In short

The 2nd lord in the 2nd house is the ruler of wealth, family and speech sitting in its own house, so it is always in its own sign or better. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 14 reads it as wealthy and proud, with lines about several wives and no children that belong to the text. Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 names this placement first among the conditions that promote wealth.

What the placement means

The 2nd house lord is the planet owning the sign after the Ascendant. When it sits in that same sign, the house of wealth, family, food and speech is occupied by its own ruler. The house is held by its own lord, the simplest of all the conditions BPHS gives for a house to prosper.

Like every lord-in-own-house placement, this one guarantees dignity: the planet is in its own sign at least, and for several Ascendants in moolatrikona or, for Leo rising, possibly exalted. What varies is the planet's nature and the second house it rules.

The house involved

Only one house is in play. The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is, in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3, the house of wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones, and also of death and enemies, which is why Ch. 44 lists it among the maraka houses. Ch. 13 gives its rules; the house page sets out its significations.

What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 2nd

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 14 says that with the 2nd lord in the 2nd the native "will be wealthy, proud", will have two or more wives, and will be bereft of progeny. bphs-alt.txt has the same wording.

The first two words are the house's own themes made strong: wealth, and the pride that goes with it. The marriage and progeny clauses are reported here as the text's statements, summarised, and not as forecasts; this app does not predict children or marriages from one placement. The progeny clause is also one the chapter itself would qualify, because Sl. 145-148 says that when a planet rules two houses whose results contradict each other, the contrary results cancel. For two Ascendants (Taurus and Scorpio rising, see below) the 2nd lord also rules the 5th, the house of children.

The 2nd-house chapter is more direct. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 opens: "If the Lord of Dhan is in Dhan", or in an angle or trine, "he will promote one's wealth". Sl. 3 names a special case: one will be wealthy if Jupiter is in the 2nd as the 2nd lord, or with Mars. Sl. 10 says a 2nd lord in its own sign or exalted makes the native look after his people, help others and become famous. Every row of this placement satisfies the own-sign condition of Sl. 10. Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 adds the general principle that a house prospers when its lord is connected to it.

The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no verse of their own for this placement.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's lordship arithmetic, with the dignity its rule returns for the planet in its own 2nd sign (sampled at four degrees, hence the multiple labels):

The 2nd lord and the 2nd-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

Every row is own sign or better. Leo rising stands out because Mercury in Virgo can be exalted at low degrees, then moolatrikona, then own sign. Gemini and Cancer rising give the luminaries, which own nothing else. Two rows match Ch. 13 Sl. 3 exactly: Scorpio rising (Jupiter in Sagittarius) and Aquarius rising (Jupiter in Pisces), where Jupiter is the 2nd lord in the 2nd.

The second lordships are what separate the rows. Taurus and Scorpio rising give a 2nd lord that also owns the 5th; Virgo and Pisces rising, the 9th; Aries and Libra, the 7th (the other maraka house); Leo and Aquarius, the 11th, so one planet owns both wealth houses; Sagittarius the 3rd; Capricorn the 1st, so the Lagna lord is in the 2nd as well.

Two of those rows bring a second Ch. 24 verse into play through the same planet. For Capricorn rising, Saturn in Aquarius is at once the 2nd lord in the 2nd (Sl. 14) and the Lagna lord in the 2nd (Sl. 2, which reads gain, learning and honour), and Sl. 145-148 asks for both to be read. For Leo and Aquarius rising, the 2nd lord also owns the 11th, so one planet holds both of the houses BPHS Ch. 13 ties to wealth; that same planet sitting in the 2nd is the configuration in which Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7's combustion test applies to a single body rather than two. These overlaps are why this page lists the second lordship for every Ascendant rather than treating the 2nd lord as one undifferentiated planet.

Strength changes the reading

With dignity guaranteed, the conditions that change the reading are combustion and company. Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 reads both the 2nd and 11th lords combust, or with malefics, as a sign of penury; Sl. 13 reads malefics with the 2nd house and its lord as untruthful speech. Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 also distinguishes the planet's nature: a benefic in the 2nd gives wealth, a malefic destroys it. A malefic 2nd lord in its own sign (Mars for Libra and Pisces rising, Saturn for Sagittarius and Capricorn, the Sun for Cancer) is therefore both the house's guardian and, by Ch. 13's other rule, a malefic in the house.

Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales the result: full for a strong planet, half for a middling one, a quarter for a weak one. An own-sign planet starts near the top of that scale, so for this placement the verse's mixed list is more likely than usual to be read in full by the text's own logic.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, Jupiter in Sagittarius

The engine's deterministic search returned: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 28.81. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Scorpio rising makes Sagittarius the 2nd, so Jupiter is the 2nd lord. Jupiter also owns Pisces, the 5th.
  • Jupiter is in Sagittarius at 27.83 degrees, Uttara Ashadha pada 1: the 2nd house, its own sign. The engine marks it combust.
  • The Sun is in Sagittarius at 16.89, also in the 2nd; it is the reason Jupiter is combust.
  • The 11th lord, Mercury, is in Scorpio in the 1st and is not combust. No graha other than the nodes aspects the 2nd.

This is the exact case of Ch. 13 Sl. 3, Jupiter in the 2nd as the 2nd lord, and it meets the own-sign condition of Sl. 10. Two factors pull the other way. Jupiter is combust, one of Ch. 12's weakening conditions and half of Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7's penury condition; the other half fails, because the 11th lord Mercury is not combust. And the Sun, a malefic, shares the 2nd. Jupiter also owns the 5th, so Sl. 14's progeny clause meets a contrary 5th lordship in the same planet, the case Sl. 145-148 says cancels.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 2nd house in 222, or 7.4%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The adjacent placements are the 2nd lord in the 1st and the 2nd lord in the 3rd. The other wealth house appears in the 2nd lord in the 11th. Wealth combinations as a class are under dhana yoga, and the 2nd house's divisional chart, the Hora, which BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to wealth, is computed by the Hora (D2) calculator. For the worked example's planet see Jupiter in the 2nd house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 2nd lord in the 2nd house

What does BPHS say about the 2nd lord in the 2nd house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 14: wealthy and proud, with lines about several wives and no progeny. Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 separately says a 2nd lord in the 2nd promotes wealth.
Does it mean no children?
Sl. 14 contains that line, reported here as the text's claim only. BPHS itself says contrary lordships cancel, and for Taurus and Scorpio rising the same planet rules the 5th. This app does not forecast children.
Is the 2nd lord always strong in the 2nd?
It is always in its own sign there. Combustion, malefic company and the planet's nature still change how BPHS reads it.
Which Ascendants match Ch. 13 Sl. 3?
Scorpio and Aquarius rising, where Jupiter is the 2nd lord sitting in the 2nd.
How common is it?
222 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (7.4%) in the engine's sample.
