In short
The 1st lord in the 2nd house is the ruler of the rising sign placed in the next sign, the house of wealth, family and speech. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 2 reads it as a gainful, scholarly, happy, religious and honoured person, with a line about many wives that belongs to the text. Its strength varies widely: Capricorn rising puts Saturn in its moolatrikona there, Sagittarius rising puts Jupiter in debilitation.
What the placement means
The planet ruling the rising sign is the chart's stand-in for the person. When that planet, the 1st house lord, occupies the sign immediately after the Ascendant, it sits in the 2nd house, which the texts read for wealth, family, food and speech. The placement links the self to what the self accumulates and says.
Because the 2nd is only one sign on from the 1st, the lord here has just crossed out of its own house. For most Ascendants that means it is no longer in its own sign; whether it lands with a friend, a neutral or an enemy depends entirely on which sign follows the rising one.
The two houses involved
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body, appearance, temperament and vigour in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2. Its lord carries those themes wherever it goes, which is why Ch. 24 starts every one of its first twelve verses with the person's own condition.
The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) covers, in Ch. 11 Sl. 3, wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones, and also death and enemies. That last pair is why Ch. 44 counts the 2nd among the maraka houses. The house page lays all of this out; what matters here is that the lord of the self is placed in a house the texts value for resources and also list among the houses of death.
What BPHS says about the Lagna lord in the 2nd
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 2 is short: if the Lagna lord is in the 2nd, the native "will be gainful, scholarly, happy", endowed with good qualities, religious and honourable, and will have many wives. bphs-alt.txt has the same words. Unlike Sl. 6, 7 or 12, it attaches no condition about benefics or malefics; it is one of the plainly favourable verses in the first group of twelve.
Most of the verse maps onto the 2nd house's own significations. "Gainful" is wealth; "scholarly" sits beside Ch. 13 Sl. 13, which ties the 2nd and its lord to truthful or untruthful speech; "honourable" and "religious" describe the person's standing within a family and community. The many-wives clause recurs throughout this chapter for several houses. This app quotes it as the text's claim, written for a male reader, and makes no prediction about marriages from it.
The maraka question deserves a sentence because readers often ask it. Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 names the 2nd and 7th as maraka houses and the lords of those houses, and malefics in or joined with them, as marakas. It does not say that the Lagna lord becomes a maraka by sitting in the 2nd, and Ch. 24 Sl. 2 reads the placement favourably. The corpus does not support turning this placement into a statement about longevity.
Two general rules shape the verse. Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 says a benefic in the 2nd gives wealth while a malefic there destroys it, so the nature of the Lagna lord itself matters to the money side of Sl. 2. And Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 says the stated results arrive in full, half or quarter measure according to the planet's strength, with a second lordship read alongside. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus do not add a verse of their own for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The table is the engine's own lordship arithmetic. The dignity column is what the engine's rule returns for that planet in the 2nd sign with no chart supplied, so it uses natural friendships only.
| Ascendant | 1st lord | Other house it rules | 2nd house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | 8th (Scorpio) | Taurus | Neutral |
| Taurus | Venus | 6th (Libra) | Gemini | Friendly sign |
| Gemini | Mercury | 4th (Virgo) | Cancer | Enemy sign |
| Cancer | Moon | none | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Leo | Sun | none | Virgo | Neutral |
| Virgo | Mercury | 10th (Gemini) | Libra | Friendly sign |
| Libra | Venus | 8th (Taurus) | Scorpio | Neutral |
| Scorpio | Mars | 6th (Aries) | Sagittarius | Friendly sign |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 4th (Pisces) | Capricorn | Debilitated |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 2nd (Aquarius) | Aquarius | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Aquarius | Saturn | 12th (Capricorn) | Pisces | Neutral |
| Pisces | Jupiter | 10th (Sagittarius) | Aries | Friendly sign |
The spread is wide. Capricorn rising is the strongest case: Saturn rules both the 1st and the 2nd, so it is in its own sign, and in Aquarius it can be in moolatrikona. Sagittarius rising is the weakest: Jupiter, lord of the 1st and 4th, falls into Capricorn, its sign of debilitation, and Gemini rising puts Mercury in an enemy's sign in Cancer. Five Ascendants (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Pisces) give a friendly sign and four a neutral one. Because Jupiter and Venus are natural benefics, Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 would read their presence in the 2nd as favouring wealth, while Saturn, Mars and the Sun are malefics in the engine's BENEFICS / MALEFICS lists; Mercury and the Moon depend on condition.
