In short
The 1st lord in the 10th house puts the ruler of the rising sign at the top of the chart, in the angle of work, authority, honour and the father. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 10 reads it as paternal happiness, royal honour, fame and, in its own word, "doubtlessly" self-earned wealth. Its strength runs from exalted (Mars for Aries rising, Saturn for Capricorn) to debilitated (Mercury for Gemini).
What the placement means
The 1st house lord is the planet ruling the rising sign. In the 10th house it stands in the sign at the top of the chart, the house of profession, authority, honour and public standing, which BPHS also reads for the father.
Both the 1st and the 10th are Kendras, and the 10th is the angle classical texts weight most heavily for action in the world. The placement links the person directly to their work and reputation, and BPHS reads it in those terms.
The two houses involved
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body and character (BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2).
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is, in Ch. 11 Sl. 11, the house of royalty or authority, place, livelihood, honour, the father, living abroad and debts. Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 also singles out a planet "in Karm Bhava" as one of the signs of a house's well-being. The house page covers the rest.
What BPHS says about the Lagna lord in the 10th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 10 says that with the Lagna lord in the 10th the native "will be endowed with paternal happiness, royal honour, fame among men" and will "doubtlessly" have self-earned wealth. bphs-alt.txt has the same words. The emphatic "doubtlessly" is unusual in the chapter, which elsewhere states its results plainly.
Every clause draws on the 10th's list in Ch. 11: the father, royalty, honour and livelihood. "Self-earned" is the interesting word. It ties the wealth to the native's own work, which is what the Lagna lord in the house of action would suggest, rather than to inheritance or gift. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 still applies: the verse comes through in full, half or quarter according to the planet's strength.
Three further passages name this placement as a condition. Ch. 21 Sl. 19-21 gives fame when the 10th lord is in the 9th, the Lagna lord in the 10th and the Moon in the 5th. Ch. 40 Sl. 13 says an exchange of signs between the 10th lord and the Lagna lord makes the native "associated with the king in a great manner"; the engine flags that exchange as Parivartana Yoga. Ch. 36 Sl. 13-14 gives a second form of Shankh Yoga when the Lagna lord and the 10th lord are together in a movable sign while the 9th lord is strong.
Chamar Yoga (Ch. 36 Sl. 11-12) needs an exalted Lagna lord in an angle aspected by Jupiter. Through this placement it is possible only for Aries and Capricorn rising, where the Lagna lord is exalted in the 10th. The engine's yoga calculator lists the yogas it tests. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic, with its sign-only dignity for the planet in the 10th sign:
| Ascendant | 1st lord | Other house it rules | 10th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | 8th (Scorpio) | Capricorn | Exalted |
| Taurus | Venus | 6th (Libra) | Aquarius | Friendly sign |
| Gemini | Mercury | 4th (Virgo) | Pisces | Debilitated |
| Cancer | Moon | none | Aries | Neutral |
| Leo | Sun | none | Taurus | Enemy sign |
| Virgo | Mercury | 10th (Gemini) | Gemini | Own sign |
| Libra | Venus | 8th (Taurus) | Cancer | Enemy sign |
| Scorpio | Mars | 6th (Aries) | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 4th (Pisces) | Virgo | Enemy sign |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 2nd (Aquarius) | Libra | Exalted |
| Aquarius | Saturn | 12th (Capricorn) | Scorpio | Enemy sign |
| Pisces | Jupiter | 10th (Sagittarius) | Sagittarius | Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
Four Ascendants give the Lagna lord great strength here. For Aries rising Mars is exalted in Capricorn; for Capricorn rising Saturn is exalted in Libra. For Virgo and Pisces rising the Lagna lord also owns the 10th, so Mercury sits in Gemini and Jupiter in Sagittarius, own sign or moolatrikona. Gemini rising is the one debilitation, Mercury in Pisces. Four more (Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) put the lord in an enemy's sign, which is a wider spread than the verse's confident tone suggests.
