In short
The 10th lord in the 1st house is the ruler of work, rank and public action placed in the Ascendant. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 109 reads it as a scholarly, famous person and a poet, troubled in boyhood and happy later, whose wealth grows day by day. For Virgo and Pisces rising the Lagna lord and the 10th lord are the same planet, which is then in its own sign here.
What the placement means
"The 10th lord in the 1st house" is the house lord of work, profession, authority and public deeds standing in the Ascendant, the house of the self. The lord brings the 10th house's affairs to the person directly.
Both houses are Kendras, angles of the chart, and the 1st is also a trine. Counted from the 10th, the 1st is the 4th: the lord of action sits in the angle that is "home" relative to its own house. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant here (whole-sign houses), so the placement is known only with a birth time; see when the birth time is unknown.
The two houses involved
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is read for work, status, the father in some readings, and deeds in the world.
The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) is the body, temperament and the self, and the point from which every house is counted.
What BPHS says about the 10th lord in the 1st
Ch. 24 Sl. 109 opens the 10th lord's set: if the lord of Karm is in the Tanu Bhava, the native "will be scholarly, famous, be a poet", will incur diseases in boyhood and be happy later on, and his wealth "will increase day by day". The bphs-alt text reads the same. The verse has a time shape that most of the chapter lacks: difficulty early, improvement later, and wealth that accumulates. The health clause is the text's classical statement, reported here, and not medical advice.
The qualities it names, learning, fame and poetry, are those of a person whose work is visible as themselves: the house of deeds carried into the house of the self. The chapter's closing verses, Sl. 145-148, then scale the whole reading by the planet's strength (full, half or a quarter) and require both lordships to be read for a planet owning two houses.
Kendra lordship and the exchange rule
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add a rule that matters for the 10th lord in particular: benefics that own Kendras do not give benefic effects, and malefics that own Kendras do not remain inauspicious. A Jupiter or Mercury ruling the 10th is therefore read with some reserve, while a Saturn or Mars ruling it loses some of its malefic edge. For the 10th lord in the 1st that means the nature of the planet changes how BPHS expects Sl. 109 to come through.
Ch. 40 Sl. 13, among the yogas for royal association, says that an exchange of signs between the 10th lord and the Lagna lord makes the native "associated with the king in a great manner". That exchange is this placement and its reverse happening together; the engine reports it as a Parivartana Yoga without naming the Ch. 40 reading. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 10th lord in the 1st.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's table for all twelve rising signs. Because the 1st house is the rising sign, the third column repeats the Ascendant. Dignity is the engine's sign-level result from natural relationships only (a real chart can move the tier one step).
| Ascendant | 10th lord | 1st house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Saturn | Aries | Debilitated | 11th |
| Taurus | Saturn | Taurus | Friendly sign | 9th |
| Gemini | Jupiter | Gemini | Enemy sign | 7th |
| Cancer | Mars | Cancer | Debilitated | 5th |
| Leo | Venus | Leo | Enemy sign | 3rd |
| Virgo | Mercury | Virgo | Exalted, moolatrikona or own sign by degree | 1st |
| Libra | Moon | Libra | Neutral | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Scorpio | Sun | Scorpio | Friendly sign | None (a luminary rules one sign) |
| Sagittarius | Mercury | Sagittarius | Neutral | 7th |
| Capricorn | Venus | Capricorn | Friendly sign | 5th |
| Aquarius | Mars | Aquarius | Neutral | 3rd |
| Pisces | Jupiter | Pisces | Own sign | 1st |
Virgo and Pisces rising are the rows where one planet rules both the 1st and the 10th: Mercury and Jupiter, standing in their own signs (Mercury in Virgo also exalted or moolatrikona by degree). Two rows are debilitated: Saturn in Aries for Aries rising, where Saturn also owns the 11th, and Mars in Cancer for Cancer rising, where Mars is the yogakaraka owning the 5th and 10th. Gemini (Jupiter) and Leo (Venus) put the 10th lord in an enemy sign. For Libra and Scorpio rising the 10th lord is a luminary, the Moon or the Sun, with no other house.