Strength changes the reading
BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 lists what reduces the Lagna lord: debilitation, combustion or an enemy's sign bring illness, and conjunction with a malefic diminishes bodily ease. Ch. 13 Sl. 13 adds a 2nd-house rule: if the 2nd and its lord are joined by malefics, the native speaks untruth and tells tales. With the Lagna lord sitting in the 2nd, the planets sharing that sign matter twice, once for the person and once for the house of speech.
For Sagittarius rising, readers often ask whether debilitated Jupiter has neecha bhanga (cancelled debilitation). The BPHS translation in this corpus gives no verse for it, and the engine's dignity label does not apply any such rule, so this page leaves the label as the engine gives it.
The two Ascendants ruled by luminaries show how the planet's nature and its dignity can pull apart. For Leo rising the Sun goes into Virgo, a neutral sign for it; the Sun is a natural malefic, so Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 would not count it among the planets that bring wealth into the 2nd, even though Ch. 24 Sl. 2 reads the Lagna lord there favourably. For Cancer rising the Moon goes into Leo, a friendly sign by natural relationship, but whether the Moon acts as a benefic depends on how full it is. Capricorn rising sits at the other extreme: Saturn is a malefic by nature, yet as lord of both houses it occupies its own sign, and Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 treats the Lagna lord as specially auspicious whatever its nature.
Worked example: Cancer rising, the Moon in Leo
The engine found this chart by a deterministic search: 6 February 1985, 16:28 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Cancer 4.31. It can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator.
- Cancer rising makes the Moon the 1st lord. The Moon rules no other sign, so there is no second lordship to read in.
- The Moon is in Leo at 5.01 degrees, Magha nakshatra, pada 2: the 2nd house. It is not combust, and the engine labels its dignity "Neutral" in this chart.
- The 2nd house holds no other planet, but Saturn in Scorpio in the 5th aspects it by its 10th-house special aspect, under the engine's aspect rule. Saturn is in an enemy's sign.
- The Sun, Mercury (combust) and a debilitated Jupiter sit together in Capricorn, the 7th house.
BPHS would class this as a middling case. The Moon is neither dignified nor afflicted by sign, alone in the 2nd, but under a malefic aspect, the condition Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 and Sl. 13 treat as weighing on the 2nd house. The Moon's own strength also depends on its phase, a factor Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 raises by treating a full Moon as a benefic and a weak one as a malefic; with the Moon at Leo 5.01 and the Sun at Capricorn 23.96, the Moon is about 191 degrees ahead of the Sun, just past full.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 1st lord in the 2nd house in 263, or 8.8%. That describes the sky at those moments, not a share of people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case, the 2nd lord in the 1st house (Sl. 13), reads very differently, with sons and wealth but hostility to family. If both hold together the 1st and 2nd lords have exchanged signs, a parivartana. One sign either side are the 1st lord in the 1st and the 1st lord in the 3rd. For the planet in the worked example, see the Moon in the 2nd house and the Moon in Vedic astrology. To find which sign rises for you, use the Lagna calculator.
Questions about the 1st lord in the 2nd house
- What does BPHS say about the 1st lord in the 2nd house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 2: the native will be gainful, scholarly, happy, of good qualities, religious and honourable, and (in the text's wording) will have many wives. Results scale with the planet's strength under Sl. 145-148.
- Does the Lagna lord in the 2nd make it a maraka?
- Not in the corpus. BPHS Ch. 44 names the lords of the 2nd and 7th, and malefics there, as marakas. It does not say the Lagna lord turns into one by occupying the 2nd.
- Which Ascendant gives the strongest version?
- By sign dignity, Capricorn rising: Saturn owns both the 1st and 2nd and is in its own sign or moolatrikona in Aquarius. Sagittarius rising gives the weakest, with Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn.
- Does this placement mean I will be wealthy?
- Sl. 2 says "gainful", and Ch. 13 adds that a benefic in the 2nd favours wealth and a malefic does not. This app treats those as the text's rules about positions, not a forecast of anyone's income.
- How common is it?
- 263 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.8%) in the engine's sample.
