In short
The 1st lord in the 8th house places the ruler of the rising sign in the dusthana of longevity, inheritance and hidden matters. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 8 gives a mixed reading, an accomplished scholar alongside ill health, anger and a list of vices that belong to the text. For Aries and Libra rising the lord also owns the 8th, so it sits in its own sign there.
What the placement means
The ruler of the rising sign, the 1st house lord, represents the person. In the 8th house it sits in the sign the texts read for length of life, sudden events, inheritance and what is hidden. It is the middle of the three dusthanas and, in BPHS's scheme, the house with the heaviest associations.
The placement is also unusual in shape: the 8th is the sign before the 9th, the house of fortune, and from the 8th the Lagna lord aspects the 2nd, the house of wealth and family. Neither fact is commented on by Ch. 24, but both explain why the house is never read for one theme alone.
The two houses involved
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body, vigour and character (BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2).
The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is, in Ch. 11 Sl. 9, the house of longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and things past and to come. The house page develops those themes; this one concerns the Lagna lord arriving there.
What BPHS says about the Lagna lord in the 8th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 8 says that with the Lagna lord in the 8th the native "will be an accomplished scholar", and then lists ill health, a tendency to theft, much anger, gambling and adultery. bphs-alt.txt has the same list.
The verse opens with the one unambiguously positive item, scholarship, and the 8th's association with what is hidden and with things "that have happened and are to happen" (Ch. 11 Sl. 9) is a plausible link to learning, though the verse does not draw it. The rest is a catalogue of faults. This page summarises it as the text's claim, written in a moral idiom that was the chapter's norm, and does not attach it to any reader. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 makes every such verse depend on strength, with full, half or quarter effect.
Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 adds the general rule: a Lagna lord in the 8th, 6th or 12th diminishes physical felicity. The 8th-house chapter (Ch. 19) has rules on longevity that involve the Lagna lord. Sl. 2 reads the 8th lord joined with the Lagna lord in the 8th as unfavourable for life span; Sl. 4-7 read the lords of the 1st, 5th and 8th in their own or friendly signs as favourable. This app does not compute longevity and does not apply those rules; they are named so a reader knows where the corpus speaks to the question.
Ownership changes the reading for some Ascendants. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the 8th lord is not auspicious, but that the Sun and Moon owning the 8th is not evil, and that an 8th lord who also owns a trine gives auspicious effects. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no verse of their own for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic for all twelve Ascendants, with the dignity its rule returns for the planet in the 8th sign when no chart is supplied:
| Ascendant | 1st lord | Other house it rules | 8th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | 8th (Scorpio) | Scorpio | Own sign |
| Taurus | Venus | 6th (Libra) | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Gemini | Mercury | 4th (Virgo) | Capricorn | Neutral |
| Cancer | Moon | none | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Leo | Sun | none | Pisces | Friendly sign |
| Virgo | Mercury | 10th (Gemini) | Aries | Neutral |
| Libra | Venus | 8th (Taurus) | Taurus | Own sign |
| Scorpio | Mars | 6th (Aries) | Gemini | Enemy sign |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 4th (Pisces) | Cancer | Exalted |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 2nd (Aquarius) | Leo | Enemy sign |
| Aquarius | Saturn | 12th (Capricorn) | Virgo | Friendly sign |
| Pisces | Jupiter | 10th (Sagittarius) | Libra | Enemy sign |
Aries and Libra rising stand apart. Mars owns Aries and Scorpio; Venus owns Libra and Taurus. For those two Ascendants the Lagna lord is also the 8th lord, so it is in its own sign in the 8th. Here the Lagna lord (a trine as well as an angle, by Ch. 34) owns the 8th, the case that passage reads as auspicious. Sagittarius rising puts Jupiter in Cancer, its exaltation, in the 8th. At the other end Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces rising put the lord in an enemy's sign: Mars in Gemini, Saturn in Leo, Jupiter in Libra.
Strength changes the reading
The text gives few positive conditions for this house, so dignity carries more weight than usual. An own-sign or exalted Lagna lord in the 8th is the "full strength" case of Sl. 145-148 and, by the same verse, the case where Sl. 8's stated results come through most fully, good and bad alike. Aspects and company matter as everywhere: a benefic aspect on the 8th or a benefic companion is the texts' usual counterweight, and malefic company the opposite.
