House lords

The Ascendant lord placed in the Ascendant itself: the BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 1 reading, why every Lagna gives an own-sign planet here, the 12-Ascendant table and an engine-computed chart.

In short

The 1st lord in the 1st house means the planet ruling the rising sign sits in the rising sign, so it is always in its own sign. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 1 reads it as physical happiness and prowess, intelligence and a fickle mind, with lines about two wives that belong to the text, not to any reader. How much of that applies depends on the planet's strength.

What the placement means

Every house is ruled by the planet that owns its sign, its house lord. When the lord of the rising sign stands in the rising sign itself, the chart has its 1st lord in the 1st house: the planet that represents the person sits at home, in the house that represents the person. It is the one placement in this series where "the lord" and "the house it occupies" are the same sign.

That has a consequence the other placements do not share. Because the lord occupies a sign it owns, it is always at least in its own sign, whatever the Lagna. Several Ascendants go further: the lord can be in moolatrikona, and for Virgo rising Mercury can be exalted. So this is a placement where the classical reading starts from a planet in good dignity, and the open questions are what joins it, what aspects it, and whether it is combust or retrograde.

The house involved

Only one house is in play. The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is, in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2, the house of physique, appearance, intellect, complexion, vigour, happiness and grief, and "innate nature". The house page covers those significations in full; this page is about what happens when the house's own ruler is the planet standing in it. In whole-sign counting (whole-sign houses) the 1st house is simply the rising sign, so the test is plain: is the rising sign's ruler in the rising sign?

The 1st house is counted as both a Kendra (angle) and a trikona (trine). BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 uses exactly that fact to call the Lagna lord "specially auspicious". A planet that would be troublesome as the owner of some other house is, as Lagna lord, treated as the chart's own representative.

What BPHS says about the Lagna lord in the Lagna

BPHS Ch. 24 opens with this exact case. Sl. 1 says that with the Lagna lord in the Lagna the native "will be endowed with physical happiness and prowess", will be intelligent and fickle-minded, and then adds, in the chapter's male-addressed idiom, two wives and union with other women. Both translations in this project's corpus (bphs.txt and bphs-alt.txt) have the same wording.

The verse splits into two kinds of claim. The first half is about the body and the mind, which are exactly the 1st house's significations: vigour, capacity, quickness. The second half is about relationships, which the 1st house does not govern in Ch. 11; it reads as a statement about temperament (restlessness, the "fickle" mind) projected onto marriage. This app reports the marriage clause as what the text says and does not turn it into a prediction about anyone.

Other chapters of BPHS add to Sl. 1 without contradicting it. Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 says that when the Lagna lord is in an angle or a trine there will be comfort of the body "at all times", and that a Lagna lord in debilitation, combustion or an enemy's sign brings illness. With the lord in its own sign the debilitation and enemy-sign conditions cannot arise here, but combustion can. Ch. 12 Sl. 5-7 adds that a Lagna lord in a movable sign, aspected by a benefic, gives fame, wealth and comforts; that applies to Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn rising when this placement holds.

Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 sets the scale for all of these verses: a lord gives full, half or a quarter of its stated results according to whether its strength is full, middling or negligible, and a planet ruling two houses is read for both. Saravali makes a parallel general remark at the end of its chapter on rising signs: if the rising sign or its lord is strong, the stated effects come to pass fully. Neither the Bhrigu Sutras nor Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus gives a separate verse for the Lagna lord in the Lagna.

Named yogas that use this placement

BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 9-12 lists wealth combinations that begin with the Lagna lord in its own sign rising: the Sun in Leo rising aspected or joined by Mars and Jupiter; the Moon in Cancer rising with Mercury and Jupiter; Mars in its own sign rising with Mercury, Venus and Saturn; Mercury in its own sign rising with Saturn and Jupiter. Ch. 36 Sl. 11-12 gives Chamar Yoga for an exalted Lagna lord in an angle aspected by Jupiter, which for this placement can only happen with Virgo rising, where Mercury is exalted in its own sign. This app's yoga calculator tests the Ch. 41 Sl. 9-15 family directly: it reports "Dhan Yoga (Wealth)" when a planet is in its own sign in the Lagna and each named planet is in the Lagna or aspects it. Chamar Yoga is not in its list.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The table is the engine's lordship arithmetic for all twelve rising signs. The last column is the engine's dignity rule for the planet in its own rising sign with no chart supplied, sampled at four degrees, which is why some rows show two or three labels.

