In short
The 9th lord in the 1st house is the ruler of the house of fortune, father and dharma sitting in the Ascendant itself. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 97 reads it as a fortunate, virtuous, charming and learned person honoured by the king and the public. Which planet carries it, and how strong it is there, depends on the rising sign.
What the placement means
Every house is ruled by the planet that owns its sign, and that house lord carries the affairs of its house wherever it stands. "The 9th lord in the 1st house" names the planet that rules the house of fortune, the father and dharma, standing in the rising sign, the house that the texts read for the body, temperament and the person as a whole.
Both houses are trines (Kona or trikona): the 1st, 5th and 9th. Counted from the 9th, the 1st is itself the 5th house, so the placement links one trine to another along the same triangle. The 1st is also an angle (Kendra), which is why BPHS calls the Lagna both a Kendra and a Kon. This app counts houses whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses), so the placement holds when the planet ruling the 9th sign stands in the rising sign. Without a birth time the Ascendant, and so the placement, is unknown; see when the birth time is unknown.
The two houses involved
The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is the house the classical texts read for fortune, the father, the teacher and religious merit. Its page covers its significations and its own karaka; this page only follows its lord.
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the Ascendant: the body, health, temperament and the starting point from which every other house is counted. A lord that moves into the 1st is, in the texts' language, joined to the native directly rather than to some third party.
What BPHS says about the 9th lord in the 1st
BPHS Ch. 24 opens the 9th lord's twelve verses with this one. Sl. 97 says that if the lord of Dharm is in the Lagna the native "will be fortunate, will be honoured by the king", and adds that he will be virtuous, charming, learned and honoured by the public. The alternative translation in this project's corpus (bphs-alt) has the same wording. Unlike many verses in the chapter, there is no mixed clause here: every item is a quality of the person or of how others treat them.
That fits the mechanism the chapter assumes. A house lord carries its house to where it sits; the house of fortune, carried into the house of the self, becomes a statement about the native's own standing rather than about the father or a journey.
BPHS never leaves a Ch. 24 verse unqualified. Sl. 145-148 close the chapter: these effects are to be judged by the planet's strength, full, half or a quarter of the results for a strong, middling or weak planet, and a planet that owns two houses gives the results of both lordships, contrary results cancelling. The 9th lord in the 1st with the planet debilitated is, on the text's own terms, a quarter of Sl. 97 at most.
Why Ch. 34 treats this placement well
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 sorts lordships: the lord of a Kon "will give auspicious results", the Lagna lord is specially auspicious because the Lagna is both Kendra and Kon, and the 5th and 9th are "specially for wealth". Sl. 11-12 then say that a Kon lord placed in a Kendra causes a yoga, and Sl. 13 calls a planet a Yog Karak when it owns a Kon and a Kendra or sits in one. The 9th lord in the 1st satisfies the placement half of that rule outright. This app's yoga detector applies a stricter version (a Kendra lord and a Kona lord joined in one house or in mutual aspect), so it flags a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga here only when the 9th lord shares the 1st with a Kendra lord, or is itself the Lagna lord's partner by aspect.
Two further passages bear on it. Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28 name Lakshmi Yoga: the 9th lord in a Kendra in its own, moolatrikona or exaltation sign while the Lagna lord is strong. The 1st is a Kendra, so for one Ascendant in the table below the 9th lord in the 1st already meets the sign condition. The engine does not test Lakshmi Yoga; it can be checked by hand. And Ch. 41 Sl. 16 says the 9th and 5th lords bestow wealth in their Dasha periods, which is why the 9th lord's Mahadasha is the time the texts would look to for this verse.
Where the other texts are silent
Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse for the 9th lord in the 1st; both read planets in houses, not lords. The modern case book Advanced Predictive Astrology states in passing that the "9th lord is always good for any native", a general view rather than a reading of this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The table is the engine's lordship arithmetic for all twelve rising signs. Because the 1st house is the rising sign itself, the third column is just the Ascendant again: the 9th lord is standing in the Lagna. The dignity column is what the engine's rule returns for that planet in that sign with no chart, so it uses natural relationships only; in a real chart the friendly, neutral and enemy tiers can move one step because the engine adds the temporary relationship.
| Ascendant | 9th lord | 1st house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Jupiter | Aries | Friendly sign | 12th |
| Taurus | Saturn | Taurus | Friendly sign | 10th |
| Gemini | Saturn | Gemini | Friendly sign | 8th |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Cancer | Exalted | 6th |
| Leo | Mars | Leo | Friendly sign | 4th |
| Virgo | Venus | Virgo | Debilitated | 2nd |
| Libra | Mercury | Libra | Friendly sign | 12th |
| Scorpio | Moon | Scorpio | Debilitated | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Sagittarius | Sun | Sagittarius | Friendly sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Capricorn | Neutral | 6th |
| Aquarius | Venus | Aquarius | Friendly sign | 4th |
| Pisces | Mars | Pisces | Friendly sign | 2nd |
Three rows stand apart. With Cancer rising the 9th lord is Jupiter, exalted in Cancer: the one case where Lakshmi Yoga's sign condition is met by the placement alone (Jupiter also rules the 6th, which Sl. 145-148 says must be read alongside). With Virgo rising the 9th lord is Venus, debilitated in Virgo, and with Scorpio rising it is the Moon, debilitated in Scorpio, the two rows in which BPHS would expect the least of Sl. 97. With Leo and Aquarius rising the 9th lord also rules the 4th (Mars for Leo, Venus for Aquarius), so the planet owns a Kon and a Kendra at once and Ch. 34 Sl. 13 calls it a yogakaraka. For Sagittarius and Scorpio rising the lord is a luminary with no second house.
