In short
The 1st lord in the 9th house places the ruler of the rising sign in the strongest trine, the house of fortune, religion, teachers and the father. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 9 is wholly favourable: fortunate, popular, devout, skilful, eloquent, with spouse, children and wealth. The planet is exalted there for Leo and Aquarius rising and debilitated for Scorpio rising.
What the placement means
When the planet ruling the rising sign occupies the ninth sign from it, the chart's 1st house lord is in the 9th house. The person's planet sits in the house of fortune, religion and dharma, teachers, long journeys and, in many readings, the father.
The 9th is the strongest trikona, and the Lagna is both a trine and a Kendra. In BPHS's lordship scheme a Kendra lord placed in a trine is one of the relationships that produce a yoga, so this placement belongs to the most favourable family the texts describe.
The two houses involved
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is body and nature (BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2).
The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is, in Ch. 11 Sl. 10, the house of fortunes, the wife's brother, religion, the brother's wife and visits to shrines. Ch. 20 develops it, including a long section on the father. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 groups the 9th with the 5th as houses "specially for wealth".
What BPHS says about the Lagna lord in the 9th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 9 says the native "will be fortunate, dear to people", a devotee of Vishnu, skilful, eloquent, and endowed with wife, sons and wealth. bphs-alt.txt has the same text. It is the most consistently favourable of the twelve Lagna-lord verses, with no condition attached and no fault listed.
Each clause maps onto the 9th's significations: fortune, religion, and the standing that comes with them. "Eloquent in speech" is the one item not obviously from the 9th; the verse states it without explanation. The religious clause names a particular deity, which this page reports as part of the text; it makes no statement about any reader's faith.
BPHS supports the verse from several directions. Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 and 5-7 read a Lagna lord in an angle or trine as bodily comfort, long life, wealth and royal favour. Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 says that when a Kendra lord is in a trine, or a trine lord in a Kendra, a yoga arises and the native becomes famous. Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28 gives Lakshmi Yoga for a 9th lord in an angle in its own, moolatrikona or exaltation sign while the Lagna lord is strong; that is about the 9th lord's position, but it is one of several yogas in which a strong Lagna lord and the 9th work together.
The 9th-house chapter adds two conditional rules. Ch. 20 Sl. 11 says that if the Lagna lord is in the 9th but joined by the 6th lord, father and native will be at odds. Ch. 20 Sl. 29 says that if the Lagna lord is in the 9th, the 9th lord in the Lagna and Jupiter in the 7th, there will be gains of wealth and conveyances; the first two conditions together are a sign exchange, which the engine flags as Parivartana Yoga. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic, with its dignity rule applied to the planet in the 9th sign using natural relationships only:
| Ascendant | 1st lord | Other house it rules | 9th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | 8th (Scorpio) | Sagittarius | Friendly sign |
| Taurus | Venus | 6th (Libra) | Capricorn | Friendly sign |
| Gemini | Mercury | 4th (Virgo) | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Cancer | Moon | none | Pisces | Neutral |
| Leo | Sun | none | Aries | Exalted |
| Virgo | Mercury | 10th (Gemini) | Taurus | Friendly sign |
| Libra | Venus | 8th (Taurus) | Gemini | Friendly sign |
| Scorpio | Mars | 6th (Aries) | Cancer | Debilitated |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 4th (Pisces) | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 2nd (Aquarius) | Virgo | Friendly sign |
| Aquarius | Saturn | 12th (Capricorn) | Libra | Exalted |
| Pisces | Jupiter | 10th (Sagittarius) | Scorpio | Friendly sign |
Seven of the twelve Ascendants give a friendly sign, and two give exaltation: Leo rising, with the Sun in Aries, and Aquarius rising, with Saturn in Libra. Only Scorpio rising gives debilitation, Mars in Cancer. Gemini and Cancer rising are neutral (Mercury in Aquarius, the Moon in Pisces). On the sign-only measure this is one of the strongest tables in the Lagna-lord series.
The "other house" column changes which Kendra-trikona link the planet makes. For Virgo and Pisces rising the Lagna lord also owns the 10th, so one planet brings two angle lordships into the best trine. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising it brings the 4th. Those four Ascendants put the most Kendra lordship into the 9th. For Aries and Libra rising the second house is the 8th, for Taurus and Scorpio the 6th, for Capricorn the 2nd and for Aquarius the 12th. Ch. 34 Sl. 15 warns that when a Kendra or trine lord also owns an evil house, the mere relationships of Sl. 11-12 do not produce a Raja Yoga. That caution applies to the six Ascendants whose Lagna lord also rules the 2nd, 6th, 8th or 12th.
