House lords

The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 1st: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 13, the Ch. 13 rule that a 2nd lord in an angle or trine promotes wealth, the maraka question, the 12-Ascendant table and an engine-computed Aquarius-rising chart with four planets in the Lagna.

In short

The 2nd lord in the 1st house brings the ruler of wealth, family and speech into the Ascendant. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 13 reads it as sons and wealth, but also a hard-hearted, lustful person at odds with the family who works for others. Ch. 13 adds that a 2nd lord in an angle or trine promotes wealth, and the Lagna counts as both.

What the placement means

The 2nd house lord is the planet ruling the sign after the Ascendant, and it carries the 2nd house's affairs (wealth, family, food, speech) wherever it goes. Placed in the 1st, it brings those affairs into the house of the self: resources and family matters become part of the person's own make-up.

The move is one sign backwards, from the 2nd to the 1st. The 1st counts as both a Kendra and a trikona, which matters because BPHS's main wealth rule for the 2nd lord asks for exactly those houses.

The two houses involved

The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is, in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3, the house of wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones, and also of death and enemies. Ch. 13 gives its rules.

The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body, intellect, vigour and nature (Ch. 11 Sl. 2). The house pages carry the full lists.

What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 1st

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 13 opens the 2nd-lord series: with the 2nd lord in the Lagna the native "will be endowed with sons and wealth", will be "inimical to his family", lustful and hard-hearted, and "will do others' jobs". bphs-alt.txt has the same text.

The verse is mixed in a specific way. Its gains (children, wealth) come from the 2nd house's side; its frictions are about the family, which is also a 2nd-house matter. Read together, the verse places the family's resources with the person while describing the person as at odds with the family itself. The clause that he "will do others' jobs" is the most concrete and sits oddly with the wealth clause; the text does not reconcile them, and this page does not either. The harsher adjectives are reported as the text's claims about a type, not about any reader.

The 2nd-house chapter is more straightforwardly favourable. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 says that if the 2nd lord is in the 2nd, "or is in an angle, or in trine, he will promote one's wealth", while in the 6th, 8th or 12th wealth declines. The Lagna satisfies the angle and trine conditions at once. Ch. 13 Sl. 10 adds that a 2nd lord in its own sign or exalted makes the native look after his people, help others and become famous, and Sl. 12 associates a strong 2nd lord with beautiful eyes (a classical association, not a medical statement).

The 2nd lord is also one of the marakas of BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5, which the text uses in timing the end of life. This app makes no longevity judgement and does not apply that chapter; it is mentioned because readers often ask whether a maraka in the Lagna is a concern. Ch. 24 Sl. 13 itself says nothing about it. Sl. 145-148 then scales whatever Sl. 13 says by the planet's strength. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no verse of their own for this placement.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The table gives the engine's lordship arithmetic: which planet owns the 2nd for each rising sign, which other house it owns, and its sign-only dignity in the rising sign.

The 2nd lord and the 1st-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

Capricorn rising is the case where the 2nd lord and the Lagna lord are the same planet: Saturn owns Capricorn and Aquarius, so it is in its own sign in the Lagna. Virgo rising is the weak case: Venus, lord of the 2nd and 9th, is debilitated in Virgo. Six Ascendants give a friendly sign and four a neutral one. The "other house" column is unusually varied: for Taurus and Scorpio rising the 2nd lord also owns the 5th, for Virgo and Pisces the 9th, so for those four the planet carries a trine lordship along with the 2nd.

Strength changes the reading

Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 also says a benefic in the 2nd gives wealth while a malefic destroys it; when the 2nd lord leaves the 2nd for the Lagna, what remains in the 2nd still matters. Ch. 13 Sl. 13 adds that malefics with the 2nd lord make one untruthful. Combustion is the other condition to check: Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 says penury follows if the lords of the 2nd and 11th are both combust or with malefics.

The four Ascendants whose 2nd lord also rules a trine (Taurus and Scorpio with the 5th, Virgo and Pisces with the 9th) are the ones Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 would read most kindly, since it says trine lords give auspicious results; Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 says both lordships are read together. For Aries and Libra the 2nd lord also owns the 7th, the other maraka house; for Leo and Aquarius it also owns the 11th; for Sagittarius the 3rd.

Ch. 13 has a second rule that starts from exactly this placement. Sl. 5 says that if the 2nd lord is in an angle while the 11th lord is in a trine from it, or the 2nd lord is aspected by or joined with Jupiter and Venus, the native will be wealthy. With the 2nd lord in the Lagna, the angle condition is met; the trines from the Lagna are the 1st, 5th and 9th, so the reader then checks where the 11th lord sits and whether Jupiter and Venus touch the 2nd lord. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 2nd lord and the 11th lord are the same planet (Mercury for Leo, Jupiter for Aquarius), which turns the rule into a statement about a single planet.

Worked example: Aquarius rising, Jupiter in Aquarius

The engine's deterministic search returned: 24 February 1986, 06:22 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Aquarius 0.3. It can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator.

  • Aquarius rising makes Pisces the 2nd sign, so Jupiter is the 2nd lord; Jupiter also owns Sagittarius, the 11th.
  • Jupiter is in Aquarius at 7.21 degrees, Shatabhisha pada 1: the 1st house. The engine marks it combust, with dignity "Friendly sign".
  • The Lagna is crowded: the Sun (11.46), Venus (20.00, also combust) and Mercury (28.46) are all in Aquarius with Jupiter.
  • The Moon in Leo (the 7th) aspects the Lagna, and Mars in its own sign Scorpio (the 10th) aspects it by its 4th-house special aspect. The Lagna lord, Saturn, is in Scorpio in the 10th, in an enemy's sign.

This chart puts a single planet in charge of both wealth houses: Jupiter owns the 2nd and the 11th, and it sits in the Lagna, the angle-and-trine Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 names. Against that, Jupiter is combust, and Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 singles out combustion of the 2nd and 11th lords as a condition for poverty. Here both lordships belong to one combust planet, so that verse's condition is met in an unusual form. The Sun, a malefic, is joined with it. Ch. 13 Sl. 5 is partly in play too: the 2nd lord is in an angle and joined by Venus, and it is itself Jupiter. Under Sl. 145-148 the outcome is a reduced and mixed share of Sl. 13; BPHS gives no single verdict, and this page does not supply one.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 1st house in 273, or 9.1%. That is a property of the sampled moments, not of people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 1st lord in the 2nd house (Sl. 2), is wholly favourable. If both occur together, the 1st and 2nd lords have exchanged signs, a parivartana. Next in the series are the 2nd lord in the 2nd and the 2nd lord in the 12th. For wealth combinations as a class see dhana yoga; for the worked example's planet, Jupiter in the 1st house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 2nd lord in the 1st house

What does BPHS say about the 2nd lord in the 1st house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 13: sons and wealth, but hostility to the family, a lustful and hard-hearted nature, and working for others. Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 separately says a 2nd lord in an angle or trine promotes wealth.
Is a maraka in the Lagna a concern?
BPHS Ch. 44 lists the 2nd lord among the marakas used for timing. This app does not compute longevity and does not read it from one placement.
Which Ascendant gives the strongest version?
Capricorn rising, where Saturn owns both the 1st and 2nd and sits in its own sign. Virgo rising gives the weakest, with Venus debilitated.
Does it mean I will be rich?
BPHS names wealth in both Ch. 24 Sl. 13 and Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2. Those are rules about positions, scaled by strength; this app does not forecast anyone's wealth.
How common is it?
273 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (9.1%) in the engine's sample.