The luminaries need a separate note. For Leo rising the Sun goes to Pisces, a friendly sign, and for Cancer rising the Moon goes to Aquarius, a neutral one. Ch. 34's remark that the Sun and Moon are not evil as 8th lords concerns ownership, which does not arise here (they are the 1st lords). What applies is Ch. 12's rule about a Lagna lord in a dusthana, and, for the Moon, its phase.
The second lordships are worth listing because several of them are dusthanas too. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the Lagna lord also owns the 6th, so a 6th-house lordship arrives in the 8th. For Aquarius rising Saturn owns the 12th as well, and Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the results of the 12th and 8th lords "depend on their association", which is why company in the 8th matters so much for that Ascendant. For Gemini and Sagittarius the second house is the 4th, for Virgo and Pisces the 10th, and for Capricorn the 2nd: angles and a maraka house carried into the 8th. Sl. 145-148 says both lordships are read and contrary ones cancel.
There is also the aspect. A planet in the 8th aspects the 2nd by the seventh-house aspect, so in every row of the table the Lagna lord looks at the house of wealth and family. In the worked example below, Venus in Taurus aspects Scorpio, which is the 2nd for Libra rising. BPHS does not comment on that aspect for this placement; the engine simply records it.
Worked example: Libra rising, Venus in Taurus
The engine's deterministic search returned: 11 July 1985, 12:57 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Libra 1.01. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Libra rising makes Venus the 1st lord. Venus also owns Taurus, which for Libra rising is the 8th house.
- Venus is in Taurus at 11.73 degrees, Rohini pada 1: the 8th house, its own sign. Not retrograde, not combust.
- Jupiter, retrograde and debilitated in Capricorn in the 4th, aspects the 8th by its 5th-house special aspect under the engine's rule.
- Saturn is exalted and retrograde in Libra in the 1st, at 27.97; the Moon is in Aries in the 7th.
This is the own-sign case. The Lagna lord sits in the house it also owns, so the Ch. 34 rule that an 8th lord owning a trine gives good effects applies to the same planet. The 8th receives an aspect from Jupiter, a natural benefic but a debilitated one, so the texts would count it as benefic influence at reduced strength. Venus here is alone in the 8th. On Sl. 145-148's scale this is a strong Lagna lord; Ch. 12 still lists the 8th as a house that reduces bodily ease. The two readings are given side by side because BPHS gives both. The engine's yoga detector adds a third: because Venus is the 8th lord sitting in the 8th, it reports Sarala Yoga, a rule its code attributes to Advanced Predictive Astrology's case studies rather than to a BPHS sloka, which reads a dusthana lord in a dusthana as a source of resilience. It also reports Sasa Yoga for the exalted Saturn in the Lagna.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 1st lord in the 8th house in 260, or 8.7%. That is a property of the sampled sky, not of people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 8th lord in the 1st house, is read from the other side. The neighbours are the 1st lord in the 7th and the 1st lord in the 9th. The other dusthanas are the 6th and the 12th. For the worked example's planet see Venus in the 8th house and Venus in Vedic astrology. Find your rising sign with the Lagna calculator.
Questions about the 1st lord in the 8th house
- What does BPHS say about the 1st lord in the 8th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 8: an accomplished scholar, followed by a list of faults (ill health, anger, theft, gambling, adultery). This page reports the list as the text's statement; Sl. 145-148 scales it by strength.
- Does this placement mean a short life?
- The app computes no longevity and does not read one from a single placement. BPHS Ch. 19 has longevity rules involving the Lagna and 8th lords; they are named on this page, not applied.
- Which Ascendants have the Lagna lord in its own sign here?
- Aries (Mars in Scorpio) and Libra (Venus in Taurus), because for them the Lagna lord also owns the 8th. Sagittarius rising gives Jupiter exalted in Cancer.
- Is anything favourable about it in the texts?
- Sl. 8 opens with scholarship, and Ch. 34 reads an 8th lord that also owns a trine as auspicious, which covers Aries and Libra rising.
- How common is it?
- 260 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.7%) in the engine's sample.
