and Gemini (the Moon, by phase). It is a natural malefic for Cancer (the Sun), Libra and Pisces (Mars), and Sagittarius and Capricorn (Saturn). A benefic 2nd lord does not by itself satisfy the benefic branch, which asks for a relation to a benefic, but it does mean a benefic is now in the 3rd for Ch. 14 Sl. 1.
Strength changes the reading
The first test is company: conjunctions in the 3rd and aspects on it. Planets in the 9th aspect the 3rd by the seventh-house aspect; Jupiter also from the 7th and 11th; Mars from the 8th and 12th; Saturn from the 1st and 6th. The engine's benefics are Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 qualifies Mercury and the Moon. If a chart has both kinds of relation, Sl. 15 does not say which branch wins, and Sl. 145-148's cancellation rule is the text's own method.
The second test is dignity and the second lordship. For Leo and Aquarius rising, the 2nd lord also owns the 11th, so both wealth lordships move into the 3rd together; for Aries and Libra it also owns the 7th; for Taurus and Scorpio the 5th; for Virgo and Pisces the 9th. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 calls trine lordships auspicious and 3rd/6th/11th ownership troublesome, which is relevant for Sagittarius rising, where the planet owns the 3rd itself.
The malefic 2nd lords meet one more verse when they reach the 3rd. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 14 names three planets whose presence in the 3rd it reads as adverse for siblings: the Sun for elder ones, Saturn for younger ones, Mars for both. Those are exactly the 2nd lords of Cancer rising (the Sun), Sagittarius and Capricorn rising (Saturn), and Libra and Pisces rising (Mars). For those five Ascendants the 2nd lord in the 3rd brings Sl. 15 and Ch. 14 Sl. 14 to bear on the same planet, one about the native's temperament and one about siblings. Both are reported as classical rules about positions. For Sagittarius rising the tension is sharpest, because Saturn there is also the 3rd lord occupying its own house, which the general principle of Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 (a house fares well when connected to its own lord) counts in the house's favour.
Worked example: Scorpio rising, Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn
The engine's deterministic search returned: 6 March 1985, 00:19 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 9.38. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Scorpio rising makes Sagittarius the 2nd, so Jupiter is the 2nd lord; it also owns Pisces, the 5th.
- Jupiter is in Capricorn at 12.34 degrees, Shravana pada 1: the 3rd house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine marks it Debilitated.
- The 3rd house holds no other planet. Saturn, in Scorpio in the 1st and in an enemy's sign, aspects the 3rd by its 3rd-house special aspect. Saturn is also the 3rd lord for this Ascendant, since it owns Capricorn.
- Venus (exalted), Mars and a debilitated, combust Mercury sit together in Pisces, the 5th.
Against Sl. 15 the chart falls on the malefic branch: the only relation to the 2nd lord is Saturn's aspect, and Saturn is a natural malefic. The fact that Saturn is also the 3rd lord, aspecting its own house, is something Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 counts in the house's favour, so the same aspect is read one way for the 2nd lord and another way for the 3rd house. Jupiter's debilitation puts it at the low end of Sl. 145-148's scale, and as a benefic in the 3rd it is still the case Ch. 14 Sl. 1 describes, weakly placed.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 3rd house in 277, or 9.2%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 3rd lord in the 2nd house (Sl. 26), is one of the more critical verses in the 3rd-lord series. The adjacent placements are the 2nd lord in the 2nd and the 2nd lord in the 4th. BPHS Ch. 7 reads siblings from the Drekkana, computed by the Drekkana (D3) calculator. For the worked example's planet see Jupiter in the 3rd house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
Questions about the 2nd lord in the 3rd house
- What does BPHS say about the 2nd lord in the 3rd house?
