In short
The 1st lord in the 7th house puts the ruler of the rising sign directly opposite it, in the angle of marriage, partnership and dealings with others, from where it aspects the Ascendant. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 7 is one of the harshest verses in its chapter and splits on whether the planet is a benefic or a malefic. In the engine's sign-only dignity no Ascendant gives this lord a friendly or own sign.
What the placement means
The 1st house lord is the ruler of the rising sign. In the 7th house it sits in the sign opposite the Ascendant, the house of the spouse, partners and the other party in any dealing. The person's own planet is placed where the chart reads others.
Opposition has a mechanical consequence: every planet aspects the seventh sign from itself, so a Lagna lord in the 7th always aspects the Lagna. Both houses are Kendras. And because no planet owns two signs that are seven apart, the Lagna lord in the 7th is never in its own sign; it always sits in a sign ruled by another planet, often one it does not get on with.
The two houses involved
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body and nature of the person (BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2).
The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is, in Ch. 11 Sl. 8, the house of the wife, travel, trade, loss of sight and death. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 groups the 7th with the 10th as the angles "specially for happiness". The 7th is also one of the two maraka houses in Ch. 44. The house page sets out its significations.
What BPHS says about the Lagna lord in the 7th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 7 is the only verse in the first twelve that divides by the nature of the planet. If the Lagna lord is a malefic placed in the 7th, the text says the native's wife "will not live (long)". If it is a benefic, the native will wander aimlessly, face poverty and be dejected; but the verse adds that he will "alternatively become a king", which the translator's gloss explains as the case where the planet is strong. bphs-alt.txt has the same text.
This is a bleak verse, and this page reports it as what the text says, summarised rather than repeated. It is not a prediction about a marriage, a spouse's life or anyone's finances. Three features of the verse limit how far it can be taken even on its own terms. It is conditional on the planet's nature, so it cannot be read without knowing which planet rules the Lagna. It has an explicit escape clause for strength, the "king" alternative. And Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales every verse in the chapter by strength and lets contrary lordships cancel.
Other chapters read the placement more mildly. Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 says a Lagna lord in an angle or trine gives bodily comfort at all times, and the 7th is an angle. Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 defines which planets count as benefic and malefic, which Sl. 7 depends on: Jupiter and Venus benefic, the Moon benefic when full, Mercury according to its company, and the Sun, Mars and Saturn malefic. For questions about the spouse, BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 also sends the reader to the Navamsa rather than the birth chart alone. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no verse of their own for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The table gives the engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the planet in the 7th sign.
| Ascendant | 1st lord | Other house it rules | 7th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | 8th (Scorpio) | Libra | Neutral |
| Taurus | Venus | 6th (Libra) | Scorpio | Neutral |
| Gemini | Mercury | 4th (Virgo) | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Cancer | Moon | none | Capricorn | Neutral |
| Leo | Sun | none | Aquarius | Enemy sign |
| Virgo | Mercury | 10th (Gemini) | Pisces | Debilitated |
| Libra | Venus | 8th (Taurus) | Aries | Neutral |
| Scorpio | Mars | 6th (Aries) | Taurus | Neutral |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 4th (Pisces) | Gemini | Enemy sign |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 2nd (Aquarius) | Cancer | Enemy sign |
| Aquarius | Saturn | 12th (Capricorn) | Leo | Enemy sign |
| Pisces | Jupiter | 10th (Sagittarius) | Virgo | Enemy sign |
The dignity column is unusually flat. Six Ascendants give a neutral sign and five an enemy's sign; Virgo rising is the one debilitation, with Mercury in Pisces. Nothing is exalted, nothing friendly, nothing own sign. In a real chart the engine adds the temporary relationship between the planet and the sign's lord, which can lift a neutral to friendly or drop it to enemy, so these are starting points.
Sorting the same rows by the planet's nature, which is what Sl. 7 asks for: the Lagna lord is a natural malefic for Aries and Scorpio (Mars), Leo (the Sun) and Capricorn and Aquarius (Saturn), and a natural benefic for Taurus and Libra (Venus), Sagittarius and Pisces (Jupiter). Gemini and Virgo (Mercury) and Cancer (the Moon) depend on condition: Mercury on its company and the Moon on its phase.