Strength changes the reading
Because Sl. 145-148 scale every Ch. 24 result by strength, the first question is the lord's dignity. Exaltation (uchcha) and own sign give the full verse; debilitation (neecha) gives a quarter. Combustion matters too: a 9th lord within the Sun's combustion orb is weakened in the engine's own reckoning (combustion), and the worked example below shows exactly that.
The second question is the other lordship. A Jupiter that rules the 9th and 12th (Aries rising) or the 9th and 6th (Cancer rising) brings a dusthana with it; Ch. 34 Sl. 7 says the planet owning the more significant house stalls the effects of the less significant one, and the 9th, a trine, is the stronger of each pair. A Saturn that rules the 9th and 10th (Taurus rising) brings a Kendra instead.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse case, the 1st lord in the 9th house, is Ch. 24 Sl. 9: fortunate, dear to people, a devotee of Vishnu, skilful and eloquent, with spouse, children and wealth. When both happen in one chart the two lords have exchanged signs, which the texts call parivartana and this app's yoga list flags. The 9th lord one house on, in the 2nd (Sl. 98), turns toward scholarship, wealth and family; one house back, in the 12th (Sl. 108), speaks of loss of fortune and spending on good works. The 1st is where the 9th lord's verse is plainest about the person.
Worked example: Aquarius rising, Venus in the Lagna
This chart came from a deterministic search in this app's engine, not from choosing a chart to make a point. Anyone can enter it in the birth chart calculator: 24 February 1986, 06:22 IST, New Delhi. The engine gives an Ascendant of Aquarius 0.3, almost exactly at the start of the sign.
- With Aquarius rising, the 9th house is Libra, so the 9th lord is Venus. Venus also rules Taurus, the 4th house: a Kon and a Kendra together, the yogakaraka case of Ch. 34 Sl. 13.
- The engine places Venus in Aquarius at 20.0 degrees, Shatabhisha pada 4, in the 1st house. The placement holds.
- Venus is not retrograde but is combust. Its dignity is "Friendly sign": Saturn, lord of Aquarius, is a natural friend of Venus.
- Venus is far from alone. The Sun (Aquarius 11.46), Jupiter (7.21, also combust) and Mercury (28.46) share the 1st. The Lagna lord, Saturn, is in Scorpio in the 10th, marked "Enemy sign".
Read with Sl. 145-148, this is a friendly-sign 9th lord that is also combust: by the engine's marks neither the strongest nor the weakest case. Read with Ch. 34, Venus here is a yogakaraka in a Kendra, joined by the Sun (lord of the 7th, another Kendra) and Mercury (lord of the 5th, a Kon), so the detector's Kendra-Kona test has several pairs to consider in one house. Lakshmi Yoga does not form: Venus in Aquarius is a friendly sign, not its own, moolatrikona or exaltation sign.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 9th lord in the 1st house in 222, or 7.4%. That is a property of the sky and the clock, not a count of people, and it sits a little under the one-in-twelve a single house would suggest.
Checking it in your own chart
- Find your rising sign with the Lagna calculator and read the 9th lord from the table.
- Open your birth chart and see whether that planet is in the rising sign.
- Note its dignity, whether it is combust, and the second house it rules.
- Look at what else is in the 1st, then open the yoga calculator to see whether the engine flags a Kendra-Kona or Parivartana link.
None of these steps produces a verdict on fortune. They show which classical rule applies and how strong BPHS would consider the planet that carries it.
Questions about the 9th lord in the 1st
- What does BPHS say about the 9th lord in the 1st house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 97: the native will be fortunate, honoured by the king, virtuous, charming, learned and honoured by the public. Sl. 145-148 scale this by the planet's strength and combine it with any second house the planet rules.
- Is the 9th lord in the 1st a Raj Yoga?
- BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 say a Kon lord in a Kendra causes a yoga, and the 1st is a Kendra. This app's detector is stricter: it flags a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga only when a Kendra lord and a Kona lord are joined or in mutual aspect. See what a yoga in your chart means.
- Which planet is my 9th lord?
- The planet ruling the ninth sign from your Ascendant. The table lists it for all twelve; the Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
- What if the 9th lord is debilitated in the 1st?
- That happens for Virgo rising (Venus in Virgo) and Scorpio rising (the Moon in Scorpio). Sl. 145-148 say a weak planet gives about a quarter of the verse's results. BPHS has separate rules for cancellation of debilitation that this page does not cover.
- How common is this placement?
- In the engine's sample it occurred in 222 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.4%. That describes moments in time, not people.