The two exalted cases differ in kind. The Sun for Leo rising owns nothing else, so its exaltation in the 9th carries only the Lagna lordship. Saturn for Aquarius rising also owns the 12th, which comes with it into Libra; BPHS would read an exalted planet carrying one auspicious and one difficult lordship under Sl. 145-148's instruction to weigh both.
Strength changes the reading
With the verse so favourable, strength decides how much of it Sl. 145-148 would allow. Debilitation, combustion and an enemy's sign are Ch. 12's weakening conditions for the Lagna lord; only Scorpio rising produces debilitation by sign, but combustion can occur for any Ascendant whose Lagna lord is near the Sun. The second lordship each planet carries also comes into the 9th: for Taurus and Scorpio rising it is the 6th, which is exactly the companion Ch. 20 Sl. 11 warns about, except that here the Lagna lord is the 6th lord itself. The text does not say how to read that overlap, and this page leaves it there.
Aspects on the 9th come from planets in the 3rd (seventh aspect), Jupiter in the 1st or 5th, Mars in the 6th or 2nd, and Saturn in the 7th or 12th, under the engine's rule. See drishti for the special aspects.
Worked example: Scorpio rising, Mars debilitated in Cancer
The engine's deterministic search returned the hardest Ascendant in the table: 20 July 1985, 15:34 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 12.3. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Scorpio rising makes Mars the 1st lord; Mars also owns Aries, the 6th.
- Mars is in Cancer at 3.29 degrees, Punarvasu pada 4: the 9th house. The engine marks it Debilitated and combust.
- The Sun is in Cancer at 3.98, less than a degree from Mars. For Scorpio rising the Sun owns the 10th. Mercury (8th and 11th lord) is also in Cancer, at 29.37.
- The 9th lord, the Moon, is in Leo in the 10th. Jupiter (debilitated, retrograde, in the 3rd) and Saturn (exalted, retrograde, in the 12th) both aspect the 9th under the engine's rule.
The chart is a good test of Sl. 145-148. The house is the best the Lagna lord can occupy, and Sl. 9 is entirely favourable; but the planet is debilitated and combust, which Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 reads as weakness, and the chapter's own rule then expects only a fraction of the verse. The company is mixed: the Sun, as 10th lord, joins the Lagna lord in a trine, a Kendra-trikona relationship in Ch. 34 terms. The 9th lord is in the 10th, not the Lagna, so the Ch. 20 Sl. 29 exchange does not occur. A different exchange does: the Sun (10th lord) is in Cancer, the Moon's sign, and the Moon (9th lord) is in Leo, the Sun's, so the 9th and 10th lords have swapped signs and the engine reports a Parivartana Yoga between them, framed as favourable since both own a trine or angle.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 1st lord in the 9th house in 215, or 7.2%. That describes the sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case, the 9th lord in the 1st house, is read from the 9th-house side. The neighbours are the 1st lord in the 8th and the 1st lord in the 10th; the other trine is the 1st lord in the 5th. For trine lords working together see the 5th and 9th lords Raja Yoga, and for the worked example's planet Mars in the 9th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
Questions about the 1st lord in the 9th house
- What does BPHS say about the 1st lord in the 9th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 9: fortunate, dear to people, devout, skilful, eloquent, with spouse, children and wealth. It is the most uniformly favourable of the twelve Lagna-lord verses.
- Is it a Raja Yoga?
- BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 says a Kendra lord in a trine causes a yoga, and the Lagna lord counts as a Kendra lord. The texts still scale the result by strength.
- What does it say about the father?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 9 says nothing about the father. Ch. 20 Sl. 11 says that if the Lagna lord in the 9th is joined by the 6th lord, father and native will be at odds; this page reports that only as the text's rule.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest version?
- Leo rising (the Sun exalted in Aries) and Aquarius rising (Saturn exalted in Libra). Scorpio rising gives the weakest, with Mars debilitated in Cancer.
- How common is it?
- 215 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (7.2%) in the engine's sample.