The 1st lord and the 1st-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

Every row is own sign or better. The variation is in the degree: Mars in Aries, Venus in Libra, the Sun in Leo, Jupiter in Sagittarius and Saturn in Aquarius each have a moolatrikona band, and Mercury in Virgo runs from exalted through moolatrikona to own sign as the degree rises. Cancer and Leo rising are the two Ascendants whose lord rules nothing else, since the luminaries own one sign each. For the other ten, the second sign the lord owns travels with it into the Lagna; for Capricorn rising that second house is the 2nd, for Aquarius the 12th, for Taurus and Scorpio the 6th, for Aries and Libra the 8th. Under Sl. 145-148 those second lordships are read alongside the first. See also swakshetra (own sign) and moolatrikona.

Strength changes the reading

Since own sign is guaranteed, the factors that move this placement up or down are the others BPHS names. Combustion matters most for Mercury and Venus, which never stray far from the Sun: for Gemini, Virgo, Taurus or Libra rising, a lord within its combustion distance of the Sun is in one of the Ch. 12 conditions for reduced bodily ease. Companions matter next. Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 says a Lagna lord joined by a malefic diminishes physical felicity, and Sl. 3 that a Lagna afflicted by malefics without a benefic aspect does not give bodily health.

Aspects can lift the reading in the other direction. Ch. 12 Sl. 4 says a benefic in or aspecting the Lagna gives a pleasing appearance and bodily felicity. In this app's engine the natural benefics are Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon (BENEFICS in kundaliEngine.js), and aspects follow Parashara's full seventh-house aspect plus the special aspects of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn; see drishti. None of this changes whether the placement exists; it changes how much of Sl. 1 the texts would expect.

Worked example: Aries rising, Mars in Aries

This chart came from a deterministic search in the engine, not from a choice made to illustrate the verse. It can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 2 April 1985, 08:10 IST, New Delhi. The engine gives an Ascendant of Aries 26.47.

  • With Aries rising the 1st lord is Mars, which also rules Scorpio, the 8th house.
  • Mars is in Aries at 19.26 degrees, Bharani nakshatra, pada 2, in the 1st house. It is not retrograde and not combust, and the engine labels it "Own sign". At 19.26 it is past the moolatrikona band the engine uses for Mars in Aries, which is why the label is own sign rather than moolatrikona.
  • Rahu shares the 1st house at Aries 26.68.
  • Jupiter is in Capricorn in the 10th, marked Debilitated; Saturn is retrograde in Scorpio in the 8th, Mars's other sign.

Read with Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148, this is a lord in its own sign, unafflicted by combustion, so it is not the negligible case. Two details complicate it. Mars also rules the 8th, so BPHS would read the 8th-lord results alongside Sl. 1. And the Lagna lord shares the sign with Rahu, a node, which Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says gives results according to the lords and houses it is joined with. Aries is a movable sign, so the Ch. 12 Sl. 5-7 condition would apply if a benefic aspected Mars; in this chart none does. Under the engine's aspect rule no graha other than the nodes aspects the 1st, so that clause is met only in half. The engine's yoga detector does flag Ruchaka Yoga here, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas, because Mars is in its own sign in an angle; see Ruchaka Yoga.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 1st lord in the 1st house in 231, or 7.7%. That is a property of the sky and the clock, not a count of people.

Neighbouring placements

The Lagna lord one sign later, the 1st lord in the 2nd house (Sl. 2), turns the reading towards gain and learning; one sign earlier, the 1st lord in the 12th house (Sl. 12), is the verse about expense and lost bodily ease. The angle opposite, the 1st lord in the 7th, is the one Lagna-lord verse that depends on whether the planet is a benefic or a malefic. For the planet that most often appears in the worked example, see Mars in the 1st house and Mars in Vedic astrology.

The placement needs an accurate birth time, because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours. Find yours with the Lagna calculator, and read when the birth time is unknown if you are unsure of it.

Questions about the 1st lord in the 1st house

What does BPHS say about the 1st lord in the 1st house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 1: physical happiness and prowess, intelligence, a fickle mind, and (in the text's male-addressed wording) two wives and other women. The chapter's closing verses scale those results by the planet's strength.
Is the Lagna lord always strong in the 1st house?
It is always in its own sign there, which is one of the better dignities. Combustion, malefic companions and aspects can still reduce what BPHS expects from it, and for some Ascendants the lord also rules a difficult house.
Does this placement mean two marriages?
The verse mentions two wives. This app reports that as the text's statement, written for a male native in another era, and does not predict marriages from a single placement.
Which Ascendants have a lord that rules no other house?
Cancer (the Moon) and Leo (the Sun). Every other Ascendant's lord also owns a second house, which BPHS reads together with the first.
How common is it?
In the engine's sample it occurred in 231 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.7%. That describes moments in time, not people.