The second lordship each planet brings into the 7th adds another layer that Sl. 145-148 asks to be read in. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the lord also owns the 4th, so two angle lordships arrive in a third angle. For Virgo and Pisces it also owns the 10th. For Aries and Libra it owns the 8th, and for Taurus and Scorpio the 6th, both houses Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 treats as troublesome to own. Capricorn rising is a special case: Saturn owns the 1st and the 2nd, and Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 lists the 2nd lord as a maraka, so a planet holding a maraka lordship sits in the other maraka house. Ch. 44 does not say how that combines with the Lagna lordship, and this page does not guess.
Strength changes the reading
Sl. 7 itself names strength as the deciding factor for a benefic Lagna lord. With no exaltation or own sign available in this house, strength has to come from elsewhere: freedom from combustion, the company of benefics, a friendly temporary relationship with the sign lord, and strength in the divisional charts. Chamar Yoga (Ch. 36 Sl. 11-12), which needs an exalted Lagna lord in an angle aspected by Jupiter, cannot form through this placement, since no Lagna lord is exalted in the 7th sign.
The aspect back onto the Lagna is the placement's other notable feature. A malefic Lagna lord aspecting its own house is still the Lagna lord; Ch. 34 calls it specially auspicious. See drishti for how the engine counts aspects.
Worked example: Leo rising, the Sun in Aquarius
This chart came from the engine's deterministic search: 15 February 1985, 19:05 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 15.68. It can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator.
- Leo rising makes the Sun the 1st lord. The Sun rules no other sign.
- The Sun is in Aquarius at 3.18 degrees, Dhanishta pada 3: the 7th house. The engine gives "Neutral"; the table's sign-only label is Enemy sign, and the chart's temporary relationship with Saturn lifts it one step.
- Mercury is also in the 7th at Aquarius 0.22, combust. For Leo rising Mercury rules the 2nd and 11th.
- Saturn, which owns Aquarius and so is the 7th lord, is in Scorpio at 4.14 in the 4th, in an enemy's sign. No graha other than the nodes aspects the 7th under the engine's rule.
The Sun is a natural malefic, so this chart falls under the first clause of Sl. 7, the clause about the spouse. Read with the rest of BPHS the picture is less one-sided: the Sun is the Lagna lord, which Ch. 34 calls specially auspicious; it rules no second house that could add a contrary lordship; it sits in an angle, which Ch. 12 reads favourably; and it aspects its own sign, Leo, from the 7th. Its dignity is neutral, the middle of Sl. 145-148's scale. The text gives a rule; this app does not convert it into a forecast.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 1st lord in the 7th house in 250, or 8.3%. That is a property of the sampled moments, not a count of people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case, the 7th lord in the 1st house, is the 7th-house series' first page. The neighbours are the 1st lord in the 6th and the 1st lord in the 8th. For the spouse, BPHS points to the Navamsa (D9), explained in the second-chart essay and computed by the Navamsa calculator. For the worked example's planet see the Sun in the 7th house.
Questions about the 1st lord in the 7th house
- What does BPHS say about the 1st lord in the 7th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 7 divides by the planet's nature. For a malefic Lagna lord it speaks of the spouse's longevity; for a benefic it speaks of wandering and poverty, or kingship if the planet is strong. This page reports those as the text's claims only.
- Does it mean my marriage will be unhappy?
- No. A single verse about one placement is not a forecast. BPHS itself scales the verse by strength, cancels contrary lordships, and reads the spouse from the Navamsa as well.
- Can the Lagna lord be strong in the 7th?
- Not by own sign or exaltation; no Ascendant gives either. Strength has to come from the planet's condition: no combustion, benefic company, a good temporary relationship and good divisional placements.
- Does the Lagna lord in the 7th aspect the Lagna?
- Yes. Every planet aspects the seventh sign from itself, so the Lagna lord here always aspects the Ascendant.
- How common is it?
- 250 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.3%) in the engine's sample.