Strength changes the reading
The planet's dignity is the first scale under Sl. 145-148. The rows above are unusually extreme: own sign, exaltation and debilitation all occur, so the same verse runs from its full to its quarter strength across the twelve Ascendants. Combustion and company come next, and in the 1st, planets sharing the house colour the person as directly as the 10th lord does.
The second lordship decides more than usual. Saturn for Aries rising brings the 11th, one of the lordships Ch. 34 calls evil; Venus for Leo rising brings the 3rd; Jupiter for Gemini rising brings the 7th, a second Kendra, which Ch. 34 treats with caution for a benefic. Mars for Cancer rising brings the 5th, a trine, the yogakaraka case of Ch. 34 Sl. 13, and is the clearest example of a strong lordship in a weak sign.
How it sits beside the neighbouring placements
The reverse, the Lagna lord in the 10th (Sl. 10), reads as paternal happiness, royal honour, fame and self-earned wealth. Together they are the exchange Ch. 40 Sl. 13 names. One house on, the 10th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 110) turns toward wealth and the father; one house back, the 10th lord in the 12th (Sl. 120) speaks of expenditure and worry. Sl. 109 is the 10th lord's verse about the person.
Worked example: Scorpio rising, the Sun in the Lagna
The engine's deterministic search found: 4 December 1985, 06:49 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Scorpio 15.23. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- With Scorpio rising the 10th house is Leo, so the 10th lord is the Sun, which rules no other sign.
- The Sun is in Scorpio at 18.18 degrees, Jyeshtha pada 1, in the 1st house, "Friendly sign" (Mars, lord of Scorpio, is a natural friend of the Sun).
- The 1st is crowded: Mercury (6.91, retrograde, combust), Venus (7.0) and Saturn (8.35, combust) are there too.
- The Lagna lord Mars is in Virgo at 29.71 in the 11th; Mercury is in Scorpio. The two have exchanged signs, and the engine reports a Parivarthana Yoga between them.
On Sl. 145-148's scale a friendly-sign, single-lordship Sun is a good middle case for Sl. 109. The company is the complication: three planets with their own lordships share the Lagna, two of them combust by the Sun's nearness. The Moon, the 9th lord, is in Leo in the 10th, so the house the Sun rules holds the lord of fortune. That is not an exchange (the Sun is not in Cancer), and the engine reports no Kendra-Kona link between the Sun and the Moon here, because neither sits with or aspects the other.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 10th lord in the 1st house in 245, or 8.2%. That is a count of sampled moments, not people.

Questions about the 10th lord in the 1st
- What does BPHS say about the 10th lord in the 1st house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 109: scholarly, famous, a poet, troubled in boyhood and happy later, with wealth growing day by day. Sl. 145-148 scale this by the planet's strength.
- Does it mean self-employment or a public career?
- The verse speaks of learning, fame and wealth, not of a kind of employment. This app does not turn a placement into a career prediction.
- What if the Lagna lord and 10th lord exchange signs?
- BPHS Ch. 40 Sl. 13 reads that exchange as close association with the king. The engine flags any sign exchange as a Parivarthana Yoga.
- For which Ascendants is the 10th lord strongest in the 1st?
- By sign, Virgo (Mercury in Virgo) and Pisces (Jupiter in Pisces), where one planet rules both houses. Aries (Saturn) and Cancer (Mars) put it debilitated.
- What does "diseases in boyhood" mean here?
- It is the verse's own clause, reported as the text's classical claim. It is not medical advice and this app does not predict illness from a placement.
- Is a benefic 10th lord better in the 1st than a malefic one?
- Not simply. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects and malefics owning them do not stay inauspicious, so Jupiter or Mercury as 10th lord is read with reserve, and Saturn or Mars with some relief. Dignity and the second lordship still matter more.
- How common is it?
- It occurred in 245 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.2%.