Strength changes the reading
For Virgo and Pisces rising the two lordships coincide: the Lagna lord is also the 10th lord in its own house. That satisfies Sl. 10 and the general rule that a house prospers when its lord occupies it. For Aries and Capricorn rising the Lagna lord is exalted in an angle, the first condition of Chamar Yoga. For the four enemy-sign Ascendants, Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 counts an enemy's sign among the conditions that weaken the Lagna lord, so Sl. 145-148 would expect a reduced share of the verse.
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 adds a note on the planet's nature: benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects, and malefics owning them do not remain malefic. It is a rule about ownership, and the Lagna lord is exempted by the same passage, but it matters for the 10th lord, which the Ch. 21 and Ch. 40 combinations bring in. See dignity for how the engine ranks the labels.
The second lordship matters for the rest. For Aries rising, exalted Mars also owns the 8th; for Capricorn rising, exalted Saturn also owns the 2nd. For Taurus and Scorpio rising the planet brings the 6th into the 10th, for Libra the 8th, for Aquarius the 12th, and for Gemini and Sagittarius the 4th, which puts two angle lordships into a third angle. Cancer and Leo rising bring only the Lagna lordship. Sl. 145-148 reads both houses together and lets contrary indications cancel, so an exalted Lagna lord that also owns a dusthana is not the same case as an exalted Lagna lord that owns nothing else.
Two mechanical facts apply to every row. From the 10th the Lagna lord aspects the 4th by the seventh-house aspect, so the planet looks at the house of home while standing in the house of work. And the engine reports two conditions for every planet that Ch. 24 does not mention for this placement: combustion, which Ch. 12 counts as weakening the Lagna lord, and retrogression, on which Ch. 24 is silent. The worked example below has a retrograde Lagna lord, and this page does not assign that a meaning the text does not give it.
Worked example: Aquarius rising, Saturn retrograde in Scorpio
The engine's deterministic search returned: 24 March 1985, 05:33 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Aquarius 21.28. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Aquarius rising makes Saturn the 1st lord; it also owns Capricorn, the 12th.
- Saturn is in Scorpio at 4.24 degrees, Anuradha pada 1, in the 10th house. It is retrograde and not combust, and the engine gives "Enemy sign".
- The 10th lord is Mars, owner of Scorpio. Mars is in its own sign, Aries, in the 3rd, and from there aspects the 10th by its 8th-house special aspect under the engine's rule. The Moon is also in Aries.
- Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn, the 12th.
This is one of the four enemy-sign cases, so Ch. 12 and Sl. 145-148 together would expect a reduced share of Sl. 10. The 10th lord is strong (own sign) and aspects its own house, which Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 counts in a house's favour. The named combinations do not form: there is no exchange (Mars is not in the 1st), Mars is in the 3rd rather than the 9th for the Ch. 21 fame rule, and Saturn is not exalted for Chamar Yoga. Scorpio is a fixed sign, so the movable-sign form of Shankh Yoga does not apply either.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 1st lord in the 10th house in 258, or 8.6%. That is a property of the sampled moments, not of people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 10th lord in the 1st house. One sign either side are the 1st lord in the 9th and the 1st lord in the 11th; the other angles are the 4th and the 7th. The Dashamsa (D10) is the division BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns to "power (and position)"; this app computes it in the Dashamsa calculator. For the worked example's planet see Saturn in the 10th house.
Questions about the 1st lord in the 10th house
- What does BPHS say about the 1st lord in the 10th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 10: paternal happiness, royal honour, fame, and "doubtlessly" self-earned wealth. The chapter's closing verses still scale this by the planet's strength.
- Does it mean a successful career?
- The verse speaks of honour and self-earned wealth. This app treats that as the text's rule about a position, not as a forecast of anyone's career.
- What happens if the 10th lord is in the 1st at the same time?
- The two lords have exchanged signs. BPHS Ch. 40 Sl. 13 reads that as close association with the king, and the engine flags it as Parivartana Yoga.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest version?
- Aries and Capricorn rising (exalted Mars, exalted Saturn), and Virgo and Pisces rising, where the Lagna lord also owns the 10th.
- How common is it?
- 258 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.6%) in the engine's sample.
